Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Ghostbusters Ecto Goggles!

- After Adam finished his epic spacesuits build this past summer, he decompressed from that months-long project with a return to his ongoing Ghostbusters costume improvements. And that meant resuming work on his lightweight wearable replica of the Ecto goggles he's building from scratch. It starts with painting and dressing his vacuum-formed shells and them outfitting them with hand machined knobs and lenses. Here's how Adam got this essential piece of Ghostbusters costuming ready for his incognito at New York Comic Con!

If one of you fine folks over there at Tested gets a moment, can you ask Adam (and then share here!) what tool/set-up he used to put those snaps into the straps? I've been looking for something to do that on a project and I really don't even know where to start.
I may not be able to get the same thing he's using, but it would at least give me a starting point.
@@Bad_Wolf_Media It looks like he is using a Press-N-Snap. If you Google that or Snap Kit or Snap Pliers you will find a bunch of different ones at a variety of price points.
This is about the most subtle weathering job we’ve ever seen from Adam. No rust, dust, crust, or slapping with chains…just subliminal hints of use, of used-ness. Nice.
In response to the opening talk Adam. A great man once said;
"Really if we are all going to be honest with ourselves I have to admit that achieving the end of the exercise was never the point of the exercise to begin with was it?"
You. It was you mate. That quote from your ted talk has stuck with me for over a decade and i still revisit it whenever im feeling creatively drained.
You could have a live camera feed going in your cave and I'd have it on 24/7 just to hear the sounds of work being done. That alone simply inspires me to work on my own projects vs. them getting half way done then losing steam b/c I really have no idea what I'm doing most of the time.
Really appreciate you opening up at the beginning of your video. Not only a genius builder but also a man in touch with the emotions that stem from such smarts. We love you, Adam, and watching your brain tick.
I spent two years working on a model of a wooden tall ship, and when I had done my "editing passes" and installed the model in its case, it came time to clean my workspace and take the plans down off the wall... and yeah, I felt that. I really enjoyed the process of this thing coming into existence, and seeing the plans come down really drove home that that process was finished. And talking to a few older gentlemen who have multiple such builds under their belts, I learned that they had felt the same thing too, several times. So it's not weird to hear that such a major focus for you can create bittersweet feelings once it's done.
I gotta say I just love the self filmed one Day build's don't get me wrong I love pretty much all of the one day builds it's just that I like the more personal felling these have I hope there here to stay personally
Nice work on the goggles Adam! =D
You or Adam should upgrade a pair to Podcast's version.
It's awesome seeing a master do his/her work and even more enjoyable when they are doing it because they choose to. The passion and personal motivation shows
Mr. Savage, thank you. My father (machinest, mechanic, and more) also did not like to use glue which I never understood. With your insight into why I have a learned a bit more about him. One reason I like watching is learning more about my father.
Who else is looking around the workshop in these wide angle shots. So interesting trying to spot..........stuff!!! 😁👍
Oh joy, you illusive beast, bearing no relation to achievement nor gain, I hope you reign in that beast again soon.
I have never seen anybody put a bearing on the end of the stock and then stick it on a drill chuck. Pure genius.
I do love your one day builds where you explain whats going on in your head and how you come to all your conclusions about various parts of your builds
Adam your channel gives me so much joy. I love that's there's a place where us nerds, fanatics and makers can come to and rejoyce! Thanks for what you and your team does and the consistent uploads👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Always great seeing how happy Adam is when he is working on a project that he loves. Though one thing surprised me, the fact that he did not make the lens housings actually move like they would do from sourced camera parts. (Or be able to source a similar looking set from old stock.). As the Leader of the Capital Ghostbusters of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I approve of this One Day Build!
Adam Savages love for making things is the only real universal constant. And I love it
I just watched an Adam Neely (*bass) video where he goes over the feeling of depression/emptiness after a big gig where you spend a lot of time prepping for it. When it’s over, there’s a feeling of being lost. After putting so much effort and energy into something and feeling all the highs of completion/success, the pendulum swings the other way to the dark side. His recommendation was to immediately start to look toward the next project to minimize those feelings. It’s a pretty common thing, but there are ways to mitigate it. Knowing is half the battle. 👍
Adam should build a hanging cork board that he can move around and mount all his reference material above where he's working, so he can see them all at once and not have to shuffle them around to find the one he needs.
Thats a really good idea. Replying to boost this
Good idea. Then we could see his reference materials, too. However, that might cause legal issues with copyrighted materials shown on CZcams.
Beautiful!😍
Hey man, I hope you feel uplifted soon. Thanks for showing us all so many fun things.
