Musashi’s written works expand on the ‘path of the warrior’, which is the samurai way of discipline, focus, restraint, and honor. The path of the warrior is governed by moral and ethical codes that are commonly referred to as Bushidō. Shortly before he died, Musashi compiled twenty-one principles on how a warrior should live.
These timeless principles known as Dokkōdō can inspire us today to live well. This three-part series elaborates on the twenty-one principles from Musashi’s Dokkōdō. The first part and second part explored the first fourteen principles. This third and final part further explores the path of the warrior, based on the last seven principles.
Please note, the elaborations in this video are based on existing philosophies, the author’s interpretations, and reasoning, and are intended to be an inspiration for present-day life.

Hi @Einzelgänger thank you very much for this awesome video. I have been watching your videos regularly. I have a doubt though, In this video, you have explained the life of Miyamoto Musashi who was a warrior who used to achieve his goal with full commitment. But the previous video (The Backwards Law) tells you to stop trying hard to reach a particular goal and you will have it. Both these views seem to be mutually contradicting. How are we supposed to make a conclusion out of it?

He meant that stop worrying about Death constantly. When it comes, it comes. It doesn't really have to do with the Unknown or whatsoever, he simply meant that just enjoy your life to the fullest. Death will come, and when you cannot control it, it's not worth worrying about.

Miyamoto Musashi - 21 life principles (SUMMARY) :
    1. Accept everything as it is -
Do not stress yourself over the fact that things aren't as good, accept the conditions as they are and deal with it calmly.
    2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake -
If you indulge in pleasure you could never be where you want to be in life, pleasures should be like a side effect that comes with success.
    3. Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling -
Feelings makes us delusional, they are partial reality, we shouldn't make any decisions going with the feeling, let the feelings calm down and then make a decision with a calm mind.
    4. Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world -
Thinking lightly means in this heard of millions of people we aren't as important. If we die tomorrow, this earth won't stop spinning, we are nothing compared to the vastness of the universe. However good/popular/powerful you become this world never depends on you, you depend on this world to survive. Be humble to the greatness on the world/universe.
    5. Be detached from desire your whole life long -
If we desire something that means we have let our happiness depend on something that is out of our control, and as our desires are controlled by external factors our ultimately happiness is controlled by external factors.
"There is nothing out side of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself." - Miyamoto Musashi
Even though we should be humble to the greatness of the universe, we should focus on our actions within that universe and not on what we can get from that universe.
"The things in our control are by nature free, unrestrained, unhindered; but those not in our control are weak, slavish, restrained, belonging to others" - Epictetus
    6. Do not regret what you have done -
Learning a lesson from happenings is a good thing but beating yourself over the past things never helps with your present. Those happenings are the real wisdoms in your life, that taught you something and now you are a little better person.
"When you lose, don't lose the lesson" - Dalai Lama
    7. Never be jealous -
Jealousy makes us feel bad for ourselves, for example seeing couples can make one lonely person feel bad, and that person might spend a lot of time thinking/desiring the things they don't have, that's just a waste of mental energy. As we move forward in life, we will encounter many such occurrences, the only thing we could do is do our work honestly (not thinking that work might achieve us things we don't have), out there in this world we have to turn our blinds on sometimes to keep our journey ongoing. All energy spent on bitterly comparing ourselves with others is energy wasted.
    8. Never let yourself be saddened by a separation -
Separation with people/things will happen throughout our lives temporarily or permanently, and having attachment to those only lead to suffering. So we should be accepting the fact that nothing outside of our mind is completely ours, things will comes and go (always).
