- I FOUND A JERR-DAN 28FT ROLLBACK FOR SALE. I TRIED TO IGNORE IT BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE A FEW BUT THAT DIDNT WORK OUT SO WELL. I HAVE BEEN GATHERING PARTS FOR AN UPCOMING BUILD AND THIS WAS INTENDED TO BE ONE THE KEY PARTS FOR IT. AFTER SOME CONSIDERATION, I THINK I HAVE DECIDED TO USE IT FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BUILD.

Putting a truck back on the road is always a win, the red KW.
Hi JC, my vote is the second cabover, the parts truck. Would love to see that old iron fixed up and back on the road working! 👍
Your comments of being in the truck “right” sounds more like the reseller than the “forever truck “ builder coming out in you.
That’s what makes your videos enjoyable to me, thanks JC.
there is more to building a good functioning, reliable, suitable and cost effective truck than some people think.
I've been watching your channel for about 4 years and I love it when you make the occasional video(s) about heavy equipment instead of the light and medium duty equipment. I am really looking forward to the builds on these two K100s. Hoping to see a new video some day of the old w900. Love the channel!!! Your detail and explanations and amazing.
we appreciate you watching. i have quite a few projects already started that we are going to get finished up this year.
Cabover rollback, I like the way you think . Cabover wrecker and a Cabover rollback. Lot of work but projects are. Have a great evening JC.
Yup. Parts truck. Man…… you got a lot of plane and projects. You upload content and I’ll watch with thumbs UP. Thanks JC
My .02 cents is this should be the last roll back you ever want. With that considered do what you want that your going to enjoy doing and driving the most.
I agree that the red kw would be the best option, like you said. You will have to do the frame, suspension, wheel and tires anyways so may as well do it to something that'll have a sleeper. Cab overs are cool anyways. And with that n14 you have it'd be a pretty nice reliable truck when finished
Putting a parts truck back on the road is really nice too, they don't make them anymore and it looks like it's got a lot of potential especially if you are in it for a good price
The red cabover would be a cool build, it looks like that new bed needs lots of metal work.
if that bed didnt need work, i couldnt afford it!
The Red Kenworth Cabover is a great truck to use . It's really Cool . Great video .
Mr JC Can not wait to see this project. I would like to see one of the cab overs. Thanks sharing and stay safe.
it will be a very long build for sure.
I like the cab over option for the rollback would be really cool when it was done!
Well now, that would make a crazy "tiny-house" swap-body transporter.
Especially if you had an acreage to leave the house on, whenever needing the flatbed for other uses.
That way - you would have a portable home and an income earner - all in one unit.
i do believe that would be a perfect choice for both Kenworth trucks. I just love K/W trucks. great video as always
I really enjoy your videos. I like how you explain things.
I think the red cab-over 'bailey trucking' KW is a fantastic candidate for the build!
My vote is for the Pete just looks cool
Busy busy JC. Cab over would be easier for good weight distribution! Just send any one of them rigs over here and I will start line hauling again. Parcel post should be ok. I’m allowed to dream huh. Hello Mrs JC.
Over the years I’ve come to appreciate just how cool and nostalgic cabover semi’s are. Either one you choose It would be an awesome truck regardless, with a ton of character. Take care J.C👍
I'd love to see what the future holds for ya. You got tons of projects and trucks around.
Red Kenworth. Get it back on the road as a bad ass rollback truck!
Came back to rewatch this video after watching the cab over video. My lowboy is rusty too though not as bad as the rollback. When I had the Mack on there, I had to let the air out of all the tires so I had the idea to put in wells 8-10 inches so the that wouldn’t be necessary. I want to do the work myself even though I’ve never welded or done anything like that before.
if i can do this work just about anyone can. you got this.
My 2 cents, the red KW with the pusher axle from the international would look badass in my opinion. With the N14 as well. Great vid JC!
The cab over I drove was a stretched out big bunk cabover KW back in the early 80s they took four 100 gal fuel tanks and welded two together for each side so you had 400 gallons it was setup to run to the west coast weekly it was hard to get into places from being stretched out like it was but it rode so smooth I ran back and forth from southwest Va up to Plymouth Ohio for onions took them to Knoxville Tenn and loaded what ever that went to Tampa or somewhere in that area then loaded produce coming back up every week . the 379 Pete would be nice as well but alot more work putting a sleeper on and so forth but it's your choice since you will the one building it and driving it but im looking forward to the build whichever one you choose
I'm with you JC the parts truck. To me any cabover with the length issue is a must.
