    I'm a big fan of the izula too, been carrying one since around 2014. I use it as my farm utility knife from cutting bailing twine to butchering chickens and goats. Even my main knife for hiking and camping. Never bothered getting scales or doing paracord wrap as its plenty comfortable with my calloused hands. I might try the s35vn version at some point, but I love esees 1095. Whenever someone asks me what knife they should get my answer always starts with the izula.

    You are an expert just due to the fact of how often you dress down game in the field, it makes sense that the way that knife design let's your dominant finger choke up on the choil edge to get the increment leverage on that blade for tedious tasks, the designer was right there in the "skin in the game" literally lol knew what was right in the design because you found that same usefulness as a kindred hunter. True proven application for a man in the bush instead of gimmicky blade design when they produced this knife. Appreciate your forthcoming knowledge in this video, you know your schitt.

    ESEE since 2014 has made the Izula in s35vn and it cost
    $77.00.
    FYI. buy the ESEE Izula in s35vn not the White River.
    The Izula's spine way thicker and way stronger than any White River knife made @ 0.16!!!
    Also ESEE has a no questions asked lifetime warranty,....White Rive does not!!!
    Izula is three times the knife of anything currently manufactured by White River.

  • @Deibodese
    @Deibodese Před 3 lety +5

    I’ve heard several rave reviews about the White River Caper and Backpacker, but I’ve never seen any videos demonstrating how much hard use it can take. The Izula is legendary, in my book, for being able to take an extraordinary amount of abuse, especially for its size. However, I’ve heard that S30V is quite brittle in comparison, hence my question.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  Před 3 lety +6

      The izula is 1095 and is softer and more flexible so it can handle the abuse. But at the cost of edge retention (however, esee heat treat is amazing and resharpens so fast). S30v is harder and there for can chip and break and is not really designed for very hard use. But s30v holds an edge longer and also takes longer to sharpen. So it depends on your use. If you are gonna use the knife for normal knife stuff the s30 is gonna work great. If you are going to beat the knife and rely on it for hard use s30v is probably not the steel you want.

    • @Deibodese

      Usually it's pretty chippy and brittle on most knives,.......however on an ESEE their heat treating is second to none.
      As well I've done my research and if you buy an ESEE Izula in s30vn you'll need not worry. .....I've seen their tests.
      I actually own the ESEE in s30vn and it's really tough .....plus we all know the waranty ESEE has!!!
      That said I would not trust White River or ANY other knife maker other than ESEE to build a tough use s30vn knife,......PERIOD🗡🗡🗡🗡

  • @GLOCKCOPG23
    @GLOCKCOPG23 Před 6 lety +4

    The Kabar Escabar (BK14) has the same handle, 1/2" bigger blade, and better alloy steel with chromium/vanadium added for higher edge retention and edge toughness. On top of that, the BK14 is about $10-15 cheaper. It's a no brainer. BK14 for the win. YMMV.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  Před 6 lety +2

      GLOCKCOPG23 I have a few of the eskabars nice knife! Nowhere near an izula though. Sorry. Still a great knife for the money. But cheap coating no chinking poor edge retention and not as good of a blade shape. Good knife but not an izula

    • @GLOCKCOPG23
      @GLOCKCOPG23 Před 6 lety +7

      tbwpodcast I too have both knives and my experience differs from your's. Both my Kabar BK11 and BK14 have better edge retention than both of my Izuala. Not a whole lot but enough for me to notice. On all four, my edges are set at 25 degrees which is about optimal for this blade thickness and steel composition. I agree about the coating but the darn coating on both the Izula and the BK11/14 needs to be chemically removed any way for a drag free slice through tougher media. In my experience the Izula is a really nice knife but it cost more than it should. I mean, come on, $60 or so for plain Jane 1095? Esee does have a really good heat treat for pedestrian 1095 but the added components of the BK11/14 steel and a similar heat treat let it pull ahead. Again, not by much but still ahead. Like I pointed out before, when you figure in cost and performance, the BK11/14 simply gives more of what a knife is supposed to do.....Cut stuff and hold an edge. We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I suppose it's much like the old Glock vs Sig debate.....That gets ridiculous. Lol. Good luck this hunting season and be safe out there.

    I dunno. I am tempted by the Izula or the BK versions. Light weight. Easily cleaned. Good blade. Tough design. The problem is the handle. It's hard to see paying quite a bit for a tool with a bad handle. The handle isn't ergonomic. It looks tiring to use.