    9. Resentment (being bitter about things) and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself or others -
A lot unpleasant things will happened in life, people will act badly, rudely, unfairly, foolishly with you & life is unfair, nature is almost always working against you, trying to change everything wrong is like fighting against the nature, you can't change everything, so you should spend too much time changing things and no time resenting about things, just live the best life you can while accepting the conditions around.
"Be tolerant with others, strict with yourselves" - Marques Arelious
    10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love -
Like many other things in life, love/lust can overcome us, but we have the choice whether or not to engage in these feelings, instead of being guided by these feelings we should let our minds think rationally so that we could stay grounded and stay on our path. Love/lust makes people make unwise decisions quite often so one should always be aware of these biases while making a decision.
    11. In all things have no preferences -
Having preferences in things can make us feel uncomfortable in situations where something is happening that we don't like, so it's like giving external things power to mess with our mood. Embrace what fate has to offer and make best our of it.
    12. Be indifferent to where you live -
We'll go to a lot of different places in our lives, the important thing to keep in mind is it's not actually about the place you are staying in because you are carrying yourself with you and it's the only thing that matters, being attached to older place or hating the new one is one more thing in your day that you worry about, The home is where you are.
    13. Do not pursue the taste of good food -
As we eat more and more extravagant food we get less and less taste from normal food, that leads us to craving for better and being dissatisfied when there something underwhelming, and running behind the taste ultimately leads us to being in a unhealthy loop. Appreciate normal food, have a measured healthy diet, and don't give up to your cravings.
    14. Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need -
Having or collecting possessions only makes us wanting to have more, and it also develops the fear of losing those things or fear of not getting those in future. One should not avoid having unnecessary possessions and should not get attached to them, like everything, they come and go, and having something do not represent who you are.
    15. Do not act following customary beliefs (blind obedience/herd mentality) -
You should always use your mind rationally to come to a conclusion instead of being influenced by someone or blindly following someone. Like for example how the use of alcohol is legalised and is considered fun and is totally normalised as opposed to it's harmful effects it can have on ones life, so it's in ones good to think independently to see how anything they are doing is bringing them any good.
    16. Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful -
"You should not have a favourite weapon. To become over-familiar with one weapon is as much a fault as not knowing it sufficiently well. You should not copy others, but use weapons which you can handle properly. It is bad for commanders and troops to have likes and dislikes. These are things you must learn thoroughly." - Miyamoto
You should not be attached to one particular method always. You should be able to discard a huge part of the process if it doesn't work with being biased toward anything.
    17. Do not fear death -
Life isn't a fairy tale, we all die, we could die anytime anywhere, yet most of us let the fear of inevitable generate unnecessary anxiety.
    18. Do not seek to possess either goods or fiefs for you old age -
It doesn't say one shouldn't have any possessions, but running behind things in life can affect our health/mind. instead we should be more focused on developing our mind or doing other fulfilling stuff.
    19. Respect God without counting on their help -
Whatever beliefs you have, we should respect it but instead of relying on those beliefs for outcomes one should focus more on your actions, you are truly the one responsible for better outcomes.
    20. You may abandon your own body but you must preserve you honor - (differs from culture to culture)
    21. Never stray from the way -
Whatever you wish to have in life can't be achieved without being serious about it, so whatever you do you should always have your goal in mind.