Greetings from the UK
The cab over builds would be awesome jc. Great vid like always buddy!
oh yeah, build a cabover rollback. Awesome
I just so admire all you do, I have been small time compared to you, Love this!
im small time compared to the folks work i admire.
I agree with you and would love to see you build both kenwoods as you were talking and makes most sense for what you have in mind
Had many rollbacks the 3 that work everyday with wood floors were the best all around!
Hello from the Netherlands.
the red kw
thanks for the video JC.
Sincerely Hollandduck
hello jc & mrs.smith its is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy
Like the growl in the truck. Sounds strong.
Hello JC, that's what i admire on you. You work on trucks thats what its most possible advantages its going to be. Planning the best before working on it. And not sacrificing the expences that goes with it.(making the money's and efforts worth.)and gets the best results as expected. I really learn a lot from you. Keep it up. God bless. And keep safe.
You have the idea of what you want cab for. COE gives extra frame.
I like Cabovers .
The other is your time invested. The all red might just need good buffing to bring color back from view
Tires load range besides size don't forget.
You are really out in no man’s land!
I like the red cabover!
Cabovers have my ❤ man.... My first driving job was hauling cars with a '94 K100 N14 9 speed ! I gotta say though the 379 is alot more convenient to climb in and out of but its not like you are towing everyday so I definately have to give my vote to the red KW !
yep. wont be using it every day....climbing in and out as i get older isnt going to be easy.
Looking foward to this build
Fun to see the beginning of a project that you plan to keep! It is always hard to make something really nice and then see it leave! I just finished building a 27' rollback for myself, 1999 FLd112, 430hp c12, 10sp autoshift, full lockers. Yes I understand fighting the height issue and I thought about finding a car hauler chassis with the low 19.5's , but the ground clearance is so bad that I would always be dragging the tanks. I figured if I needed 6" of height either let the air out of the front tires, or wait for nicer weather and throw it on the Ledwell, with 17.5 tires I can get 11' high on the deck! have fun!!
i cant get the weight capacity with the 19.5" tires. an under reach or a lowboy will take care of the things that are too high
That would look awesome on there
I’m really looking forward to what ever you choose JC on that flat top. Cheers Steve 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Red KW for the Win!!!
I think one of the cabovers would be the best choice. Just stinks the work that’s involved. But to not have a hood out in front of you plus the sleeper length wise just makes sense.
Great video J.C.Smith the Red Kenworth would make a good rollback project for what you need to work and be the length you want. The other trucks should make for interesting content for your channel along with the Red Kenworth. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Mr & Mrs J.C.Smith and Jeffrey.
I love the cab overs so I’d do the red k100
Kw big red. I would love that truck
Matching K100 cabovers for the win!
Can't wait to watch this build.
J.C. Smith project. The man with many projects, the name fits. Long time viewer here. i would love to see the F750, the IH 8600 or the dynahoe projects get done. I'm personally a fan of the F750, that's going to be a cool truck when done. If I had the room you have and a little bit of money, i probably would have just as many projects. Keep up the hard work, thanks for always bringing us along, see you on the next one.
the f750 is on the list for this year. i want it done and it will be sold. the 8600 is on the schedule as well.
@@j.c.smithprojects project overkill?
yes. that is what he is referring to.
The Red KW sounds like a plan. I like the interior.
I think ur on the right track. Red one as the rollback, like u said all the things it needs u wanna change so that makes perfect sense and the white one as a road tractor/ 5th wheel wrecker would make a sweet pair. Let’s just be real, who doesn’t love a coe?! Lol best suited and the ones that would turn the most heads. 100% man that’s gonna be sweet to follow these builds if that’s the route u go
The red cabover would look nice jc
Either truck you build is going to turn out awesome J.C 🙂👍 I really like the idea of a rollback *with* an under reach. That would be incredibly useful. I hope you find the lowboy trailer you're looking for. Take care 🔧🔩
I vote the “parts truck” cab over, toss in the driveline from that old L9000, and build it out, but it’s your money, I’ll watch either which way 😎
that is the n14 i was referring to.
