- More Ozark: • Ozark
The Byrdes and their teenage kids, Charlotte and Jonah, are, for all intents and purposes, an ordinary family with ordinary lives. Except for the job of Marty, a Chicago financial advisor who also serves as the top money launderer for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico. When things go awry, Marty must uproot his family from the skyscrapers of Chicago and relocate to the lazy lake region of the Missouri Ozarks.

Best sales pitch ever.
More shoreline than the entire coast of California.....
When he said "we just wash the money, that's what matters". I felt that.
Notice the beginning of the show he couldn't close the first sales pitch
"I got this brochure", " i gotta go" bruh XD
@@johnnyantone9787 no I think del knew he was lieing, remember when he was like when you lie you can't stop talking. Del understands how truly talented Marty is and doesn't want to waist him for his dumb as friend.
Marty reminds me so much of Saul Goodman. Just being able to talk his way out of anything. His voice is his weapon.
*YES!* Or Michael Shannon's character Nelson Van Alden in The Boardwalk Empire!
He actually reminds me of walter white. Very cerebral and calculated. I find myself rooting for Marty the way I rooted for Walter. I dont give a fuck if walter was evil, the way he outsmarted his enemies was boss.
Edwin Pena I actually felt like Wendy was the Walter White in this show. When I saw her power-hungry eyes at the end of season 2, I had that “AHA” moment and made the connection between the two.
He’s better
Or Lester Nygaard
I like how Del knows the pitch is probably bullshit, but it's intriguing just enough for him to spare Marty.
I agree, I don’t think he ever really intended to kill Marty but he wanted to drive that message deep if he fucks up one more time well his entire family probably will all fit in one barrel type of messshe
@@DonaldMcNuGGeT nah I feel like he was really about to kill Marty tbh
He knows he can always kill him later. Let's put him on a short leash and see what he can do.
He got the tell on Marty that he wasn't a part of it, right after he shot Bruce. Everyone else was begging for their life and looking for a second chance but Marty was thinking about his kids first (so it tells him that he wasn't going to risk the livelihood of his family for some extra cash). Regardless, given how hot things were in Chicago, my guess is he was going to stop laundering through Chicago anyway and look for a new hub, after fishing to see if these guys did steal any money. Low and behold he was right, and now he can tie up all of the loose ends and move elsewhere. He only spares Marty because, Marty got the **tell on Del!** Marty already guessed that he was fishing, heard in Bruce's admittance that Del didn't know the full details (how much), and given that he was listing that all these agencies are knocking on his doorstep, he gave him the perfect out. Send the best money launderer he's ever met, to a location free from all those agencies.
Suffice it to say that Del would have killed Marty anyway, it's the fact that Marty spoke Del's worries away that gave him a chance at survival.
I also love how it wasn't just Marty saying over and over again how he had nothing to do with it, he was smart enough to see that that didn't matter at that point
Del definitely admires how Marty just casually stood up after facing death
El_Piter33 Objective: SURVIVE
Only Marty Byrde
@@lonewanderer1328 OBJECTIVE : Achieved
Got nothing to lose when you face death.
He put him back in his knees though lol
The way Del just Casually telling Marty "I Gotta Go" while the man is literally making a saving grace to save his and is family's life is low key Hysterical