Did anyone else's closed captioning say "adventure" when Adam coughed using his disc sander?
Also, I was glad to have this show up in my list, watched the 1st one earlier and couldn't find it. Well done good sir, as always.
Finishing a project is like finishing a good book. It's the process that's the thing. When the destination is reached you grieve a little for the journey.
Love this video great to just watch you work!
And great job on soundtrack choice. Very relaxing.
Adam will you be making a storage case for them? I really enjoy when you make boxes and cases to hold your many pieces of treasures.
Ooh! Ive been waiting for this!
great work, its nice to see the care you put no only on the final results but also on the process, i hope i could convey this attention to detail to my students, you inspire me a lot, greetings from Coobia.
Great to see a self-filmed ODB again, great result too.
Great job! My son and I (13 years old) will be challenging a build of the complete Ghostbuster cosplay from now until October 2022. Looks like we'll be 3D printing the goggles starting this weekend! :D
Amazing! If you're on Twitter, please keep us posted on your progress!
The little, “Hey kids.” threw me. I thought I was watching Dad, how do I? for a second.
I could watch these videos all day
Absolutely love watching these- particularly GB builds. Do you guys think we could do some more simple builds- like Star Lord’s Walkman- that’s scratch built, and we could follow along and do at home without buying a load of cast parts etc. The scratch built prop builds are amazing.
I totally get what you mean, I build and make things for my job and as much pride as I get in the outcome, I also feel sadness when it’s over. Luckily I get to do it for a living.
This video seems more 'Real' to me, I'm not saying the others are fake but it's just this particular video really speaks to me as a maker. I really enjoyed seeing a side of you that I've not seen before. You clearly show how much you care about projects when it gets you a bit down when a project is completed. I myself feel the same way with some projects, I'm happy when something is complete but to then not have anything to go back to once it's done can be hard.
I really enjoyed this video Adam, thank you for showing us a different perspective on building and making.
All the love to you brother.
Iron Warrior Cosplay. :)
I like this long form version. All good.
I've just watched you revamp your vacuum form machine for this build. I have to see the finished product.
Sweet!
We the internet are totally content with just watching a man work
These videos are so cozy.
For a minute there I was convinced he was going to knurl his fingers! Beautiful work!!
awesome as always :)
AN/PVS-5 night vision goggles, modded up. Many bits of the Ghostbusters kit was modded military surplus like the backpack frames.
Get some yellow snot for the eye cushion material. 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Also works as a waxing gel if you're not too picky about what your skin looks like.
So cool
As soon as I saw the texture of the padding, I knew EXACTLY where you got them from, that is brilliant, I can't wait to put that on my own.
Where DID he get them from? I ordered the original padding for the NVG from eBay but never ended up showing up, and the real thing is pretty hard to come by now. Is there another source?
nevermind jfc I swear I buffered through this video more than a few times to find the answer...
I get that post project blues, I figured it's just a normal thing. I get it when finishing a good book or tv show too.
32:43 It’s a Cobbler’s tool, it’s for texturing the grain side of leather for glue to bond.
We understand what you mean. There is an up-and-down to everything. Doesn't matter what you got, it's all relative.
We don't mind if you don't feel up to a full commentary, we are happy to listen to you mumbling to yourself! 😄
Suggestion: You should look into a scissor knurling tool. It applies pressure on two knurling wheels top and bottom and pressure is controlled by a thumb screw. It alleviates the side pressure on the workpiece.
I have never had very good luck with a side pressure tool like this, but I also do diamond pattern knurling more than straight line.
Post-Race Blues is what runners or triathletes call that "down" feeling. Completing something big that you have poured yourself into leaves you feeling empty. The number one way to try to mitigate the blues is to set another goal to look forward to, ex. another race or project.
So I guess what you would call what Adam's feeling "Post-Making Blues" or Post-Build Blues?"
I don't think I've ever been as nervous watching a video as I have been watching that approach the face lol
I watch your videos and to me they are very similar to rogue one in the sense that we know the destination we know how rogue one ended and we know you will make something amazing but like rogue one your videos are about the journey along the way you give us an amazing journey to follow you on keep it up Adam
Nice!
'The most beautiful knurl, in the world....' 🎶
Wow. Could someone point me to the music that was playing during the time lapse build montage section? It really struck a chord with me so to speak. I really really dig it. Great vibe!
Hey Adam, could you do more show and tells about all those cool new tools you have for the lathe?