@@j.c.smithprojects I figured that, remember you talking about that truck plenty, and when you pulled the tank off it
The cabover parts truck sounds like a great plan. I love the idea of putting a parts truck back on the road. Especially a cool cabover.
I would go with the parts truck , that interior would look really good with a little cleaning , but can’t believe how nice it is for it’s age, someone took good car of it at one time , old iron back on the road is a win
I love these builds. Take a whole lot of this and that with a lot of hard work and get you the rig they never built
Red KW gets my vote! Cant wait to see the progress!
Hello JC, Mrs JC and of course Jeff I'd enjoy seeing you use the red KW I'm sure you've figured it in the tanks will need to be smaller diameter to accommodate lower ground clearance either way it'll be a fantastic project to follow watching how meticulous you are making everything done right.
yes. i would need to go to the 22" tanks and move the step / grab handles as well.
I'm just not a cabover kind of guy. Have a friend who wanted me to build his old KW cabover, its from the fifties and so so condition... I just don't have my heart into them. So said, they have their place and make great rigs for several types of work.
im just happy to see you using a cabover my mom's was a pete cabover dont know the engine but she hauled dead head tanks to the yards all over the west coast in the 70's
Will be interesting to see your approach to doing this bed up the way you want it. The NRC 40TB Bed’s are the cats meow but damn they are expensive even used. If it’s a truck your wanting to build for the long haul with no intention of selling than I think either of the k100’s. (If it were me it’s going on a Peterbilt 359 or 379 chassis but I have a soft spot for them) One thing I would do myself is Chop the pylon off the bed and build a stationary onto the truck just for the extra few inches of useable room to be gained.
i considered making the headache rack a permanent mount with a short stationary bed for manipulating the load and its over hang but it doesnt work well with a cabover. it would be in the way to work on the truck. i had also considered a knuckle boom crane behind the cab. i would much rather put it on the pete but i need a sleeper and i just cant make the length work.26ft total (including the under reach) is as long as the bed could be, i need the 28 and really want 30 like my big best rollback.
I'm kinda in the park with a lot of the guys on this. The red parts truck seems logically the best choice . The frame needs stretching and it has issues so swap out . Cabs still good needs a bit of TLC and maybe a polish . Wheels and tyres as you say will be swapped out anyway on whichever . You have engine and transmission options with what else you have in storage same as spare axles and lift axle . I really don't think it worth using the other kw as it's a good truck as is . In a nutshell the work you need to do to put a truck together requires everything you need to change out on this one . Personally your choice is already the red kw it's the most suited . So I'm gonna be watching out for the rebuild .
Red cab over. Gotta swap out that passenger buck board seat for Mrs JC wham you do it!
yeah...i can only imagine her riding in a non air ride. we wouldnt be going very far or very often for sure.
Either cabover will be awesome!
Looking forward to this build.
G'day J.C.
Totally agree with your thinking on the parts Kenworth, there fast becoming a sought after rig too.
It's ideal for that kind of rebuild.
You would end up with one of the best looking tilt bed wreckers /tow units on the road .
I'd love to see the vids of that build .
Bring it on .
Respect ...!
Thank U 4 2day's video J.C. If it were me I would go w/ the Harvester, but you should use the truck U really want & make it happen. We all settle sometimes for whatever reason & the result is we are not happy w/ the build when it is all said & done.
I like the idea of the red cabover rollback
Definitely the KW parts truck .👍
Red KW for this project ❤ ..
White & red KW is better for road tractor.
I think you should do parts truck as the rollback. And the other Kenworth cabover should be your wrecker somehow.
I agree with you!
My favorite? The 379 !!! Hands down.
The one that fits your needs best? The red cabover.
I think you watch Casey Ladell. His NRC rollback/under reach is handy. Checks all your boxes off the list.
You can make that Jerr-Dan be just like that NRC, only better !!
Blast/2 coats of primer/2 coats of paint !!!
having an under reach on a rollback works so much better for me than a wrecker. i only need the wrecker for the under reach. i dont do recoveries.
I like the cab overs. The red truck would be cool. Out of curisoty, if you have to have some new frame rails made, what would the cost be, any guess? My only "cab-over" was a 1987 Toyota Van, and it was a blast to drive with a 88" wheelbase, working on the engine was a real PITA! How about using thicker, lower profile frame or drop frame to save the height
Can't wait to watch what you do it'll be interesting to watch. If there's a vote to help with your choice I would love to see one of the cabovers get used.
