    Steel Type
    1095
    Stones Used
    Nubatama Ume 1000 grit
    Nubatama Ume 2000 grit
    Dlt XL leather strop with white compound
    Bess 'C' score based on 3 cut tests average - 144g
    Edge angle measured around 20º per side, 40º inclusive. This is a difficult one to read, however, as the nature of my sharpening this steel, seriously convexed the bevels. In any case, between that, and measuring the bevels, plugging that info into a triangle calculator; this is the best I can ascertain.

      He's really not. This is so bad it's laughable. I have a few ESEE's and it's incredibly easy to be a shaving edge on it in 20% of the time he did. He seems to be having trouble with a very easy steel to work with.

      If you say so :p
      I'm not a big fan of it. Most never heat treat it properly, so it gets gummy. Forming a truly crisp apex, along with burr removal, can be a real pain in the ass.
      Convexing em usually has amazing results. I will say for outdoor use, it's a hard steel to beat.

    I have a Smiths Tri Hone sharpening set up but can’t seem to get a razors edge on my Izula 2. I’m guessing it’s me/operator error but any ideas/tips would be great. I started with the coarse stone and proceeded to medium then fine but just can’t get the blade sharp enough to shave hair.

    Hey I’m just starting out practicing hand sharpening on whetstones. How many knives until you got consistent holding your angle? Would you say knives or just time like a few months ?

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 2 lety +2

      It's just time and practice. Holding the angle isn't as important as you may think. Watch my video on 'how to hold consistency' to understand. Regardless, as you practice and get better, it just happens. You may not even be conscience when it occurs, but it will happen, and things will just click for you.
      Even after this happened, for me, I still had days, where things fell apart, and I just couldn't get it. There is no substitute, for experience, unfortunately. So grab some knives, sot aside some time, and just go at it.

    One question wouldn't a 800 to 1000 Grit be good for a working Edge?

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 11 měsíci

      Absolutely

  • @paulbrown6338
    @paulbrown6338 Před rokem +1

    Once you get to that point can the knife be maintained by just stropping?

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před rokem

      As long as the edge doesnt take damage. Chips, and dings, require grinding, to fix. If you just roll the edge, or dull it through use, then a strop is a fantastic way to keep it sharp. There are diminishing returns however. After stropping over and over, the apex will eventually start to fatten up. It will again require stones, to reset

    I can never get the angle right I would love to learn how👍🏼

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 8 měsíci

      Sharpie can help. Do you know this trick? Take a sharpie marker, color the bevel, then make your pass across the stone. The goal is to remove the marker entirely; that is your angle. You can do this as many times as needed, to dial in, where to hold the angle. Freehand is not exact, so you won’t hit it properly every single time, but it helps you figure out, where to hold.