I would have been like, “No worries, I understand” then get shot in the head.
Del was the best antagonist
It's really one of the greatest lines EVER. Basically business goes on with or WITHOUT YOU!
It's like Marty is pitching him a movie about a book he wrote
….and Marty’s co-workers…well..ex-cowokers, being hauled away at the end in oil drums 😳
Ozark episode 1 may be one of the best pilot episodes of all time. It's substantially better than many movies I've seen. All three seasons of this show are excellent - particularly the third.
yeap. i was hooked the first episode
Second season sucked
@@bentooley Yeah. I agree, I stopped watching somewhere in the 2nd season when the plotlines got so ridiculous they kept raising the stakes and ramping up the tension until nothing means anything anymore.
@Jasper102211 - No doubt. I finished the first episode at midnight and had to watch two more despite having a work meeting that started at 7 am the next day.
Then you obviously haven't seen the new Full House yet
Del didn’t want to kill him, he was looking for a reason to spare him. That’s why he hesitated and took his time.
That’s why Marty was last too
No one could launder money like Marty. When Del approached every accounting firm, he was the only one to point out that they were forged.
Exactly. He wasn't going to kill him.
Del always knew Marty was innocent. You can tell from the beginning of him interpreting Marty’s reaction to his accusations he realizes he’s innocent
@@gregmax1321 he knew he was innocent, but he still had to kill him, because Marty had vouched for Bruce in the beginning, despite Del asking for Marty alone.
I like coming back to this scene for 2 reasons:
1) Shows how the main characters ended up in Ozarks in the first place.
2) Shows just how sharp and quick witted Marty is when under immense pressure. His survival mentality and instincts help him achieve his goals time and time again throughout the series. This was the first time we see it in action.
Exactly..good writing..other shows just throw in the main characters w/o any proper explanation as towhy they are the main characters n expect us to just digest it
Also Del is just killing it
The best part about this scene too, is that at this point in the episode, Marty was already established as well respected for how good he is at what he does for the cartel based on the flashback episode. That's why it made literal sense for Del to spare Marty and see what he could do.
The actor who played Del should’ve played Navarro...
CJ Israel yes he’s more sinister.
yes navarro is a bit shit in comparison
WingsOf Redemption na. The guy who played Navarro was good
@@brianb7423 he is good but i prefer del
Nah
Love how Del listened to him up until he began repeating himself.
We never saw Marty this emotional again. Its pure survival in adapting to a wolfs game, and both him, wendy and the kids grew teflon skin over time, becoming numb to all the death, and loss of humanity.
Not exactly true. Marty only gets emotional after extremely traumatic situations, such as getting his fingernails cut off or killing mason in self defense
*People think the Brydes are villains sooooooo bad, it’s annoying. The whole family is scared, and terrified doing what they can to survive. They not out, they trapped, yeah they getting money. But by the end. Shit man….things escalated and they feel and deal with every bit of it.*
@@TheCoolComplexity idk man not with Wendy she seems like an actual villain
@@TheCoolComplexity You know what's ACTUALLY annoying? People running their mouths about shit they clearly don't know the first thing about. Maybe go and watch the actual show, instead of trying to piece it together with CZcams Clips. Wendy was "doing what she had to do to survive"? Gtfoh

