How to Maintain an Awesome Paludarium

- I had to do maintenance on this setup and I knew a lot of you wanted to see that process, so I filmed it. Most of you also wanted to see a dedicated video on it. I didn't intent to do one, but once I got started I realized there was a lot I wanted to discuss.
Since I uploaded the video on this paludarium about three months back, I have consistently received questions about how I maintain it and how to maintain other paludariums. Truth is that they're usually pretty simple, but as I eluded to in the video, every setup is slightly different. You won't completely know what to do until you work with one first hand. What I'm trying to say is that just because you see something work for someone else doesn't mean that it will work for you. Even minor differences can changes everything. That said, videos like this can give you a good idea of where to begin and a lot of resources for your tool box.
Now I don't say any of that to discourage you from starting. In fact I encourage you if this is something you want to do. My main thing is that you will learn much better by doing research and through trial and error than copying what others do, expecting success.
Anyways, this paludarium is doing great! I'm really enjoying it and can't wait to see it continue to flourish. Something I didn't mention in the video is that I bought a variety of other botanicals that I will be adding to the water feature that I know you're going to love! So stay tuned for that. As for plants I don't know when I'll add more.
More on this one in the future, but I've talked enough. Enjoy the video and let me know what you think down in the comment!

Sorry an hour late on this one, but it's up now! Sometimes it takes me longer to get the thumbnail and description put together. Anyways for those of you have been asking, hopefully this is exactly what you were looking for. It's not hard to maintain this stuff, just be patient!
As always thanks for watching and I'll see you down in the comments! 👇
Thank you for the video. I really appreciate you and your channel. My mom actually came over to my place a couple of months ago and saw one of your videos, she was fascinated. She has sense started her own terrarium. It's the first thing I've seen her passionate about in a long time :)
She's on disability and doesn't get out of the house much, now she's going to yard sales, flea markets, the forest, all due to her new hobby. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

Great to see mushrooms growing!!
Do a feeding of all your animals
That's incredible! All the best to you and your mom.
If you fixed a camera on this paludarium, I could watch it all day. Seeing the snails creep over the botanicals, the little fish and the toads moving, watching the waterfall are all very relaxing. I think you should make a long video like that with no talking, just music and different camera setups. It would be so ambient!
I agree. I have some stuff like that planned, so stay tuned!
@@SerpaDesign i don't know if it would be possible but a no-music version would be really nice too.
Honestly I wouldn't even want music, just the ASMR sounds of the water feature would be so calming
@@SerpaDesign nice!
That is true. A living tableau of life. Rainforest music or noises as a backdrop. Perfect!
That is awesome. From the zoomed in images, I can't tell that it's in a house. It looks just like a jungle shot. Those little frogs are living in luxury.
Videos like this usually inspire me to clean/maintain a tank or enclosure.
Lol! Get cleaning!
The immense love you have for these beautiful critters is very contagious.
Ok! So I don't know if you've seen my comments, but I'm a pretty new subscriber. I have had a palidarium running since 2006/7. It houses a whites tree frog and four fire belly toads that are a bit older than the set up.
I wanted to remodel the set up to be more natural and followed this palidarium video (well your building of it video). OMG!!! I started the build a while back, but just got the guys back in. A week later they laid eggs! They haven't laid eggs in a very long time. I think they are very very happy with their new home.
Thank you for your awesome content!
Keep it up.
My herps are grateful!
Out of all the you tubers i watched today you are the most learner friendly website. Thank you.
Very beautiful setup. I would love to have something like this in my home one day. Looks like it would be a relaxing hobby.
You know your stuff. I respect that you take the time and energy to care for your setups and animals! Unlike some people. 👍
I've got an old 75 gal aquarium and I want to do this. Your videos are truly great, informative and fun to watch. Can't thank you enough. Wish we had CZcams when I was younger. Man the things I could've done!
Thanks for the update. Addition of fish really made this set-up above the bar!!!
I agree. I could not go back now. They really add a ton of life!
OMG - I just LOVE this Paludarium!!!
“Carefully placed back”
Bombs water with botanicals
😂😂
Haha! That's just how it looks sped up.
Within the first minute of that little montage of footage, its awesome to see how everything is working together in there! Looks incredible, as always. Makes me excited to eventually be able to make my own paludarium.
The tank, the editing, the voice over, the animals. simply a masterpiece, job well done sir
So glad I found your channel. You’ve inspired me to try and build a bio active set up for my crested gecko. I find your videos very informative and you present the information in a way that’s easy to comprehend. Keep up the good work! I look forward to watching more in the future!
Hey *Tanner !!
My 6 year old daughter Marli and I love your videos, we watch them almost everyday and learn so much !!
Marli has a comment she would like to leave you,
"Hellllllooo! Please can you make a fish tank that looks like the ocean! Everything you make is cool and I like your fish"
The true King of DIY
Haha idk about that! Fun fact, Joey inspired me to take CZcams seriously.
