  • Welcome to the TCG-101 series - the best way to become a better duelist with lessons in under 10 minutes.
    In this lesson, I'll go over how I approach card evaluation! Being able to evaluate cards yourself is a useful skill, as these will frequently change as new cards are added and adjusted. How good a card is also changes based on what characters and other cards you play them with! Newer players often also overestimate cards with large effects, overlooking their restrictions or delay in their effects. By the end of this lesson, you may not become an expert at card evaluation, but I hope it will give you a better appreciation of why pro players tend to favor specific cards, and what to look out for with new and existing cards to know which are good, and also when those cards are good!

    As a veteran MTG and TCG/CCG player I have learnt a very good addage.
    "If you think you can evaluate cards then you can't evaluate cards"
    Sometimes something you dismiss as bad another absolutely cooks with and it becomes meta. Pair that with new releases and things get messy quick.
    Either way absolutely astounding vid and I'm rooting for you to hit 2K by the end of the year!!

      Thank you!!
      I think being incorrect is inevitable - since I'm doing patch summaries I inevitably have to make some early calls which can be wrong. The main thing is to keep an open mind when you see the card performing well.
      Though the takeaway here is, gotta be mindful why it works in that specific deck and not generalize too much.

    @HearterSG Před 5 měsíci +10

    Great vid! Would have liked to see information on how people can find winning deck lists for reference/learning/baseline.
    Another thing I'd like to add - One trap that many less experienced card game players fall into is forgetting to account for the card itself when they look at the cost of the card. The easiest example is comparing Liyue Harbor (2 cost location: 2 draw at end of turn. 2 uses) against 2x Strategize. Liyue Harbor is 2 dice for 4 cards, and 2 Strategize is also 2 dice for 4 cards but you get them immediately, so 2x Strategize just looks better. However, when you add in the 'hidden' cost of the card itself, it's easy to see that Strategize costs 2 cards and 2 dice for 4 cards, for a gain of 2 cards overall, while Liyue Harbor is 1 card and 2 dice for 4 cards, for a gain of 3 cards overall, a whole 50% more cards gained than 2x Strategize. Of course, it's countered by the Delay like you explained in this video so it's not a slam dunk.

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Yeah that's a really good point and totally true - I didn't quite have time to go deep into that to keep the video under time, but a card that combines 2 cards in one is extremely powerful - taking Liben as the example of Strategize + Bestest with a 1 round delay.
      But I think it's easier for a player to want to play Liyue Harbor over Strategize, seeing 4 cards vs 2, but most decks prefer it the other way around.

    Super informative vid, as a fellow TCG enthusiast whos been playing for months now I love all the info you can get ^^
    Something I learned to really get ahead and achieve mastery is to keep challenging - against others and yourself by studying and widening your horizons to all the opportunities characters and cards can give you.
    I believe thay even if some characters/decks are 'stronger' or more 'meta' than others, it really goes down to *how* and *when* they're used, because like in actual Genshin gameplay - everyone has their combat merits and specialities that just need to be efficiently utilized
    Then use all that knowledge to gain some foresight and anticipation during matches and get better and better.

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes there's definitely a lot that can work outside of the established decks, and even those have some flexibility in which characters you want to use in specific slots.
      I'm really a fan of any tournament format that includes some bans, because when you're not allowed to repeat characters in decks and people can ban some decks it adds a LOT of variety to what is possible

    Thanks for the video, of course cards in decks will differentiate based on their archetypes for example stall would want tenacity of the milleth all the time basically,combo decks with parametric,and aggro decks with fast and efficient cards. Knowing these types of cards in decks allows you to guess what your opponents cards in hands are and potentially see what their play is.

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  Před 5 měsíci

      Yes! Playing around opponents possible cards is definitely another factor, but probably quite advanced for the average player haha. I didn't have much time to go into which cards are preferred by which archetype, but there definitely is a pattern

  • @Ashes719
    @Ashes719 Před 5 měsíci +4

    I would love any information on how to evaluate energy - I really struggle to think about it, e.g. I know sometimes holding on to a burst is desireable even if it means wasting an energy, but figuring out when is tricky.

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Energy is definitely more advanced and I left it out here, so might be worth covering in a different lesson. Card wise though Starsigns is a baseline value for 1 energy.
      The scenario you're describing of when to burst though is even harder to answer because it mostly depends on how the game is going and the matchup.
      If your opponent has one key character you need to take out as a priority, saving bursts can be a good idea. Otherwise generally avoiding overkill if you can is another thing to watch for

  • @UnrealityZero
    @UnrealityZero Před 5 měsíci +2

    This is a pretty common analysis for turn based games, value vs tempo
    Like in Chess, winning by value is being up a rook then trading every other piece while tempo is doing a flashy queen sac for mate
    Value in Invokation is relatively well defined at 1 card = 1 dice = 1 health/damage
    Tempo is usually more nebulous but it can be seen as turns or being able to use faster, both getting the value and being able to use it to begin with
    L-It-T Me does kind of set the value of a turn as 1 card while a ton of cards have a 1 less dice for 1 round delay
    Every card can also immediately be used to tune dice and effectively be half a Bestest, puts into question the efficacy of that card
    That said you never want to just use fair stuff but cards can't be designed to be unfair so its about using them in unfair ways
    Would love to see you do more in depth analysis but doubt its a good format for CZcams

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Definitely, at some point I will for sure do one analysing tempo a little bit, though I prefer the term pressure for GITCG specifically.

      @@blepthecat For calculating how many card-drawing cards should we add,
      I guess all we need to do is to setup a funtion f(N), and use differential to calculate when the function reach its maximum, that's when the card-drawing cards maximize value ,
      f(N) = Effective Draws * DF = (TotalAdditionalDraws×E ) * DF = (N * D * E) * DF
      N (Number of Card-Drawing Cards );
      D (Additional Draws per Card-Drawing Card provided);
      E (Effectiveness Factor),as u mentioned,some factors like flexibility or whether it is delayed from to benefits
      DF(Dilution Factor ),To represent the diminishing returns of having too many card-drawing cards
      To simplify the calculation, we only consider the factors that matters while treating some factors like E as constant as for controlled variable method .
      f(N) = N * D * DF
      the issue now becomes what should the DF be,what model to choose, a Linear Model?a Inverse Model?a Logarithmic Model or smth else?

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  Před 4 měsíci

      @@yanyuisam haha while I normally like math a lot (and at some point I will do a deep dive on dice fixing and dice rolling with math), I think this is a bit too complex of a problem.
      For example how you use card draw changes based on what kind of deck you're building, as well as even what your opponent is doing. The reason 1 cost cards are so much better than 2 is because it's easier to fit into a turn when you have extra dice left - and card draw tends to be one of the best things to do with 'spare' dice

      Totally! The deck relies less on icy quills even than Shenhemo so it wasn't affected by the nerf much.