This scene really sold me on the show. I've never seen Jason Bateman in anything memorable, but seeing this episode kept me at the edge of my seat. His acting abilities are so amazing, along with all of the cast of Ozark- all so geniune and real feeling characters. I had like a heartattack when Del put him back on the ground after listening to his speech and I can't remember any show (maybe aside from Breaking Bad) that can induce such anxiety. This show is definitely golden for sure.
All except season 3 were great. I have no idea what happened to the writing staff in season 3. All I know is if you cheat in a casino, and walk up to the casino owners, on the casino floor, and tell them you’re cheating, while you’re cheating, while at the same time your casino is full of feds, it’s not going to work out well for you.
The slot machine cheating scene in season 3 may be perhaps the most retarded scene I’ve watched in a legit good show. As someone who has worked in multiple casinos, if you ever tried to pull off what Wendy does in any casino in the United States, you’d be in handcuffs so fast it’d make your head spin.
Here’s a great idea, I’m going to cheat in a casino, and tell the owners I’m cheating. What could possibly go wrong? Oh, did I mention feds are sniffing around my casino whilst I do this stupid 💩? Ozark season 3, how dumb can you get?

Killing off Del so that the Schnells (who are far less interesting characters and poorly written) could be more prominent was a mistake. Del had so much potential.
I agree the snells lost their edge so quick. I could t believe they killed del like that. That part was awesome and surprising but after it isn’t until Javi where you actually see someone comparable
I think he had to go film the mission impossible movie
@@throwaway6405 It's interesting you say that because you could argue the Snells lost their edge BY killing Del
I really want marty’s skills to negotiate his way literally out of every tight situation in this show. He never takes no for an answer it’s fascinating.
It comes naturally if you are competent on what you do. Marty being a great money launderer.
That was happens when you are in a situation where the only answer you need to hear is yes.
Also it has to come with his poker face. I feel like it's really what sells it too, hes always expressionless in all these distressing situation. I mean the cartel always know they're hes scared for his life when hes suggesting new ideas and all, but his pocket face really sells that hes committed to the idea and will make it work.
that's not a real life skill. He can talk his way out of every situation because thats how the show is written. the script says: and then the villan changed his mind in the last second. irl you can be a smart talker but that gives you less influence then these shows suggest.
@@TheBlueLawliet thanks for stating it Captain Obvious.
This scene makes a LOT more sense when you see the flashback episode. Del held Marty in very high regards and knew how important of an asset Marty was. Also from day one Del told Marty leave Bruce out but Marty insisted they bring Bruce onboard.
Exactly. Del was after Marty but was initially rebuffed. Marty eventually joined the money laundering enterprise so Del got what he wanted so badly. Del saw through Bruce as a BS artist and fast talker but with Marty he knew he could “deliver the goods” and was willing to “roll the dice” on the Ozark venture.
Bruce was already in it and recommended Marty. Del liked Marty because Marty had the balls to tell them somebody was stealing from them which del already knew. I don’t think either of them knew it was Bruce at the time though
@@tolkienblack at that time it wasn't Bruce, it was the old accountant and he cut out his eyeballs infront of Marty
For Marty to be so logical under THIS amount of pressure, the determination to stay alive, to make it work against the odds, I think it's clear Del was impressed. When shit hits the fan, you want a Marty Byrde to be on your side to help you out of it.

Indra Deus “Innocence proves nothing.” From Del’s eyes, Marty was around these ppl long enough to, if he was competent enough, to see if they were taking money or doing things correctly. Marty didn’t notice? He’s guilty for incompetence.
Indra Deus I saw it more as a “take no risk” approach. Say he lets Marty off after killing his partners...what next? A spooked Marty will run straight into the arms of the FBI ,witness protection etc. so why the headache? Money laundering and drug trafficking are not exactly domains where the bosses rely on the goodwill of their employees.
Lone Wanderer that’s how the cartel thinks most likely. People are another level of psychopath
But I got a brochure

I like it.
Marty doesn’t just talk. He invents things of high value under pressure. The whole Ozarks laundering scheme became real in a short time.
"Works well under pressure" should be on his resume lol
I feel so bad for Marty. The whole starts off with his wife cheating on him, then him about to be executed because his partner was stealing and was about to turn him into the feds, then he has to payback all the money his partner stole to not get murdered.
Lolz. When u read all of it, its comical.
The show’s just great man
And honestly with how the new seasons are going (spoiler btw if you haven’t watched) you’d see that if everyone who had just initially listened to Marty or his warnings would still be alive. He’s a really great character who tries to do his best.
You shouldn't feel bad for Marty. He CHOSE to launder money for an illegal drug cartel that commits mass murder. Choices have consequences.

@@stevenl4727 been a long time since i watched but i remember the two FBI agents clearing out the bugs from the offices marty and Bruce were trying to buy. I’m pretty sure Bruce was an informant while also skimming money from the cartel lmao. Dude had a death wish
Del always had respect for Marty. Also knew that no one could wash money like him. Not sure if this was a test or more like Marty using his wits. Maybe both - but damnit I love this show ❤️
Donovan Whitney I really think it was both ... but before this scene he knew Marty was innocent but Marty really is the goat at washing money
monokhem he would not have switched
It was definitely a test. That's why he saved Marty for last. Why would del give Marty a speech about the cartel being under pressure? Why would del slowly walk up to him and ask him if the kids would be home? lol the cartel doesn't give a damn about that. It was designed pressure because the cartel was in trouble.
@monokhem Do you know what a Cartel is, genius? Like I said A cartel don't give a flying fuck about shit like that. The whole scene was designed to pressure Marty because their organization was in trouble. Just because you're too slow to follow my logic doesn't mean it's bad.
@monokhem Yes. I'm sure he does. His record is spotless because they dont leave witnesses. He asked Marty that question to fuck with his head letting him know that he wasn't going to only kill him, but wendy too to make him think harder. You are obviously a kid and don't understand shit.
Had to come back after season 3 to watch how they got there....

