This is the story of the Indian subcontinent told through the treasures of three very different people, places and dynasties that have shaped the modern Indian world.
The Mughals created the most famous and dazzling empire that India has ever seen, from the Taj Mahal to fabulously intricate miniatures of court life.
But in the process, did they bring civilisation to India or tear it apart?
From the moment the first Mughal emperor Babur arrived from Afghanistan the debate began - were the Mughals imposing their own religion of Islam on a Hindu country, or were they open to the religion and art of the country they were conquering?
The artworks the Mughals left behind over their 200-year empire - even the very buildings which have traces of Hindu architecture as well as Muslim - clearly show how this debate played out, and Sona Datta traces how this most spectacular of all Indian civilisations also sowed the seeds of discord.

I acknowledge today that during partition of 1947 in the heat of summer Muslim and Hindu families suffering and pain was inhumane and historic and unending and avoidable and unnecessary and left scarves on many generations.i witnessed such a suffering in my town in Sindh during the floods of 2010 and saw thousands of people walking along with their families and cattle and little babies in each arm for hundreds of kilometers during the night and the roads filled with shoes of my people because their both hands were filled with babies and I helped them more than I have ever helped for over three months with my team of volunteers and personal loan from bank and rescue Navy boats but it was simply too painful to see all that tragedy unfold

Hi from New York, I just finished watching the documentary on Taj and liked it 👍I saw some dilapidated buildings (mumtaj mahal’s eunuch’s residence) which Indian govt has taken no interest in to preserve, as unfortunate. Here in US, our history only goes back to 250+ years (1776) and in India, 500+ years of Mughal history is left for ruins. Documentary was well done and I enjoyed watching it 😊

Sona was bound to get Dalrymple to play expert,a brilliant historian of Delhi although I’m sure many Indian Historians could do just as good.When in India I was amazed at the amount of amazing architecture that were allowed to fall to pieces.It shows that this was made for the BBC so was not exactly accurate but very well made.

Very informative great job lots of great references. Studying history most fall comes from within rather from outside . Russian kill their last king . Its was sad to hear his own son imprisoned his father . We need to learn hear like the hitting people they were destroyed from with in every body wants to be king. So was Rome. And another fact we fastnated with tombs like the pyramid in Egypt and the taj mal in India . So what did we learn from our ancestors learning to get along prevent wars but since everybody wants to rule the world is when we have war . So bottom line can we just get along and have peace on earth

Excellent history lesson from which we should embrace and learn what Akhbar envisoned for the vast diversity which is India today.
Akbar imposed Persian lang. on native population unlike Hindu-Buddhist kindoms {even till modern times hence lang. issue became so debated in modern India} which never imposed single lang. historically, so much for so called tolerance.
Yes, akbar chose to ignore Islamic teachings of imposing ji zya and subjugation the " unbelievers " or force them to convert or face the sword. He ignored the brutal teachings of subjugating and committing violence on unbelievers. He instead, though it took him some time to realise, chose the Vedic viewpoint of being pluralistic, adopting arts and sciences, taking interest in Hindu architecture, not killing innocent animals, and becoming vegetarian. Vedic India has this effect on some invaders.

Very nice series well made. I was there in India last month. Walking amongst the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s Tomb, Jama Masjid, and many others, I was truly awe inspired seeing up close the treasures hand crafted by the Mughal Empire over many years.
This crooked reporter glorifies the invadors as Indian saviours. We as hindu and as Indians should wipe these parasites of the planet.
Only the Mughal monuments? What about the Jantar Mantar, built by Raja Jai Singh in 1724, and Indraprastha of the Pandavas in Mahabharata.
All she talks about is how Mughals did this harm and that harm . Yet to hear an unbiased word from her mouth

Awesome series...I have been to the Taj Mahal and it is the single most fascinating building in the world. I was awestruck. It is no doubt the greatest symbol of an era as well as a dynasty of gifted innovators. Excellent background song in the beginning and at the end by the way...whats the name? Bravo

IT WAS VERY PERSIAN.The mughals did not identify with indigenous art and culture.Tajmahal does not represent the whole of India.Konark Ajanta Ilora Dance festival of khajuraho Benares or Kashi Budhgaya are integral part of India.

Mother India is like a deep ocean. Fierce storms may churn up mountainous waves, but they all pass and the great ocean remains calm as usual.
The Buddha statues that were damaged are in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. The damage was done by the Afghan Taliban 1.0. Never heard of any well known Buddha statues in Pakistan.
Confusing babur did not defeated a hindu king but a muslim Sultan of delhi. Agra was not a big city before akbar. Has this series done his research

Aurangzeb is a popular Mughal emperor in Pakistan, but no mention of Akbar. Draw your own conclusions. Gen. Zia ul Haq has an uncanny resemblance to Aurangzeb. India and Pakistan are like the summer and the winter. They are the opposites, but there can’t be one without the other. One can never know the South Asia without knowing both the countries.

Dr Sona Datta doesn't appear to know much about the the hard facts of the Mughal history. She mentions folklore and legends, but leave significant info out. She barely talked much about Humayun, Babur's son in how he lost the new empire then later reclaimed it. That was kind of important to know. Why did Akbar build a palace at Fatehpur Sikri? There was some significance to that and the three sons the living saint told him he was to have. And where did Sona get the thing about Akbar having some kind of spiritual enlightenment after one of Akbar's big hunts, more folklore? She does not know much about this subject and is just making many things up. Can't take this doc seriously.
