This makes the line "You would be wise to surrender" hurt a little more. JFO is relatively early in terms of Anakin being Vader, so maybe he recognized Cal and his legacy, and that line was Anakin talking like, "I know you, you survived the Purge. That takes some guts. Join me."

Star Wars: Brotherhood was absolutely phenomenal. Mike Chen absolutely nailed the tone of prequels. I think it's definitely a top 5 canon novel at this point.

This actually might explain a minor, yet bizarre, thing about Cal. His gloved hand. He has a glove on one hand, but his other is bare.
My theory about this is that maybe Cal is trying to remember Anakin, who was seen as the Hero Without Fear (ironic) during the Clone Wars. Cal wasn't at the Jedi Temple during Operation Nightfall, so he wouldn't have known Anakin had fallen to the dark side and had become Darth Vader. He would've thought he had died, betrayed by his own troops.

Edit: okay. It could just be because he was in the Scrapper Guild. Still doesn't exactly explain why he has only one gloved hand, you'd think such a hazardous job would require heavy duty gloves on both hands. But what do I know?

Having Cal Kestis along with most main canon protagonists survive the events of the Galactic Civil War undercuts the danger of the Galactic Empire and the war as a whole. *Cough* Rebels *Cough*.
Canon is overrated it Star Wars the galaxy is a huge place.
It could be that Anakin saw something in Cal and when he saw him again as an adult he recognized him and understood that Cal would be a good understudy or at the least a good inquisitor.
Maybe Anakin recognizes Cal somehow as Vader.

@@ShadowLarvitar he might not think about it like that tho, he recognises that with ahsoka he might risk going back to the light so he needs to fight those feelings and actively fuel his hatred to stay a sith. with cal he might be less angry/emotional and therefore more vulnerable to feeling sympathetic or nostalgic. he even says "you would be wise to surrender" showing that he doesnt really care how this turns out and wont let him live but wont really fight.. as soon as he realises cal is actually getting away he stops him and goes to kill him and wouldve if bd1 didnt save him and also cere
@@RageUnchained since the rule of two a sith apprentice is always on the lookout for an apprentice of his own. the natural order for Sith is to destroy their master to prove they are stronger, thus continuing to make the Sith stronger. Every Jedi is a potential apprentice. That's not what Vader would tell Sidious of course, but he'd always be on the lookout for someone who is strong enough to become his apprentice. The master hopes that one day his apprentice will become strong enough to defeat him while trying his best to remain top dog, this is the Sith way.

Since Anakin met Cal's master, it would've been cool of we had some kind of banter between Zeb and Vader in Rebels, since both Cal's master and Zeb are apart of the Lasat species. I could see Vader maybe saying something like:
"I've met one of your kind before... and he died with the rest of those that resisted the Empire's rule."
Most especially since the Empire almost completely wiped out the Lasat species, it would be angering for Zeb I'm sure.

@@jasonshmecko2033 That's because the Lasat species was rather hard to come by. They're not the kind of alien that you'd see everywhere. A lot of them stayed on their home planet, the only ones that we've seen outside of their home planet were Zeb and Cal's master.

I didn't know Anakin and Cal met during the Clone Wars. Although it happened in a book I've never heard of, I like that they met. Vader clearly doesn't really remember Cal when he stands there in front of him with having just killed Trilla. I'm going to find this book and read it. It sounds interesting.

The text of Contingency Order 66 says only the the Jedi are to be "removed from the chain of command", and that "lethal force is authorized" to do so. Since a Jedi who does not wish to be detained can cause an awful lot of damage, I imagine many went for the lethal option, chip or no chip.
I have a short fanwork that basically assumes that what we saw on Felucia in RotS is a later historian's rewrite -- I figure the Great Canon Flush of 2014 gives me some leeway there. Anyway, in my account Bly doesn't believe that Gen. Secura was part of the Windu coup, so he attempts to detain her until they can find out what's really going on -- only for one of the more recently decanted troopers to panic and shoot the General as she is handing over her saber. Armand Isard later simplifies this to "Marshal Bly carried out the order," and the rest was misremembered as what we saw on screen....

Yoda felt Anakin's pain as he butchered the Sand People and his focus had been on Anakin, Palpatine had been grooming Anakin since before the Jedi discovered him on Tatooine I wouldn't be surprised if Palpatine had some hand in ensuring that Shmi was sold to Lars sensing that some tragedy would befall her and knowing that Anakin's sensitivity to the force and the love for his mother would draw him back to her in her most painful moment before dying... Palpatine was a master at manipulation, his foresight is genuinely the most terrifying thing about him and if Clone Wars taught us anything it's that he was an exceptionally skilled lightsaber master and force weilder, so much so he was fairly easily able to take on a Jedi grand Master more than 800 years his senior and one of the most powerful force weilders to ever exist (not even top 15, if counting extended universe, but in canon he is easily top 10 strongest)
Even if Palpatine already knew about that incident, he couldn't exactly let on that he knew. Therefore learned might be in quotes but he still needed to "learn" about that.

Honestly, it would be nice if we got a few special TCW crossover episodes featuring various characters from the games, Andor or the Obi-Wan series that we know were alive during that time period even if we never saw them in the movies or main series. For that matter, give me a full fledged Clone Wars Maz Kanata arc.

Minor correction, but the book actually refers to cal as a youngling, not padawan, which given how young he appears at the time of order 66, 3 years after the book, actually makes a good bit more sense then if he was already a padawan in this novel.

So, in this light, I hope that Cal somehow ends up learning about Vader and his story.

With Cal falling to the Dark Side, it could be really poignant if one of the things that brings him back is learning that a hero he looked up to also fell, and caused the worst tragedy the universe has ever seen because of it.
Also, it just generally would be really cool to see a former Jedi react to that information. Basically everyone we've seen find out about Anakin becoming Vader are people who are close to Anakin personally. It would be interesting to hear the perspective of someone who didn't really know him, but looked up to him as the Hero of the Clone Wars. Him and Obi-Wan were well-known an popular amongst the Jedi, Cal would have known his name and who he was.
Also also, I REALLY want to see the scene where Cal calls Vader "Anakin", like he did with the Ninth Sister at the start of Jedi: Survivor. Except this time it'll go completely different... No one calls Vader "Anakin" and lives. lol