I wish Del was Navarro.
Xolani Nhlapo For me, I like Navarro 10x more than I like Del
George Plunkitt i think jorge mendoza would’ve fit the role of drug lord more lmao, little guy with the evil eyes
Ditto.
Terrific acting by person that plays Del. He even acts with his eyes without saying a word. Watch his eyes as he's mulling over Marty's plan and he eyes tell it all.
I remember him being Sean Penn’s nemesis in Bad Boys back in the 80s.
I wouldn't be surprised if he keeps this attitude and tone for the next Mission Impossible sequels he's in.
I agree. He's not doing a whole lot, and that is what makes it believable. His eyes are telling a story.

early on in the first episode, Marty and Wendy talk about the trampoline in a pretty boring way, then, right before he think he'll die, he relives the happiest memory of his life, and it is the kids playing with the same trampoline. This scene always makes me drop a tear and it's bc of all the details, it's just absolutely powerful.
Bateman definitely deserves at least a couple of Emmys for his performances on this show. They’re epic.

Haha same
Same here at 3am, my time 😂
Marty thought he was going to die and what flashes before his eyes 👀 is his family
That’s who he always cares about the #family
lovelyzzz 05 I both agree and disagree with that statement. I disagree in that Walt does love his family, but I agree that he loved one thing more: the power and rush that came from making drugs.
Marty, on the other hand, has no interest in power. He just wants to keep his family and himself alive.
kerpal3 thanks hector lol
@Ruth Zamorano But that's why I actually like Walt. While everyone always has family as a crutch, an excuse to not break bad, Walt actually embraces his true self as Heisenberg all along. His admission that he was doing it for himself was both a cathartic moment and the one time he was truly honest with himself. Family is important sure. I just feel it's overplayed a lot of the times and not enough was being honest like Walt was.
Looking back at this scene years later I realize now that Del never believed Marty's plan about the Ozarks. What saved Marty was that he didn't knowingly steal and also he was the brains behind the whole laundering operation. Because of that Del believed that Marty was still valuable to him and decided to spare him. The question is whether Marty would still have been killed later on after his usefulness expired. By this point Marty has seen WAY TOO MUCH and knows too much to be trusted indefinitely.
Facts!!!!..del could trust marty from the jump and ofcourse he didnt steal from the cartel...that was really why he survived ...plus his brains were a plus👍
The fascinating thing is that this is what happened with the Ozark series itself. Jason managed to convince people to invest in his idea, and five years later, it's the most popular series in Netflix and made millions I'm sure
That is a great take!
Del's such a kidder. Can't believe the look on Marty's face once he figures out Del's just having fun with him, breakin' balls.
The music playing when Marty sees his kids jumping on the trampoline, reminds me of terminator 2 when Sara has the nuke dream. Absolutely terrifying. This has to be the best pilot episode I’ve seen since the Sopranos.
i like how Del _slowly_ raises his gun up. Like he's actually kinda curious as to what Marty is going to come up with.

I’m sorry but this show isn’t even in the same ballpark as Breaking Bad. Hell it’s not even the same sport.
The Dark Knight true, breaking bad is trash compared to Ozark
The Dark Knight never said it was. But the premise of a profesional with flexible moral that keeps him and family from sudden death using his genius knowledge has to remind you of braking bad

Killing Del was the biggest mistake of the show.
Del certainly hated talkers who could never shut up like Marty’s partner Bruce. He never would have said “rednecks” out loud before the wrong people as the only thing that really mattered was B U S I N E S S. Navarro approved the deal and Del would have acted accordingly no matter what he really thought.
I think Marty standing up to tell the story convinced Del more than the story. His voice and body language alone is convincing.
This is one of the best shows ever
It’s creepy when you realize it’s his friends that were in the bed of the truck that just drove off.

I love dels character, most of the problems spout from money in this show. Del cares about his money but for him to give 8 million to marty to re wash shows he knows Marty's potential and wanted to test his trust.
How Marty was selling the idea of the Ozarks to Del is literally how one should look at success and maintaining it 24/7💎

@@robertcunningham2624 What I was trying to say is that back in Chicago Marty thought he could do it with no risk and danger to his family, but after this happened and they were sent to the Ozarks, he saw the consequences of messing with the cartel with his own eyes and his only way to survive and protect his family is to continue laundering money for the cartel.

About a year ago I started the first episode and for some reason couldn't watch more than the first 5 minutes. Eventually I revisited the series and I'm glad I did because I binged right through all three seasons in a week. If you were wary about a Jason Bateman led drama, don't be.
