Great video Kyle! Very informative. Never really thought of external SSDs in so much detail. I'd usually just buy the first sandisk drive that popped up on Amazon search results page.
And I 'paid the price' for doing so (both in the literal and metaphorical sense), since my Sandisk Extreme SSD failed soon after purchase. Thankfully, it was still under warranty so I could get a free replacement...
Keep up the great videos (which are both entertaining AND, crucially, informative)

Hyper shop had a sale a couple weeks ago so I purchased a HyperDrive Next USB4 SSD Enclosure for $89, paired it with a Western Digital Black SN850X 2TB for another $99.99. Using Mac Studio M2 Max speeds reaching over 3000 mbps read/write speeds. Gets a little warm as you would expect but really happy with it.

Used your advice from the first video to set up a 2TB Acasis ext. enclosure for my M2 Mac Studio. REALLY like it. However, the enclosure gets hot easily (should put a laser thermometer on there to check...) but I haven't experienced any actual problems resulting from high heat. It's just a little worrying. For others doing this, I'd recommend finding a little USB-powered case fan or something to cool the enclosure during heavy use.

Great info! Thanks man!!! Just spend several hours resolving an issue with my wife's external hard drive. The disk was formatted as NTFS (File System for WINDOWS) and stopped working on her MAC. A recent MAC firmware update caused the 3rd party software (ie PARAGON (MacOS Sonoma Compatible)) to stop working. She had been using this external drive for a few years now. Finally, got everything working again by 'purchasing' the license for 'Paragon' software (Microsoft NTFS for MAC by Paragon Software) for $30.00. Hours of troubleshooting to figure out what was going on. Bottom line, I'm looking for a new SSD for her MAC so we don't run into this problem again. Great info...thank you again!

Hi from France, I loved your video , thanks for the recherche and clarity. One area that I don't understand is back-ups. I'm a real fan of keeping several backups of my data, both on-site and off-site. I use both external drives and cloud storage. If I use the type of external drives that you suggest, how can I get this loaded to iCloud and /or Google Cloud ? Second question relates to Final Cut Pro which loads links from the drive and not the full imports, how to I keep this feed from an external drive ?. Please keep you videos coming, they're super instructive.

I have found an old SSD from 2013 at home though, which I would also like to integrate into my setup as it still was brand-new (Transcend esd200). This is my very first Mac, as I have only used pc's in the past. I am using a Crucial 4.0 NVMe M2 2TB ssd with an ACASIS enclosure for added memory. The external drive is formatted APFS. Write speed is running at 1689 and read speed is 2616 according to Black Magic app. I have the Prime Video app downloaded to the external drive and it functions great. The issue is, when I download my purchased movies, they are being saved to my internal ssd as I can see my used space going up fast on it and my external drive is staying the same. Is there a setting I'm missing to make the app safe the movies to the external drive, or is this just not possible to do?

Hi Kyle! Fresh new subscriber here, just found your channel. Love, that you provide compressed info from someone who seems to know what he's talking about. ;-) Don't know, if you read this, but I'll give it a try:
    ----
After almost 15 (!) years on my early 2009 iMac I finally upgraded to a mid tier 2023 M3 iMac and I'm just loving it. Now the kicker: I just learned from you, that deterogating SSDs can be a problem, which came as a small shocker, as I try to get out as many years out of my 2.400 Euro machine.
Prior to my new SSD knowledge, I already bought one of the shiny minisopuru USB hub-stands and equipped it with an WD SN850X 2 TB SSD. My initial plan for this and current setup is, that I use a partion of it as a time machine volume, to automatically backup my internal Mac 512 GB SSD.
Do you have suggestions on how to use this setup or add another SSD to reduce wear and tear of the internal one? Anyhow: Happy new year and keep 'em coming! ;-)

Over all it works very very well and I am very happy. The main issue is that Apple Time Machine does not back it up. Apple's support said that Time Machine is not supported on external drives, even though I was able to do it on other drives in the past.

Great video! I have a couple of Samsung T7. Is there a way to delete/clean the purgeable space that appears under General / Available (below Capacity) to increase the real space available on the external SSD drives? Thanks!

Hey Kyle, love your channel I found it after purchasing my Max Studio and I had a question about Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD. Can I go with the 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD with the ZikeDrive USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure Z666 or does that get too hot and i have to get the 1TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD? Im new to all this technology so sorry if this is a dumb question. Which enclosure did you like for yourself between ZikeDrive and HyperDrive Next . I dont know which one to get.

Fantastic & Informative video. Question....Will these enclosures and Samsung 980 or WD770 SSD's work with an 27" iMac 2017 Intel that is dying and I want to get my data off of it soon - like this week. I will probably buy an iMac 24" M3 or maybe MAC Studio M3 if it comes out this summer (and the price is not too bad). In the meantime, I will use my 2017 iMac Pro as my my everyday computer until I do. Thanks, Charlie in Central Ohio - Mac user since 1986 (VisComm major at Ohio University)

Can you install the operating system on an eternal SSD and will it run efficiently. I am thinking of getting an M2 Mac mini and want to add the external drive to it.

This was a brilliant review, thanks. Could someone recommend the best case and SSD for a 4TB option please? I can see currently an off the shelf SanDisk for instance is approx £214 whilst the separate components come out at least £100 more but the speeds are obviously much higher. Thanks

Thanks for that info! I do have a question. I have 2 T9 samsung external drive and one of them gets warmer than the other. Does that mean the drive may not last? Thanks

Aloha I was wondering What do you think is a good 32 inch monitor for normal everyday content from youtube to watching movies, minor photo editing. I'm looking to have a 32inch monitor and a 27 inch monitor in portrait mode. I have a Mac Mini 2018 Intel. Would be interested what you think.

Thanks, Kyle ... very informative. Does anyone know of an SSD enclosure (Thunderbolt 4) that has a lock on the enclosure lid, and can be attached to a Keystone lock? I need to use one in a fairly public area at a business, and don't want it to grow legs and walk off. Thanks for any recommendations.

For the Zike device, do you have a recommendation for 4tb to 8tb ssd that I could use to back up my laptop and use for Time Machine?
