Too bad people who didn't have the choice to leave the GDR don't have that much golden memories. Not hard to imagine if you lived in a dictatorial police state with mass surveillance, constant material shortages and no human right guarantees.

Such a shame this beautiful country doesn't exist anymore. They, along with USSR and Cuba, supported a lot of Global South liberation movements. Once USSR and GDR fell...all other movements fell too. :/ Makes me sad. Which is why I support China, Cuba, DPRK, Vietnam, and Laos now.

If you read the title you can see that it says Arbeiterkampfgruppen. It's translated in the description as paramilitary but more directly it would mean something like the worker's fighting groups or units. That's the whole point of a conscript army, to turn the entire people into a fighting force if needed.
What really scared the West was that the socialist system offered an ideological alternative to capitalism, even if the DDR never really lived up to the socialist ideals.

В городе Царское Село (Пушкин) под Санкт-Петербургом находится памятник Эрнсту Тельману.
Во время оккупации города Пушкина 1941-44 годов фашисты снесли памятник Ленину и отправили его в Германию на переплавку. Но немецкие рабочие спрятали памятник Ленину под грудой угля, где он и пролежал до конца войны. После образования ГДР памятник Ленину был установлен в одном из городов Восточной Германии, а городу Пушкину немцы подарили памятник Эрнсту Тельману, вождю немецких коммунистов, погибшему в нацистском концлагере в 1944-м году. Такая вот история.

I went to Berlin last November and just looking around I much preferred the east German style buildings on the east rather than the naff buildings built by the west as a propaganda tool to try and sway the east Germans towards their side, East Berlin was the better side in my opinion

Exactly what buildings? I thought the old apartment blocks were very ugly. But they did serve a purpose, they had to be put up quickly and cheaply. Much of the old architecture was concrete and brutal, and has asbestos in it. Some of the historic preservation started by the GDR was very good-- but much of the postwar construction was not that great.

They are practically Wehrmacht military bands. The cut of the uniform is Wehrmacht, the helmet was designed by the Wehrmacht and almost all their compositions were inherited from the Wehrmacht.

Nazis have a national view of historical conflict. Marxists have a class-based view of historical conflict. This is a fundamental difference. You might disagree with both of them, but don't let that make you put them into the same box.

Deshalb nochmal zu deinem ach so tollen vorschlag einer abstimmung. Die menschen bevorzugen wahrscheinlich das land, in dem man seine meinung öffentlich sagen darf.
In terms of military, I wish more countries today could be more like this. Now it's all about identity politics and making sure certain groups of individuals feel special about themselves.

How could compare ddr to nazi germany?! Do they really think under hitler such a bearded cool guy as the one in 01:17 could parade between the sa ? (Other than singin' the internazionale'):D I love DDR anyway -_-...

Yes, that is what I observed as well, why is that so? Is this a reserve unit? I was additionally struck by the lack of enthusiasm that I saw on the faces of the soldiers, the singing appeared to be compelled. It is completely different from what the pre-war propaganda films the Nazis, those soldiers genuinely looked like they were happy to serve their country.
DDR had the best army in the the Germanic Military History, although not battle tested. Prussian German traditions reinforced by Soviet doctrines would have made it a formidable force to be reckoned on the European theatre.

als ich Anfang 90ger Jahre in der Wendezeit mal im Eichsfeld war habe ich nur einen furchtbaren Schrotthaufen vorgefunden. George Orwells 1984, nur die Plakate von Big Brother fehlten. Meterhohe Bäume im Kirchturm in Heiligenstadt. Bröckel überall. Ein Jahr später sah es dann schon besser aus. Ob Ost, ob West - im Schrott am best'. Ich hatte nur einen Wunsch: mit dem Radl so schnell wie möglich wieder nach Göttingen. Somit - keine Trauer wegen Fall der Mauer.

I am curious about life in East Germany. It sure was not a paridise, but I understand that was because it was under the Soviet Union. Russians did not take to fond of Germans after the war.

Those soldiers don't look very formidable. If a war had broken out, I don't think they would have fought very hard like their fathers and grandfathers did.

and don't forget that the east germans didn't oppose resistance to the construction of the wall.
Surely we can find a better way though. The socialism of the DDR was not ideal, but many are not happy with the hardness of the present Germany. Some of Hitler's German was excellent, as was parts of the USSR. The ideas also in the US Constitution are also wonderful, although they have been misinterpreted today, to my mind. All of these people start out with good ideas, but somehow self serving individuals think they are above all that, and go on a power trip.

@Ukaruto sozialismus kann auch das ziel sein, denn eine gesellschaft in der der produktionsmehrwert in die entwicklung des landes und die wohlfahrt der bevölkerung investiert wird statt als privateigentum zu enden, ist auch ein erstrebenswerter zustand.
man kann auch einfach ein parlament mit vielen parteien haben und eine sozialistische verfassung
dann wäre korruption sowojl wirtschaftlich als auch politisch unmöglich
