There they are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of East Germany, and in one month the Berlin Wall comes down, and in one year the provinces of East Germany had all voted to join the Federal Republic, West Germany. It was an emotional time, and now, with the Russian invasion of the Ukraine, it certainly looks like the good old days.
Best to choose neither. Those ideologies, just like fascism and national socialism, will always end up in dictatorship and surpression of human rights. If those ideologies are so beautiful, who do countries who uphold such systems kill their own people or prevent from leaving their 'workers paradise'?
It happens with every new type of government, Capitalism in his first century of existence caused countries to kill and enslave their own people, like the french revolution wich ended in the bloody dictatorship of Robespierre...

Liberalism and fascism have more in common in practice and in theory. A revolution in any country regardless of what they stand for have always been “authoritarian” (this and totalitarianism aren’t accepted terms in political science anymore) including the French and American revolutions. So of course during the early years of the ussr you could say it was very “authoritarian” but that is necessary to keep a revolution alive and able to defend itself (which the ussr had to on multiple occasions) the ussr obviously had multiple problems such as corruption and an overly rigid bureaucracy filled with old farts, which had more to do with the downfall of the ussr than anything to do with the theory of communism/Marxism-Leninism in itself.
