    "The bean counters told me we literally could not afford to buy seven dollars worth of moon rocks, much less a thousand. Bought 'em anyway. Ground 'em up, mixed em into a filament.
    And guess what? Ground up moon rocks are pure poison. I am deathly ill." - Cave Johnson

      Still, it turns out they're a great portal conductor. So *now* , we're gonna see if jumping in and out of these new portals can somehow leech the lunar poison out of a man's bloodstream. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. [[coughs]]

    Apparently (from what I was told after inquiring in the comments on a recent Slant3D video), your favorite open source slicer is getting texture maps soon in addition to the simple Gaussian noise fuzzy skin feature, and hopefully we'll also get some ability to select the surfaces to texture.

    Kudos on the API. I'm a developer interested in building for some e-comm platforms but I have requests/questions as I spec it all out:
    1) Sandbox mode: Test without submitting real jobs
    2) Order abort call: The ability to cancel an order within a certain period of time (in lieu of sandbox?)
    3) Webhooks: For order progression, shipping status updates (low priority..)
    4) Full specs of slicing details: 20% infill mentioned. Infill geometry? Walls/floors/etc. Is this published somewhere?
    5) Improved docs and channel for devs to request clarifications. e.g. required order fields, error responses.
    6) The orig video mentioned limited API keys. What is the ramp-up schedule? Need to know if it's worth the dev effort if customers can't get keys.

    Didn't even have to watch the rest of the video. I saw "We released an API" in the video description, clicked on the video, skipped forward to the API part, listened to your whole spiel and immediately signed up. Your API will be hearing from me. A lot.

    That API sounds great. I love the focus you got on vision. This is probably going somewhere. Congrats. Unfortunately for me, my slicing process is way to advanced for this to work for most of my work. Also, a lot of what printing should be used for, is not supported, but that is besides the point. This is the right way for you guys to go. You seem to use gateways to connect to existing infrastructure, and you seem to play on the installed base. And again, I love that you have a clear vision doing this. This is just what the industry needs. Thanks.

    Check out the BASF Ultrafuse 316L filament. Can be FDM printed then sintered and is weldable stainless. Only about half as expensive as the moon dust filament and much more practical.

In your next video can you talk about what your plans for this new filament machine going in? Id love to see some other types of filaments on your product line 😊 Id love to get a tour where the magic happens!

    Slant3D API V2 sounds great as the initial solution to cover a viable chunk of the market. Best wishes for mega success. I look forward to V3 with more colors and maybe more materials such as PETG for structural parts that need additional resistance to weathering and some solvents, but it definitely makes sense to start with the 80% solution - PLA in limited colors, 0.2 mm resolution, 20% infill.

    Congratulations to Slant 3D software team for releasing a public 3d-Print API including 3d-model slicing and Etsy print on demand services. A tremendous achievements. (20:40)
    The "Formlabs Texture Engine" topic (6:54) begs the question of why can't designers include multiple surface textures as part of a CAD design?
    .STLs, the traditional file format commonly used by 3d-printers only contains surface geometry, which would require very high resolution mesh to integrate a texture, and irreversibly altering the surface of a CAD model.
    An increasing common alternative, .3MF includes color and other designer defined CAD model properties. If textures where applied as if a color, then all that is needed is a mapping between color and texture to apply a designer defined texture to a bounded region of a models surface.
    eg: red = sandpaper texture, white = hexagonal diamond texture, etc.
    The slicer software could link and apply the 3d surface -emboss of the texture(s) to the appropriate surface surface area. This would make it a trivial task for designer to edit and modify the surface skin of a model enabling experimentation, or custom variations using any generic CAD program that supports the .3MF file formate (or a better reviewed open-source file format).
    Simple geometries of a 3d print design would remain simple and lower-res, but have a high resolution texture applied to the printed surface. This would be revolutionary, and an industry leading feature.
    FYI: computer games use a similar technique to apply complex textures (color, and depth-map skins) to low-resolution geometry in game models.

    I have an issue that I am dealing with that you have not really covered in your videos (I don't think). I have a design that calls for a collection of flat squares with overlapping connector tabs. I can print them flat with no problem but I don't see how to print them ant any other angle than 90 degrees to the bed. That would be a problem because the part is only a couple mm thick and has no raised edges. If I can print them vertically, I can get the volume that I need from a single print run but I just do no see how to do that. I have successfully used the 45 degree alignment with a triangular support on a couple models but this one has me stumped. The part is approximately 104mm x 120mm x 5mm. Do you have a video related to something like this?

  • @RJin3D
    @RJin3D Před 2 měsíci

    When you say multi color options you mean different color options for the whole print right? Like the whole print in red or the whole print in black. Not red and black in the same print, right?

    17:00 - I very much appreciate the goal of making good filament cost effectively in the US. It's mostly not a patriotic thing for me. It's an engineering thing. There shouldn't be so many costs to US manufacturing that it's cheaper to import a commodity like plastic filament from China. We need lower taxes and regulatory burden in the US to be more competitive, and then better automation should be enough to make US manufacturing competitive again.

      @@yellowajah - I gladly kicked in some money for the Slant3D test equipment because they will be testing a broad range of filament (far more than they use) and publishing the data online. That will help me in a few ways. I'll have a better idea which filament is objectively better (far better than Amazon reviews) to help save me a lot of time and effort when selecting and qualifying materials, and they'll test periodically to ensure quality remains consistent to keep manufacturers honest.

    Consider showing respect to paying sponsors by taking more effort. Not just by reading off the screen. Who would ever want to sponsor you like that?

    • @j.f.christ8421
      @j.f.christ8421 Před 2 měsíci +5

      LOL. Instead, why don't you ask why a "successful" manufacturer needs a sponsor anyway? And given the responses this dude gives to questions, he reads everything from a script and has no idea what he's reading.

    • @NOTNOTJON

      Audible is a terrible sponsor anyway. Remember when like every channel had a sponsor... and then didn't?
      It came out that if you were outside the US, signed up with Audible, and then wanted to cancel, you had to do it twice in 2 different ways or you would keep on being charged.
      Audible has not addressed the issue yet to my knowledge (though admitantly I haven't checked in a while).

      @@j.f.christ8421yeah. so succesful, they could only start a filament testing lab if they got 16k in charity, instead of, you know, factoring that into their business plan...

      @hot_wheelz Před 2 měsíci +1

      I'd be less concerned with him not paying due respect to his sponsors and instead ask why a large "successful" manufacturer needs a sponsor to be able to afford go talk to a camera for 30 minutes. I'd also ask why he's using one of the worst sponsors in the business.
