  • This is Episode 1 of several videos capturing the rebuild of one of my transmissions. I'll be upgrading this one again with Synchrotech carbon lined synchro rings and a couple of development gears for a popular company. The other gears have already been modified with cryo treatment, REM Polished, and an oil adsorbent coating applied, which is why the gears appear black.

    Excellent video for a at home first timer. I had a shop install my ppg gears, and my stock syncros (4th particularly) is starting to give me a lil scratch if revved highed (85k miles big turbo e30 since about 40k miles and beaten hard daily). Think this is something I can tackle thanks to to this video series seriously doesn’t look too hard

      Synchrotech has carbon synchros sold as rings only or a master kit with bearings, sleeves, seals, and springs. For the mileage you stated, you might consider the master kit so you have a fresh rebuild. I've noticed mush smoother shifting at high rpm with these synchros. Stock brass rings are not going to slow the gears down quick enough for smooth engagement.
      The intent for this video series was for me to practice making videos and to help our community. If people are breaking gears, they should add a shop press for a few hundred dollars to do the work themselves. My press has come in handy for several projects. I just added an anti lift kit and used it to press the old bushings off the control arms. I'm also rebuilding transmissions for friends and have been using it quite a bit for that.
      Keep me posted on how things go. I'm also on CivicX.com as Chris_19Si if you want to see more discussion on transmission and speedometer calibration units.

    Currently have this trans up in the air. I’m getting Ppg gears installed but I’m being told I need new hubs? Is that something they sell separately im being told I have to buy the whole gear set for it

      I'm surprised to hear you need to replace your hubs. Are you sure it's the hubs or just the sleeves? Synchrotech sells the sleeves separately, or included in a Master Kit, along with carbon synchros and bearings, but they don't seem to supply the hubs. I'd call them to be sure there isn't a compatible part from a different series transmission that they do sell. Honda seems to package their hubs with other parts for an assembly, but very expensive if you only need one of the parts. Again, I'd confirm with the builder they they actually need new hubs before spending a bunch more money. With my understanding, the sleeves would be the high wear part in that assembly, with the hubs only used in sliding, not ever in engagement like the sleeves. Keep in mind, the brass synchro rings only slow the parts down enough for the sleeves to climb onto the side teeth of the gears. The wear and tear should be limited to the braking surface of the synchro rings and the sleeves as they make their way onto the side teeth. The hubs just transfer torque. The torque path is from the input shaft to a gear, then to the an output shaft gear to the teeth, which are on the side of that gear, then to the sleeve, to the hub, to the output shaft, out to the diff, and ultimately to the pavement!

    Just lost 4th on mine. Looking now for a rebuild. How’s the new parts you put in?

      The video you are commenting on includes Synchrotech carbon lined synchro rings and development gears on 3rd and 4th. Everything else is stock. I have not installed this trans yet to comment on either of the two upgrades. The transmission I'm driving with now has CAPTS 3rd and 4th gear upgrades, but everything else is stock. As for those gears, I can't say enough. There is a little gear whine because the tooth profile is so large, but I haven't broken them yet, so that's great. Waiting on 5th gear to show up in order to upgrade that trans again, and will add carbon synchros to improve shifting. This will likely be the final configuration as 1st and 2nd are strong enough and 6th is just for highway cruising.
      Have you pulled your trans before or will this be your first time? Will you be planning to rebuild the trans yourself or send it out??

      I just wanted to update you on how the new parts feel. The carbon synchros are super smooth now that they are broken in. I've rebuilt a few other transmissions for other people with the same synchros and upgraded gears and they are saying the same thing. The synchros are fantastic. I've been practicing no lift shifting lately and still getting used to that, but the quick shifts while holding the throttle pedal down is no problem. I can't wait to reinstall the CAPTS transmission to experience the new 5th gear.

    Are the tested gears becoming available soon?

    • @27Worx
      @27Worx  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I was waiting for a corrected pair of gears to finish the build since one gear was out of spec. I'll see where that is and maybe comment after it's finally installed. CAPTS produces individual gears that are available now if you contact him on Facebook.

      Looks like RV6 has a beta version out now. I'm aware of an issue holding high HP, but that's a limited case. CAPTS would be my advice until there are more reviews on RV6. It's nice to see more players for our transmission.

      I live in the Dayton, Ohio area. Where are you? Also, the videos were intended to help remove the mystery of what's inside these things and the tools required to rebuild them. Adding the shop press is the only real expense for tools and the tool I use to spread the snap ring. Other than that, if you are breaking gears, you should literally gear up for working on your car more. These are expensive repairs/mods if you have to have other people do it. If you are serious about doing it yourself, I'd be willing to discuss it more outside these comments. I've helped several other people already over the internet, and they are enjoying their results.

    The way he uses the impact gun makes me think he's drunk.

    • @27Worx
      @27Worx  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Funny you should mention that. The impact gun was brand new. This was my first time using it. My extension kept trying to fall off. I was also getting used to the finger tight feature and other excuses. I've used it quite a bit since, and much more comfortable. Are you rebuilding a transmission? Just curious.

      @@27Worx I'm thinking I will need some improved gearing sooner or later, if just for piece of mind. I replaced my clutch because labor costs are really high, but I'm thinking transmission might be over my head.

    • @27Worx
      @27Worx  Před 4 měsíci

      @@gotdammit rebuilding a transmission without damage is no big deal. There is a manual available for downloading on Civicx.com. That manual, a shop press from Harbor Freight and some hand tools is all you need. The video series I did is only missing the feeling you get from a fresh assembly. You'll get that on your own if you upgrade before destroying a gear. When you are serious about it, contact me again. It's really not that bad.

      I have since cleaned up the garage and reorganized it a bit. Got several projects between house renovations, patio project, both cars, etc. The garage has to change for each one. Still, no excuses for letting it go.

    • @27Worx
      @27Worx  Před 6 měsíci

      @@Duskpup it's interesting how the discussion is over my garage instead of the transmission. I'm a typical guy in a typical house, with a typical garage and tool set. The garage layout changes to meet whatever project I'm working on, and sometimes gets a bit cluttered dealing with overlapping projects. I don't like it either, but it is what it is. I wish I had more space to spread things out, but a 2-car garage has to work for now. When I put the body back on the Ghia, I get more space, but I have to finish the bodywork before that happens. I'll take whatever criticism comes my way, which is what I get for putting myself out on the internet, but the intent for this content was to help people save a ton of money by doing a repair themselves. I did not intend to spend much time debating the garage space, and hope these videos are helping people consider fixing their transmissions themselves, or learning more about what's inside as they work with a friend or shop.
