  • In this video we build super fast external storage that you can use for your M1 and M2 MaBook or 24" iMac Computers. Using the GiGimundo 40 Gbps external enclosure (Model AJM40C), and a M.2 NVME SSD, we show you how to build external storage that is just as fast as the MacBook or iMac computers internal storage. You can edit videos off this external storage it's so fast.
    This external SSD storage can be used on both Mac and Windows PCs and allows you to transfer large files in seconds due to the speed of the external storage approaching 2,800 MB/s. This is one of the fastest external storage setups that you can build, and all for less then $150 at the time of this video.

      I didn't test it with that but I'm guessing the speed might be a little slower since it's a different port then on the M1 MacBook Air. I would look at the amazon page and search the comments and they should provide more info there on what speeds to expect.

    Thanks for doing this review - just bought the hard disk and case - really please with speed test results. My old SSD in a docking station is about 10x slower than the Mac mini M1 onboard hard drive - but this unit is roughly the same speed as the onboard drive so very happy. What I would like to do is connect the drive into some sort of USB-C hub, connected to a MacBook Air laptop - I have got a couple of the USB-C hubs with hdmi etc on them - but the drive doesn't seem to work in the usb-c connection - which I guess is for power. So what I think I need is some sort of USB-C hub that provides a few fast USB-Cs

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes, you would need a Thunderbolt 4 hub unfortunately and those are expensive too. Any other hub will severely slow down the external SSD.

    • @aelaan12
      @aelaan12 Před 10 měsíci +1

      If you can spring for the 1Tb - but you do not need to. Tip - you do not need to put in a PCIe Gen 4 because you will not reach over 40 Gbps (theoretical) which is the maximum speed of USB4. You need to make sure to use their cable, or a certified cable. While in theory, a Thunderbolt 3 cable can also reach 40Gbps, it will never get to that. We also need to look at the controller on the NVMe card. I would think to get a PCIe 3.0 with around, 3500Mbps read and write would more than suffice. Who would have ever thought these kinds of speeds are coming to consumer gear.... wonderful times we live in.

      I'm not sure I understand the questions but yes this is a great way to expand storage. If you are going to spend the money on this (40 Gbps) - which can get speeds aroudn 2,800 MB/s then I would go with a larger drive like 1 or 2 TB. If you just get a 10 Gbps enclosure (speeds up to about 1,000 MB/s in the real world) then those are much cheaper and you can get any size drive. Thanks.

      Usually you will get transfer speeds around 900mb/s … plus minus 50/100mb. That’s normal for a USB3.2(1) connection.
      PS: Don’t confuse it with the x2 variant, which supports 20gb/s theoretically.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 10 měsíci +1

      No. You can only get about 900 to 1000 MB/s with 10 Gbps enclosure. Bits and bytes conversion with overhead. So that is all you can get.

  • @WineWorldTV
    @WineWorldTV Před 10 měsíci +1

    The theoretical maximum for data transfer (files) is 32 Gb/s which is 4000 MB/s. 8 Gb/s on Thunderbolt 4 is reserved for video data. Realistically, 2800 MB/s (~22 Gb/s) is the max you'll get for just about all of these. You might get a little bit higher, but that's not typical. It's not technically deceptive how these are advertised since TB 4 (and 3 actually) have a max data rate of 40 Gb/s (5000 MB/s), but you're never going to get that speed no matter what kind of SSD you install.

    • @alex_es
      @alex_es Před 10 měsíci

      Craig doesn’t even go into these details. He did not mention whether this is even a Thunderbolt enclosure. Dan Charlton made me aware that for the 7000 series Titan ridge, the bandwidth reservation for DP/USB has been revised to leave more room for PCIe. It seems to be 24 Gbps rather than 22.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I have talked about this many times and don't want to in every video. 40 Gbps means you need to divide by 8 (bytes to bits etc.) and then you get 5,000 MB/s but yes the lines use part of this for video transmission and other items so the most you can get is around 3,000 MB/s. I think I talked about that at least 8 times in past videos and I don't go over that in each video or people would never watch.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 10 měsíci

      Yes, I have covered this in many videos before. So most of my subs know this and I don't rehash it in every video. Yes a 40 Gbps has a max rate of around 5,000 but then there is overhead on the line like video transmission. So around 3,000 or even 3,200 is about as high as it can get. With a 10 Gbps - divide by 8 and you get 1,250 MB/s but with overhead maybe about 1,000 MB/s is the best you will see. In the video I'm just doing a quick product showcase and won't cover all the technical aspects of that is Thunderbolt vs usb-c etc.