I vote for the IH. My back tells me we spent too many years in a cabover. I don't like the climbing to get in or the danger of falling out especially when it's icy.
if i was in the towing business and drove it most days, i would agree. i will use it a handful of times a month. i can deal with it for now. when it gets to be a problem climbing in and out of the cab, i will just have to build another one!
Hi J.C my thoughts are the same as yours the red one. I like cab overs and my favorite color is red.
Sounds good to me the red one
Definitely the parts kenworth
i saw on you tube a while back a flat bed that the under reach when pulled in didn't extend past the roll back bed wish i had saved it because i had never seen one
I would think the international or Pete would be the better choice for the project. I love the cabovers and hate to see them cut up. It will be interesting either way
i think it is going top be the red k100e
I just watched your video because i saw the title. I recently purchased a very old (1988) International cabover that i believe is a rebadged Nissan medium duty rollback with a JerrDan 26' Wrangler 2 bed. I think i got a very fair price. I was looking for a chassis to mount the bed on. I am tring to stay at 26k gvw. All the trucks i was finding were $55k to $70k for a used 250k+ mileage truck. Because i am in Kalifornia, we are dealing with the CARB compliance laws that i will not go into here. I have decided to find a gas truck. Just saying it makes me ill. I have owned several companies with hundreds of thousand dollars in equipment. No more. I am not feeding the system anymore. I hope to be in the finished truck for between $10-$15k. I'm tired of paying everyone else first and being left with crumbs at the end. I look forward to watching more of your videos. One thing i will say is that Kalifornia vehicles are like 18 year old virgins compared to the midwest or east coasts. I think it will take a couple of cases Sierra Neveda to get the images of the rust you have on that beds deleted from my memory. I wish you success with your build.
The red KW sleeper cab over with the longest rollback and a steer tag axle will mean you can travel with wifey, sleep and not pay for motel accommodation. Just let wifey decide on interior and colour, happy wife, happy life ❤🎉
Red k100 has my vote!
I’d do your plan of using the parts truck to make into your flat bed and then use the complete one to do like you said and turn into a 5th wheel wrecker/low boy hauler
So, at first I thought the white one; but, the red KW with a steerable tag axle makes a lot of sense.
I like the red one
Building that red one k100 would be cool to see. Lots of conventional cab trucks out there with roll backs on them but how many can overs do you see. Nice to have something one of a kind.
What's really sad is that I followed and understood every word he said. I need to get a third job...Those snub noses are sweet!
👍thanks for your hard work and sharing your build ideas 👍 🤔I would do a cab swap red kw on the international frame less building the frame and quicker to use the truck 🎉
i cant combine those two trucks. the blue truck is far too costly to do that with. add the cost of the red cabover and i am beyond what i want to have invested in the entire truck. it is more cost effective to use the red cabover by itself and make it what it needs to be.
I like the cab over ideal 2nd would be the Peterbilt
Hi jc fix the cabovers like you said at the end of the video rollback on the red an the other with a lowboy . Cheers mate 🇦🇺
I would buy a Landoll trailer with a winch. This will solve your height problems and you can pull with multiple trucks.
If you need to pull a truck out of a tight place buy a small dozer to bring with you on the trailer.
doesnt work for what i want to do. it make the rig even longer and much heavier. i go on a lot of residential roads when i am going to buy a truck from someone.
Save the parts truck make a friend like you said makes sense!
Question: Couldn't those wheel wells be retained and used for chain and tie down storage or even extra tools for when you're on the road? Just an idea. As for my pick, I'd go with the Kenworth "parts truck" as it would make more sense in the long run. Like you said, everything you're going to have to do will be the same things you'd need to do to make that Kenworth roadworthy again. A win/win situation, it seems.
Im a fan of the 1989.
Red cab over would be nice 👍
The red K100 for sure
K100 would look awesome
I vote K100. Cut the frame, stretch it, throw the AirGlide in the trash, lo-leaf it and run a 295/60/22.5 tire on it. Continental tires on the front. 18 ply, 7385 lbs each, 75mph speed rating and if they blow on a street axle they don't explode and cause body damage.
i want to order new thicker frame rails at the right length. would like to use those 315 tires i have on aluminum wheels.
