CRITICS' PRAISE FOR THE BOOK
"Miyamoto Musashi: A Life in Arms is an impressive work of scholarship, offering insanely detailed recounts of Musashi’s battles and movements, some so richly rendered that you’d swear De Lange was present at the time, taking notes." - San Francisco Book Review
“If anyone is qualified to fill in the missing details of Musashi’s life, it is De lange, who has surely done more research on the subject than any other non-Japanese…He has painted a remarkably vibrant portrait of Musashi, one that reveals all the contradictions of a remarkable life full of triumphs and disappointments, thrilling victories as well as bitter losses…This book is unquestionably a must-read for any student of budō. - Kendō World
"Miyamoto Musashi: A Life in Arms is highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the biography of this most interesting man who has inspired generations of swordsmen and manga fans alike." - Iaido Journal
"This is perhaps one of the most vital and important texts on the life of Miyamoto Musashi. De Lange has searched the original military records of the campaigns Musashi was involved with and other supporting documents to provide the first accurate assessment of Musashi's life in the English language.” - Irish Fighter Magazine
"If you are looking for a good read and a fantastic resource into the period in which Musashi lived then this is a great addition to your Koryu Library” - Kaigan Dojo
Sjok

I'm betting he hadn't even began to think that people hundreds of years later would look at him like a legend.
+Juan Valdez Good point, he would probably have been bemused...
Juan Valdez he was the first person to catch flies with chopsticks
Yeah, but big flies only...
But he wrote a book. The Book of the Five Rings. With even a managed ego, he must have felt writing a book would carry forward his thoughts, beliefs and therefore a bit of himself, his biography. Which it did.
He wrote a couple of books, so he had to have some thoughts of posterity. And fighting was how young samurai made a name for themselves. And all the dojo storming he did indicates he was trying to build up his reputation.
The world needs more Musashi.

Hi Shadow, Glad you enjoyed it. Also check out the Yagyu series!
S&T essence of Buddhist teaching that you should not be attached to what you are doing therefore if you are a warrior and you have no attachment to what you are doing that is still the spiritual way although it does take most of us a full life time to fully mature

Thank you for existing, sir. I am here after that amazing manga
I first learned of Musashi Miyamoto from Inagaki's "Samurai" trilogy with Toshiro Mifune as Musashi. CZcams's algorithms have discovered that I pay attention to Musashi stuff, so this video came up in my recommendations. BTW, if you've never seen Inagaki's trilogy, give it a watch. The three films are a real tear-jerker/soap opera, but they feature memorable fight scenes, characters and cinematography.
Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto
Samurai 2: Duel at Ichijoji Temple
Samurai 3: Duel at Ganryu Island
I wonder how Musashi reconciled the dharma with his past killings. If you have any knowledge of Buddhism, one of the precepts is to not kill or take life. This is not a commandment, but instead a tool to help avoid generating unnecessary karma. It is obvious (and he mentions it in his writings) that he practiced buddhism even from a young age. At the point when he was developing his talent he would have been in opposition with the dharma. Not because he was breaking a precept but instead because he felt the need to conquer others. As the zen quote goes, it is meaningless if a man can defeat a thousand men but heaven bows to a man who conquers himself. Only later in life did he discover the way and in this discovery he realized there was no need. It was like sword fighting and violence was the road towards realization that sword fighting and violence was unnecessary. I just wonder if this ever impacted him or was the culture an over-riding force or did the realization make the entire experience clear?
Krumple Themal Good point, Krumple. Although he is universally well-known in the martial arts world and to students of Eastern cultures and religion, in terms of being a truly fascinating historical figure who is relatively unknown to the average Westerner Musashi ranks very high. And in my opinion - for the reason you stated in your post - he is also one of history's more complex and enigmatic figures.
Krumple Themal Miyamoto Musashi recorded the moment he achieved sattori after killing an opponent by the name of Sasaki Kojiro. After that Musashi never used a real sword in any duels again only using a bokken which he then still inflicted fatal wounds on his opponents.

Perhaps Musashi's father treated him badly because his mother died in childbirth. And his father blamed it on Miyamoto.
+Kyle Bryan Yes, i think there is some truth in that...
musashis father saw that is san wanna be more good then him and they don't like that in japan
No one knows for sure if Musashi's mother died in childbirth. There's considerable confusion over his parentage, with one of the scenarios involving his mother dying in childbirth.

It's not that he is a legend, it's that he is a human that achieve his greater self, we can do that, if we have the time, in his time it was simple work there and there was even a ronins, which now doesnt exist because projectile weapons, more jobs, technology, and more civilian control? Like police.
The weak will always find excuses, even though our era is more strict, we can still acknowledge and find our best self

But he was on the loosing side of his first battle.
That is what Yoshikawa Eiji would have liked us to believe. However, during the Battle of Sekigahara Musashi was fighting alongside his father in the Battle of Ishigakigahara...
