- Learn how to build crazy fast external storage for your M2 and M1 MacBooks in this video. Using the Minisopuru 40 Gbps M.2 NVMe external enclosure, and a WD Black SN770 M.2 NVME SSD, we build external storage that is approaching 2,800 MB/s. This external storage is faster than the internal storage on the base M2 MacBook Airs. We also perform testing on how fast it can transfer 100 GB in files.
The Minisopuru enclosure (Model: ME808M-40Gbps) can be used on any M1 and M2 Mac computer including modern iMacs, MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, Mac Studios, and even the M2 Mac mini. See how we built ultra fast external storage for your Mac. This enclosure will also work for Windows PCs as well (with proper SSD formatting) even though we tested it on a Mac.
In this video we discuss the following parts (first two used in video):
Minisopuru 40 Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure - amzn.to/3RYLZUN
WD Black SN770 M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB - amzn.to/3FAqRNz
WD Black SN770 M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB - amzn.to/48TTRNG
Other Recommended Drives:
Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD 1 TB - amzn.to/3ttYVYF
Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD 2 TB - amzn.to/3PTGCnd
WD Black SN850 NVMe SSD 1 TB - amzn.to/3PPtKyy
WD Black SN850 NVMe SSD 2 TB - amzn.to/46uNfDB

Those are very impressive speeds on that device, even with the overhead losses. Thanks for the information.
Not bad and doesn't seem to overheat or slow down when transferring large transfers which is the key.
Craig Neidel , ThanksMuch for sharing !
Thank you.
I just got one and YES they are on sale
Yes, if you can get on sale they are pretty good deals.
Where does the thermal tape go on exactly? Is it top and bottom or just the top. Love your channel!!
On the top and then the thermal pad should touch the case.
Thx for the video Craig
wondering if i would get the same results with an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) 128gb RAM 3,8 GHz Intel Core i7
I think it's thunderbolt 3 vs 4 which could make a difference here. I would check the comments on Amazon as somebody could have ran that test. I don't have a 2020 to test on.
Use the Blackmagic Video Speed Test you can set up larger files for testing.
Yes, for sure.
can you make a comparison with acasis case and large files (above 100 GB )?
It's the third video so I really can't make another one. It will all come down to how you cool the SSD and the SSD you use. It should be very close to this one in speeds but if I get time to do a test I'll let you know.
Quick question please, how can you copy and verify afterwards to make sure there is data integrity ? Thank you.
I'm sure you would need to pick up some software that can do that. Use something like time machine etc.
how could we see the transfer speed like in windows ? i mean not only the process line and the remaining time but the MB/S too ?
any idea ?
I'm more of a mac channel so not 100% sure. I think something like CrystalDiskMark is a good product for Windows.
I wonder, if i buy an NVME WITH a heatsink on and leave the top of the case open. Would that be good for the thermals?
Yes, leaving it open can sometimes help for sure but just doesn't look ok.
@@craigneidel Ah yes, that's true! Thank you! 🙂
I have tried it before and it does help.
Hey Craig do you know how fast the internal storage on the base model MacBook with 512 gb? Just wondering how fast the external is vs onboard storage
Normally around 2,800 to 3,000 MB/s roughly.
@@craigneidel so the external is around as fast as internal? Sorry I just wanted to make sure before I make a mistake and upgrade the storage. Thanks again. I love your vids by the way, keep them coming?
Yes, they are the same speed.
Current price on Amazon is $89. Good deal.
Yes pretty good price.
Well t obe fair not like the Mac is using those PCIe lanes for anything else why shouldn't it ?
Yes, I have already covered that many times in other videos for the reasons. I'm just letting people know since they always ask.
Disclaimer guys Mbps megabits not MBps megabytes. He’s transferring 5 gigabytes a sec of data basically. And yes this device will work on windows as long as you have the right ports if not speeds may be different.
I said about 2800 MB/s on reads and writes. Not sure what you are saying.
Costs too much
2800 MB/s is going to cost more
