    I've read of warnings of not going with NVMe drives that don't have DRAM. I've read stories of people using those drives that don't have DRAM and then losing data. Or the drive failing. Though, I plan to just stick with performance drives so I don't have to worry about having one drive for OS and a slower cheaper drive for the 2nd drive spot.

    I live in Thailand and wanted to see how the price compares here. Surprisingly, all these drives are 10% more expensive here with the exception of the Kingston which is the same price for the 1TB but the winner over here is 2TB Kingston for only $86 vs $118 on Amazon. Further discounting may be on its way for that model. It's as fast as I need.

    I was going to buy the Kingston NVMe back when it was on sale for $30, but then read of complaints of it failing. And I believe it doesn't have DRAM, which people complained about.

    I watched your old video about making a boot drive for a 2017 iMac. I am trying to do the same currently. Which of these drives would be the best for that purpose?

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před měsícem +1

      I normally just use the SATA M.2 for this because they work fine and you don't need to worry about heat. But, they are only 500 MB/s which is fast enough to make it snappy but not as fast as it could be. As long as you have a good enclosure any of the M.2 even the NVMe M.2 drives are great to use.

    Most importantly, will the prices go down? I bought MX500 for 65 CAD a year ago, and now it costs 120 CAD. Even during the pandemic the prices on SSDs were lower.

    Lexar NM790 are DRAMless. Beware! p.s. can you talk about 4TB size? Thanks

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 28 dny

      Yes, they are but they are fine for just about anything you do as DRAMLess are so much better now then before. I use them and don't even really notice a difference.

    • @MaxRiley
      @MaxRiley Před 28 dny

      @@craigneidelapparently the difference is in longevity though. I'm looking for a 4TB m.2 SSD with good TBW for storage that will last long, but I have no idea what features must have to be good for that purpose. Any suggestions in the consumer segment, please? Thanks

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 26 dny +1

      A good site to check out is Microcenter.com and search the SSDs. They normally list the TBW numbers on all drives and you can use that as a measure.

      @@craigneidel that website is listed on Google but when I open it it returns this: Forbidden - ID: 7f1c3281124492cafe2a8b3ca998358d That's weird. I can visit any other website around the globe. Thanks though, Craig. Regards from Italy.

    Did that Samsung NVMe problem ever get fixed where they started dying? I've always used Samsung SSD's. But recently got a newer computer to run Windows 11, and it uses NVMe. So when I get a new drive, I'm thinking of just going with Western Digital Black performance. Probably will wait for black Friday deals.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 26 dny

      Samsung or WD are both good drives and you should have no issues with either.

    • @kaislate
      @kaislate Před 23 dny

      @colt5189
      YES. There was a firmware update that can be found on the Samsung semiconductor site or through the Samsung Magician software for nvme drives.
      If you purchased a Samsung nvme manufactured in 2024 you are fine otherwise earl 2023 models will need to be updated still. Most 970 and 980 nvme drives may have been sitting on shelves / warehouses for a while so most likely will be needing updated upon first use via an external or secondary motherboard slot before writing any data to them.

    • @colt5189
      @colt5189 Před 23 dny

      @@kaislate I’ve read some still had problems even after the update?

    • @kaislate
      @kaislate Před 23 dny

      @@colt5189 I think some may already had damage done to them if they were overheating. Buying a new one and flashing before writing data to it should be fine. Though there are many brands that have caught up with Samsung that you may consider of you are still worried.
      Sabrent will probably have some good deals for Prime Day. Sleeper deal is going to be looking to see what price the Acer Predator nvme will be. Shhhh. Dont tell anyone. ;)

    • @kaislate
      @kaislate Před 23 dny

      If people want a good priced 500GB or 1TB gen4 then really the only one to consider is the MSI Spatium nvme drives. Of course unless you absolutely need it today you should be waiting for the deals next week.
      The Spatium is still an E18 / B27B but performs well even with the weird SLC cache issue. For the price there isn't anything that performs better and it is still one of the lowest cost drives for the capacity as well.

    • @craigneidel

      Most WD are good but the green will be a little slower for power savings etc. but overall I like the drive and it may run a bit cooler which is a plus.