@@SerpaDesign For sure, Joey is a good guy but you're taking the Hobby to the next DIY level. Anyone can achieve your results with patience, research and method without having to spend hundreds on aquarium systems. We appreciate that.
I really love this setup. It makes me want one in my fishroom! Great job Tanner!
Thanks Rachel I'm glad you enjoy it! Paludariums are the ultimate combination my favorite hobbies.
Just wanted to say, you're videos inspired me to give terrarium building a try. My first vivarium is currently growing. Keep up the great work.
In a separate series, could you look at mushrooms. Like a mixed variety of cool mushrooms. Ones that last long or are good for terreirums. Or a dedicated mushroom tererium. Would love to setup something like that but have no idea if its possible : )
Check out kinocorium on instagram! Mushroom terrariums are totally a thing!
@@madiis18account Nice thanks!! Your right, it is possible. Really cool stuff on their page. Ok Me @serpadesigns let's get some vids on this stuff 😁😁😁
Mushrooms ocassinally grow in terrariums but they're never there for long. But there are some plants that lack clhorophyll that look just like fungus
You always make me so inspired, yet I’ve been struggling with my aquarium. You have been so informative for all my home projects!
I love how you take your time on those beautiful terrariums.
"carefully placed"
*yeets them into the water*
I love the setup by the way
I just randomly found your channel and ive just been loving it ever since, keep up the good work!!
This one really is visually stunning, seeing it through all the stages of construction was most informative. Those toads are giving a lot of personality...it is so sweet the way they watch every move. Thanks for the update, and the tips.🖤🇨🇦
tanner : this is a great video with a total grasp on making and maintenance of the paludarium. come full circle it is just awesome and the fish and snails make it even more natural. thanks for the view. carmine p.
Absolutely beautiful!! A tiny little paradise... ❤
So cool! Really natural looking too.
You have quickly become one of my favorite content creators here! Thank you for all the rad videos
thanks to all of your AMAZING videos, i successfully set up a paludarium for dumpy frogs. it looks amazing and i am confident in its success!
Excellent! This is one of my favorites of your builds!
Gotta say I think this might be my favorite set up atm. Amazing art and creativity.
This is so gorgeous and therapeutic. It is such a lovely mini jungle!
You're really making progress with every aspect of your videos 💪🏻
Keep up the good work!
one of my most favorite of your projects!
Awesome vid man. I always learn something new when I watch your stuff
nice setup, it's going wonderful
Beautiful tank! Great video...I look forward to the next one!
Thank you for sharing this information. I am thinking about starting my first Paludarium and your videos have helped me greatly.
Thanks for another great video!!
The tank look awesome as always
You are very detailed, and I have my Terrarium bought and will be using some of your great ideas. Thanks for taking the time, great videos :-).
Amazing! So cool that mushrooms are popping up! Thanks for sharing and for everything you do!!
Yeah they are awesome! It happens a lot, but they don't last long, so it's hard to get on film.
Probably my favorite build keep up the awesome content!!!!
Thanks for the video Tanner!
You inspired me to make my first bottle terraria. I made some in bottles and one in a test tube! Love your vids!
hey this was really fascinating. i got your klein bottle build in my recommended, but this and the corresponding build video interested me so much more. i love seeing different crafts, but this isnt what i normally watch. (usually wood and metal working projects) However, the passion people show for putting time and effort into making something really shows no matter what is being built. its interesting how one can make a nearly isolated ecosystem inside such a small space. im gonna leave a sub and looking forward to more from you.
That's a thing of beauty.... Well done.
Love your videos my dude.
The thing I like about you is that u dont care if u can't see your pets. Your fine only if there living the best lives.
I need to start adding leaf litter to my setups , that looks awesome
Beautiful
Dope! Thanks for the knowledge T.
Thank you for another great video.
Perfection!! Great work man!!
Wow. It’s so magical. One day I’ll be able to make one of those!
Could you please write a book? Sett-up maintenance, open closed terrariums.... I would be definitely in line to get a copy!!!!
Haha maybe some day!
very comprehensive.. thank you!
You should make a herb terrarium
Most herbs don't like such high humidity!
Your paludarium locks great 👍 all the result of time and work
❤️ the video and this setup! Would like to look at this type of setup for our rogue 11 year old who prefers frogs to any kind of fish! 😃
Ahh! Wonderful as always. Your channel is seriously like the best ASMR channel on yt. Plants, pets and such a soothing but in no way sedating voice.
Thank you :)
Unintentional ASMR lol! It's just my "slow talker" voice.
I found your channel a few months back and always have had a fond love for plants. I was kind of apprehensive of trying a vivarium or paludarium but you have inspired me to give it a go, so much so I have plans for a couple of tanks i have around.. 55 gal and a 75 gal, one will be a vivarium the bigger one a paludarium. I was wandering what kind of snails you have in the paludarium? Love your videos and look forward to seeing the next project.