I am a female army veteran in my 60s. When I was 26 years old, I bought and read the book MUSASHI, by Eiji Yoshikawa. It is a serialized form of novel about the life of Miyamoto MUSASHI, one of the creators of the code of bushido in the samurai era of Japan. This started me on a lifetime interest in Japanese literature of their middle ages. I gifted my son a copy of this book when he was fourteen years old, as I felt he needed to read it particularly then. He also became enamored, as I was. I also acquired A Book of Five Rings and delved deeper. It is one of my top twenty books that I have read in a lifetime of voracious reading. I am glad to have found this channel. Thank you that in a time of insipid, shallow offerings on you tube, you are proving that there are still deep thinkers and independent souls in this world.

Very important to say the "Do not fear death" is not only about literal death, for samurais, who fought for their life, death was equal to failure, so the sentence can actually be interpeted as "Do not fear failure". Failure is a part of life just like death is a part of life, we should accept that it might happen, the thing thats good with our life is that most of our failures are not permanent, so if we do not fear them we can only learn from them.

So now I stay away from everyone, social media etc... and my life makes more sense..life is less chaotic...I now realise that people actually limit me greatly and only bring more conflict rather than anything to enhance my life... its helped me realise the emptiness and foolishness of everything, everything humans do is either a pleasure chase or an escape from pain/ misery... or an endless need to boost one's own self image... its helped me see my own foolishness of social posturing to where I act like everyone else.. now I feel no need to have friends... I feel no desire to attend social gatherings...I know that my life today... whether a great event occurs will always return back to the way it always has been...so now I live for mastery

The pandemic has provided the perfect opportunity to reflect alone and watch the world go by. I've gained wisdom in the past two years much faster than I would have other wise. Part of this is because in my reflection, I realized that to become wise, one must pursue wisdom only for it's own sake. It sounds easy, but so many people have their beliefs so heavily integrated into their identities that they have extreme difficulty actually doing this. In social environments, pressures of "if you're not helping, you're part of the problem" make this even harder. I do my best to detach myself from my beliefs and approach everything with skepticism simply because I seek truth. I don't care what the truth is as long as it's the truth.

Want everyone watching this to know some things:
Musashi DID adopt children and did his best to NOT be a loner first.
    1. His first son rose to high rank and was forced to commit suicide. Musashi feasted w/ him and sent him off well.
    2. His second son replaced the first's role and by all accounts survived
    3. His blood daughter died at a very young age (around 3) and he mourned for her/cried for her.
Musashi was not a monster who lived alone in a cave. But I think his dedication to the sword and the suffering he experienced contributed perhaps towards his Ascetic goals of non-attachment/zen buddhism.

    • @andrewrivera4046
      @andrewrivera4046 Před rokem

I think there are merits in his teachings but I belive there should be balance. He says not to seek pleasure in life basically and to just take things as they are. From a sword fighting aspect of his passive style, basically let your opponent make the first move and use their own momentum against them. At the end of the day, if the opponent is the aggressor then chances are they aren't thinking clearly.
The trade off here is knowing what your fighting for. He talks about not being attached. What if your family is in danger? Then is family worth fighting for or do you just let what happens happen? I think if anything, what I have learn from Musashi is how to pick my battles and decerning what is worth fighting for and what needs to be let go.
I think there is merit in finding joy in life and love. Whats it is absolutely important is not to become blinded/naive because of it.

      @@andrewrivera4046 with love and respect,
I think you hit on strong points. I want to tell you, he did indeed do as you suggested in my knowledge 🙂
He had 2 adopted sons (1 committed seppuku for his lord, one took his place) and one daughter who died as a little girl. He was said to have cried very much for her and his own students were worried.
He was fully human but I can see now as someone who has been fighting and lived a martial life, in the -moment- of the fight. The most important moment when you're fighting and will be knocked out/die or knock out/kill your enemy, the less thoughts/mental chaff the better.
Rough estimate from a study but please give me your patience. We can process 160 bits of info a second. Talking takes up 70+./ We can barely listen to two people talk.
When the enemy is "F*** F**** he's coming, my wife...my kids..my people.. I must strive.. I must fight. They will.. DIE!" He is "Cut."
"Cut." Musashi is mentally, through his training, focusing on the most -important moment-. Cut. All the loving courage, bravery, courage. Cut. It's a ride but it is the truth imo sir. Limit your brains power to 1 thing and it will outperform the man focusing/thinking/worrying on many.

    • @r.t.972
      @r.t.972 Před rokem

Try this out when you train. Take a very deep breathe, exhale and think/say "The spirit of cutting" or striking etc. Take every moment you can to hit and gain advantage. If it's a sword it's effortless, with the stick it's more difficult but still, you beat the man w/ 100 ideas. You're already there cutting/crushing/striking him.

No, that is totally different. Miyamoto Musashi's words mean that you should not have a favorite weapon, because if you lost that you won't be able to adapt to fight with another weapon. Bruce Lee's words mean that you should achieve masterkey in a single subject rather than remaining average in 100 different subjects. One tells about attachment and the other about practice.

Maybe he did. But upon those moments, his instincts to be always battle ready at the slightest instance does not drop with his sword. He clearly understands that those moments (pissing, drinking, eating, taking a shit) would be the most favourable time for him to get ambushed, especially for a wandering practitioner like him. I subscribed because I feel that by addressing perspectives from similar to contradictory, it fulfills what we humans should practice every day of our lives and that is holographic thinking.
