Is Watch Data Accurate | V02 MAX Test Before a Marathon

  • In today's video, we had the awesome opportunity to do a V02 max test at a University lab. Seeing that Boston is in just 2 weeks, it seems like the perfect time to see what my numbers are! The question is, does my Coros Pace 2 give me and accurate reading on what my V02 max actually is? Let's find out!
Special Shoutout to Braeden for letting me take the test in the lab and educating me more on V02 max and other fitness metrics!

I am 66 y/o. Last year over a six month period I did three of these tests at the University of Michigan (as part of a study). The treadmill was not as wide or long as the one you used, there blood draws DURING the run (YIKES!), and multiple electrodes (with a 1.5# collection device firmly strapped to the midsection). My latest version IPhone predicted 53-54s. The numbers from the tests were 57.4 to 59.2. I am pretty well trained and running the USATF Masters Nationals 1/2M the day before Boston. I am not a firm believer that the VO2 numbers are good predictor of performance however. Hope you do well in Boston and look forward to your next vid drop.

You did use a COSMED metabolic cart for the test and they are quite poor at dealing with high VO2s from athletes (over-estimates). Try do another one using a different metabolic cart at the end of your next marathon prep, I recommend using a MOXUS if you can.

I’m also running Boston in two weeks and was offered the opportunity to do a VO2Max test. I’m feeling pretty fit and am curious to find out this data but on second thought, it seems like a pretty grueling test and doesn’t really fit in my tapering plan. I think I’ll wait until after I’ve recovered from Boston to try out it out.

Do you incorporate pull ups in your strength/core routine? I have lately it’s been really helping my stability and endurance I think. I’m just asking because your back looks pretty muscular

My Garmin estimate was off by quite a bit, got to do a vo2max test for a study. Wasn't running, but cycling and I use a power meter + hr chest strap. Garmin estimated 69, lab test was 80.5.

Always curious about my vo2max. As a hill runner, I would do horrible on a test that increases speed and not gradient. Maybe less of a factor here for you if you've got the legs for a couple 4:30/miles.

Im about to get a Garmin watch and Im curious what it estimates. As long as it’s trending consistently the actual number really doesn’t matter.
I’ve tested my VO2Max in the lab a couple of times. Highest I ever tested was 72.5 on the bike. We used to use sub maximal tests to estimate students fitness, they are popular in the clinical setting as they are much safer than true VO2max tests. You essentially track their heart rate up through zone 2 or 3 depending on the protocol, enter the results into a formula and get the estimated max.
They seemed to work well for the general population but they fall apart for anyone with a true VO2Max over about 60-65. The calculations just weren’t able to account for that.
The watches are looking at much more data over a longer period of time so it makes sense they would get so close, still impressive.

Update: I did a Vo2Max last week for my Exercise Science lab class. Turns out there are few different procedures for this test. Mine was the "Bruce" model; the intensity increases every stage, so does the incline. My Coros said that mine was at 63. For the lab test, I got 68.9 (M | 22, Ultra runner).

I don’t understand what he said about your 2 mile being around 9mins if your top end speed was 4:34.. if you could hold that top end speed for 2 miles it’d be 9:08, but that’s top end and holding that for that long is rough. explanation?

    • @WildOutdoorLiving
      @WildOutdoorLiving Před rokem

VO2max is not a reliable indicator of speed all by itself. Your natural running economy and specific running fitness plays a big role in speed. It’s also really important that your weight is entered into the watch correctly as that’s part of the calculation. (Volume of Oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute)

  • @matthiassventoest6800

grain of salt.., I know it’s a just a ballpark estimate, and that’s all I take it for.
You have to pay money for accuracy (or be part of a study) and most ppl pay between 200-600/700 for a watch.., I don’t see it.

  • @ag-bk5wf

Or instead... just look up the study that he cites with his statement, which has more validity than your 'reckon'.
Plenty of families involved in high level sports (not sure he even mentioned the olympics...).