That's awesome! The ones in the clips were blue ramshorn snails.
I love this setup!
As always great video.
👍Super vidéo and subject. It gives me l 'envy to get one so much
I love this tank!!
Great video!
Beautiful!
Its beautiful!
So inspiring!
Thank you for the video:)
Wow I'm so surprised you don't have a million subscribers! You've got such amazing and great quality contents. I respect all the hard work you put into your videos🙇♀️
PS would love to see more of your animals!
Thank you! Maybe some day I'll have that many. I do have some videos lined up for my animals so stay tuned.
It looks so good. 😍 Some day my animal room will look as amazing as yours. lol
The rouge zebra danio, its the opposite in my tank I have the one rouge white cloud. For plants, I would try Salvinia Minima, Water Lettuce, and definitely more Anubias oh I just love the look of anubias. Keep up the great work, would love to see some livebearers in you scapes to come, maybe a fish-in paludarium terrarium.
Haha! Water lettuce is too large. I think it will ruin the sense of scale. Salvinia is closer to what I was thinking. Also can never have too much anubias.
@@SerpaDesign Yeah I thought size would probably be an issue, I think red root floater would look cool I've never had the chance to play with it myself.
Watch out with salvinnia, when I had a ton of it it eventually got infested with salvinnia flies. I would recommend frogbit instead
frog on bike as long as it is pretty inclosed they shouldn't be a problem, but Frogbit would look nice aswell
Hey! Just subscribed to your channel a few days ago and it's great! thanks for all the good work! I got a question though: could you make a video about the gears you're using? Tweezers and such but moreoever the thing you use to spray the plants and stuff like that.
Thanks! Maybe I can make a video on that some day, but I did leave links in the description for the utensils I'm using here.
@@SerpaDesign didnt see that, the ustensil I was wondering about the most is the little "water spray" you're using on some video, it seems perfect to water the plants without having the water go straight to them and harm them (or move the soil)
I have mixed feelings about *personally* keeping animals in small enclosures, but yours are generally pretty great--they look interesting places to live. I'm curious how many scenery changes the toads have had? I'd never thought of making planted containers with isopods and wee fauna, like that before. Definitely going to make a native terrarium in the spring.
Always enjoy the vids. Be well.
Nice vid mate
Really cool set up. What do you use plz to support your plants etc onto ?
Serpa is really creative
That was excellent thank you. I enjoy botanicals more than fish I think. I have a 33L fairly vertical tank. I have toyed with idea of diverting the water from the external filter and instead flowing it through a bed of plants growing in perlite or similar. A small jungle would be on top of or hanging on the back. Ever heard of that being done?
so awesome! :)
Super awesome!!! I’ve wanted to do a rock slate waterfall like that in a viv I’ve been planning. I’d love to get my hands on slate like that! Where did you find yours?
Happy Paludarium = Happy Toads.
Super nice.
Where do you find your plants?
Wow😲😲😲beautiful 😘❤👊🙋
It would be cool to see a microgreen terrarium, one with various types of edible culinary plants. You should be the one to utilize the idea, no one else currently has one documented on CZcams.
💙💚💛looking sharp here 👌
This is my favorite.
Fantastic video, thank you! I particularly liked the snippets showing the underlying construction of this set up. Do you have anything else on how this or any of your other designs were done? 👍🏼
Yes of course, all of my builds have a dedicated build video. Here you are, enjoy: czcams.com/video/PVRlXXhdD7U/video.html
Thanks, mate, that’s awesome! I’m new to your channel and haven’t gone through everything yet. I’ll watch with great interest!
How do you stop condensation? I have one setup for mudskippers and inside glass always has condensation on it. Have to open lid for awhile for it to clear up thanks looks good
Awesome work! How do you keep the glass so clean and avoid calcium build up at the water line?
Hi there, love the videos, just started building my own 54 gal paludarium based on this video. I have a waterfall powered by a micro pump to circulate the water and was wondering is the pump moving water adequate to keep the water clear or is a filter necessary.
Have you ever tried growing fungi in a paludarium setup? I think a variety of colorful mushrooms popping up interspersed with the plants would look beautiful, and of course help with the bioactive side of things
I love this setup so much! Will you add shrimp?
Yeah I probably will add amanos.
Add some neocaridina shrimp to further the biotope aspect
Just a random question, why do you zip tie the false bottom instead of glue it? Do the zip ties make it easier to put in or something? Just curious!
Ps. I just started watching your videos and I love them :)
Easier, quicker and cheaper than using glue. Plus it allows room for error if you don't size it correctly. Welcome to the channel! 🌿
It is beaufiul
YAY MORE PALUDARIUMS