Some little weathering on those stickers would look so cool
As a prior helicopter mechanic, I would always find it so satisfying to take a blank piece of sheet metal or unmixed fiberglass resin and make something functional out of it. It really is kind of zen watching something seemingly bland and boring become something useful
Almost all of those snaps have a coppery brassy Ness under the final finish...take one and go byons a little scuff it comes out a brighter color but over a week or so it really darkens up ..or after you scuff use some cold blue and rub it off
Hasbro could ask Adam to consult on producing a good production set of goggles.
You are in love while you create a masterpiece, when the romance is over you feel the loss
This is soo relaxing to watch.. "Disk sander noises" is like Metallica playing Enter Sandman :D
I’ve been looking for a surplus pair of AN/PVS-5 for this exact build!!!
Supposedly a NVG refurbisher bought them all for the internals, a Nocturn Industries. I don't think anyone's asked them what they've done with the leftover shrouds.
Lol when he's not talking to the camera I feel like I'm spying on him lol
"Don't know how much talking I'm going to do, don't know how much talking I feel like doing"
That hit me hard.
I haven't posted a video on my channel in over a year because I've just not felt creative, not been doing projects either.
I need to just start again, burnout is a PITA.
Cabinet doors and a label maker is what I’d need
did you get a new tool holder for your lathe, i like the way the tightning nut is away from the tool carriers, anyway brill video as always thanks for doing all the stuff you do for the maker world, including sharing your years of knowledge with the community
Hopefully one day Adam will put in the Polaroid feature.
Loved Podcast's version too.
Do they make an adapter (you make one) for your air cutting blade to mount a sanding bar, seems it might have even better control than by hand , faster and way easier on your wrist
Hey Adam what are your thoughts on a ultrasonic xacto knife? since they cost 399.00 im not sure it would be a great addition to my model building tools.. Thanks and i love watching you get creative.. I would love to see some more garage kit builds
I would kill to have a light weight ecto goggles! 😩
Wow. Those look great. So when do we get to see a one day Build for a RTV Ghost trap?
One thing that still surprises me about your shop, is that you don't have a spray booth, even a small tabletop one. That is the next thing I am adding to my workspace.
Him saying "Hey kids" at the start reminded me of Sam O'nella. I miss that guy
With all the dust and everything in your shop how do you keep your space suits in the background so clean and shiny?
Hey Adam, I was thinking with all that stuff you have, how do you know what you got in your shop?
Adam should add a couple of finger or glove prints of a UV fluorescent paint where you would naturally grab it to pull them off, as though he forgot to clean off some ectoplasm after a busting a ghost.
PPD after a big project comes together and is finished? Oh yeah, brother, all the time. Which drives me, inevitably, to the next feel-good project.
You could almost make one of these as a VR helmet shell, considering how lightweight it is, and how close they look to VR goggles, with enough room for the headset in that space (with some modification).
Is the red acetone bottle available for sale someplace? Thanks!
I love Adams builds; always a pleasure to watch.
But I do wonder if he's ever considered trying to add functionality to prop replicas... Like an ir monocular and a telescoping jewelers loupe to these goggles perhaps?
"I know it doesn't look straight, but no one will ever notice." - "OK we're doing it again" lol
Hi I’ve watched most of not all of your posts and I’ve seen you use bicarbonate of soda dusting on things as you make them. Can I ask what that is for please? Sorry if I’ve missed the explanation for that in the past! 👍
Right. Aim the torch at the acetone container. That will weather everything.
You gotta do the ghost trap at some point or even the PKE Meter
“Are those heavy”
“Yeah”
“Put it down, it’s expensive”
17:43 ... Mars Attack ak ak ak ak
I would want to turn them into simple VR goggles for my phone, then watch movies with the and see how people react!
What is the red pump looking can on your workbench?
What is the green stencil Adam uses around the six minute mark?
It's ok, Adam! We got your back!
🤗👍👍👍👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙👊👊👊so so so cool mr. Savage
What's the reason for using the baking soda?
What is that cool acetone dispenser?
Glad even the pros end up bleeding when working on stuff...LOL
Is there a hand knurling tool? Like a pipe cutter like device, but instead of a cutting blade, it has knurling teeth.
You know, I think I'd really like to see Adam to a project where he's basically handed a hero prop from a film and told "Ok, we need you to make another hero quality standin of this prop, as well as a stunt version, and about 10 more backward quality level copies of it" Just to see how he tackles that sort of duplication. Cos I feel like that's a lot of what some guy working in the proper department of a movie would do.
I want one. If you make any more.
When Adam says he clean up the shop i always think where did he do that.. 😅
whats with the baking soda at the start while sanding?
