  • The American Bullfrog Paludarium is finally complete! I've been talking about this setup for awhile now and it took a few months to complete, but the wait was totally worth it. It could have been completed much sooner, but it took me a while to get all of the perfect materials. It was worth the wait though! Spending a little extra time to do things right the first time is always worth it.
Like I said in the video, my goal was to loosely mimic the look of a pond's shore and I think I did that well. Obviously there's no soil, but the idea is for MJ to constantly look toward the water because he feels secure from behind. In the wild, this is exactly what pond frogs do, so shouldn't they do that in captivity as well. Take a look next time you're out frogging and you'll see what I'm saying.
Most of you know that I used to keep MJ in bare bottom tanks for sanitary reasons, but this looks a million times better! There's no comparison at all. Due to the size of this tank, the filtration and the plants, I don't think I will have any issues keeping this tank clean. I will also add a clean up crew shortly.
Also the water is not at all dirty. There are just tannins from the driftwood and some cloudiness from the Flourite. That should all clear up over time through water changes.
Anyways, that's about everything additional that I wanted to add. Enjoy the build and if you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! My daughter found 2 bullfrog tadpole and we have been raising them every since. We love watching them grow it IS very rewarding. However with your educated disclaimer of 16yrs of keeping a clean tank for a finicky eater we appreciate your advise not to keep for a lifetime. We will chalk this up to experience and education and move on with catch and release! Thank you so much for the video and guidance. It's one of the best so far.

He is so cute. I would love to raise one from a tadpole but I never see the giant bullfrog tadpoles anymore. They were in every shop years ago for a couple bucks. As soon as I saw you pouring the fluorite straight from the bag I was like .....no he's not... xD it's my favorite substrate. It looks so beautiful and natural underwater. But honestly I don't believe it ever becomes dust free, because whenever it rubs against itself, it just creates more clay sediment. Such a delicate, beautiful substrate that roots seem to love but not the best for sifters and destroyers :P awesome video as always!

Fluorite is the WORST! Rinsing it would have only helped minimally, fyi. Lol, I rinsed mine six times and the tank I set up with it still has periodic cloudiness issues if I disturb the cap. It’s clay-based, so that sediment will settle, but it’s messy stuff. Love the plant growth though, so you can’t go wrong, but yeah, the cloudiness was not your fault!

I have this in my freshwater planted 20gal and man, every time I go to to maintenance on the plants or add/change something out the water always gets cloudy. All my root plants really seem to like it though so i guess its worth it. I also dont have a cap on part of it too which is probably contributing to the issue, but I like the natural looks that it gives.

I got an American bullfrog through working at a pet store, he came in as a new froglet in with our feeder goldfish shipment. It was super cold outside, and I didn't think he would survive being released. I have spent months setting up a tank similar to this video. (eventually I will make him a 75 gallon enclosure, he is just not very big at the moment and I can't afford the bigger setup just yet) I am finally ready with good water quality and temps, and I am super excited to put the little man (Jet) into his new home. Good video. Thanks for all your efforts. I am the type of hobbyist who will buy come aquatic creatures from my fish store for my outside tanks knowing some might not survive the winter. I have about a half dozen species of fish who do survive in my 100 gallon tank year round. I rehome creatures who I begin to worry about. 4 bullfrog tadpoles joined us this summer. Today I retrieved one from the swimming pool and moved all four to a small tank in the outside orchid room. They are still young and I think I've met immediate needs. Watching your video I realize there are decisions to be made and maybe a much bigger tank!

Beautiful setup! For people who'd like something similar but a bit easier to manage (at least in terms of size) I'd suggest Leopard Frogs. You can find the tadpoles at bait shops pretty frequently. They morph large enough to eat small crickets right away, and as adults get about 3" nose to rump.
