It's just nature. Survival of the toughest, smartest, strongest, richest, fittest. Animals all do this, too. Look at lions. They oppress females, kill their babies just to mate with lionesses, who expect good sex every 20 minutes and the males expect them to do all the hunting work to feed the pride, as well as raise the cubs. And then the young teenage male dudes decide they want sex partners and simply kill some old male pride leader, kill all the lionesses' cubs and have a good age old male sexual orgy. While the poor old man lion just has 6o wander off alone, probably suffering dementia of all the rotten masculine power abuses he perpetrated in his hey day. And just gets preyed upon himself and eaten, even if his hide is pretty tough and sinewy. But, as humans, we could seek to rise above our animal barbarity, without denying we are still a part of the animal order. We are a bit more evolved, I hope... But sometimes wonder...

In my home state in India, 90% seats are through reservations. Each politician promising affirmative action to a caste-based vote bank; this has led to a race to the bottom. And another thing is with documentaries like this, there is always a risk of sampling bias; and painting everything with a very broad brush. Your people century ago discriminated people of former british colonies while your people were serving british gov as low and mid class ranking civil servants ( Indians were second class british citizens and people of other colonies were like 3rd class citizens under british rule century ago).
Well you are the only society who served invaders (brits) willingly.
MillionS of indians served in british army. And they also served as low and middle ranking officers in british civil service.
This is reality that your historians don't tell you.

Many similar things happened . If this thing weren't the case , than nobody cares . As majority of po population of india is under reservation , OBC alone account for more than 50 % of India's population . So it's not about Upper caste & Lower caste but it's about inequality & power . In India there where no proper action taken by government , like China does against their private landlord . In india this Zamindar doesn't get taxed , as they are classified as Farmer . Unfortunately the truth is that it is going to stay as long as Hindu religion is going to survive. It already started restrengthening after extreme ring wing hindu religious political party called BJP came to power in 2014. It was in decay for a few decades after the new constitution outlawed it in 1956 and a more liberal and modern political party Congress who ruled previously tried to remove It. Is a system which remained as a system of administration for 2000 years. It is not easy to wipe off such deep rooted social structure.

I have a lot to say!
First off, the Brits didn't rigidify the caste system. It has always been rigid with no mobility. It's based on Manu's laws. The Brits only abided by it because it's deeply entrenched.
Those who say "it's only a rural thing" or "young generation doesn't care" are either ignorant or trying to cloak it. The young generation may not mind socializing but they will rarely downgrade in matrimony. Casteism in urban India is brilliantly cloaked. Check out top honchos in private and public enterprises; check out white collar positions and it's hard to find a lower caste person.
While the lower castes are lucky that they get to eat meat, the history behind this is rather dark. Back in Vedic times, animal sacrifices were common and the lower castes were called upon to clean up. They would use the carcass as food.
Also, in the Vedic times, every caste would eat meat including the priestly and warrior castes. In fact, the vedas talk about offering beef to a Hindu priest. However, with the introduction of Jainism the Hindus had to do something to curb this fast spreading religion with it's non-violent ethos. That's when they switched to vegetarianism.
The biggest insult was when the lady positioned Gandhi as some sort of savior of the lower castes. He was one of the biggest casteists of his day, who went on an indefinite fast to protest the granting of a separate electorate to lower castes/Dalits. Mind you, he was fine with other communities getting separate electorates. "Harijan" is just his red herring to hide his casteism.
I am also shocked that as the narrator and the lady (interviewed) spoke of Constitution, the didn't mention Dr. Ambedkar, the chief architect, the first law minister of India, and a Dalit who championed human rights and labor code in India and fought for decades to get equal rights for Dalits. Indians have literally written Ambedkar's name and work out of the history.

Do you think these kinds of things are prevalent in a lot of faucets of Indian society or is this only a practice in more rural, outback or just developmentally stunted communities as well as by those already in power? I doubt a Brahmin CEO would want to give up this kind of thought process because it gives them a free, default level of power.
Secondly, what do people who still follow the caste system think of those from lesser castes who become something bigger? Do they see Dalit doctors or lawyers or government officials and go “oh he must’ve gotten lucky or gotten in via corruption” or something?
I’m curious because it’s strange to me how folks can still cling on to something like this even as it’s been made illegal. Such as the young man who begings speaking at the 4:37 time stamp. I was very much interested in what he had to say but I could not understand most of the words he was saying. The Closed caption is in a language that is not English, but I don't know what language it is, maybe German or French or Portuguese?

Few Indians seem to understand the true meaning of Reservation - it is for REPRESENTATION. Economic class is a completely different matter. Reservations on the basis of caste are for covering the lack of presence of lower castes and Dalits in positions of power. Note ANY institution - educational, political, journalistic, corporate - you will find UCs disproportionately represented. But none of these comfortable middle class UC people want to confront this. Why? Because they don't want to lose their privilege and power.

@Travis Bickle a hardworking and poor forward caste person scoring 98 percent out of 100 percent is still not getting his / her Desired college but a reserved person scoring 60 percent is getting the same. Therefore, it demotivates 220 million forward caste people living in the country and makes them second class citizens. Only Top 1 percent of those 220 million forward caste are rich & aristocratic the remaining forward caste is struggling in local buses & local trains, doing menial jobs, working as underpaid slaves of Multinational corporates, etc. The biggest irony is that the person who introduced the reservation system for SC / ST strictly warned the Constituent Assembly that this reservation system is temporary and should not extend for more 10-20 years maximum otherwise it would become a mere shortcut and appeasement tool for rich politicians who are already sitting in power. Unfortunately that happened.

Sanskrit is not an old language - the languages that were old in the North Indian subcontinent were Prakrit and Pali languages. There is a huge amount of confusion about Prakrit languages. There are 12 major North Indian languages 1, Apabhraṃśa (Prakrit); 2. Ardhamagadhi(Prakrit); 3. Dramili (oldest Prakrit); 4. Elu; 5. Gandhari; 6. Kamarupi; 7. Magadhi; 8. Maharashtri; 9. Paishachi; 10. Pali (also mentioned as Prakrit by some kingdoms); 11. Shauraseni; 12. Khasa. But each language is different and a few are referred to as Prakrit language at different times especially the Dramili is the language used in the Ashoka edicts as Prakrit language which is the oldest written record for Pali and Prakrit. Ancient India used Pali and Prakrit languages in Jainism and Buddhist literature. Sanskrit is a new language that was created by refining, merging, and choosing grammar and verbiage of all these 12 major languages- that’s why there is no record of written Sanskrit in ancient monuments or Jainism and Pali literature which were the oldest religions of Ancient India. Hence the claim that Sanskrit is old is not proven because of this and even though Rig Veda was first written down in the 14th century AD all claims are only verbal and they wrongly point to the written literature records of Prakrit or Pali languages as Sanskrit. Hindi was formed much later by choosing the largest spoken dialect of Prakrit in present-day Uttar Pradesh. So it is very clear that anything written in Sanskrit is newly written literature after Sanskrit was formed. So the caste system and its ideology were written only in Sanskrit language texts such as Manusmriti which describes and ranks four varnas, and prescribes their occupations, requirements, and duties, or Dharma - has come into India by migrants that created Sanskrit and wanted to benefit from this fascism. This system later was supported by foreign invaders and European colonists to divide and rule the region’s population. As the - self-proclaimed high caste - Brahmins wanted to show that they were also a native to the Indian subcontinent and not of Indo-European origin like their languages, they claimed Sanskrit to be an older language and newly drafted caste texts as old well.
