Just did this yesterday. Car wouldn't start and after bimmerfest diagnosis... I figured it was the fuel pump. This video was awesome. Saved me so much cash and brought me greater understanding of my car..just awesome!
Great step, by step video. I was having issues reinstalling the sending unit until I remembered you installed the rubber gasket on the tank before seating the fuel level unit. I did not remove the seat back, before starting, I have a 525i and there was lots of room to work. Once again, great video.
Did this yesterday with the help of this video. Many thanks! A tip for the guys reading here. My fuel filter “failed” last year and the symptoms of both failures were similar; Give gas and no joy and engine eventually turns off. Fuel filter being clogged caused the pump get noisy, just a FIY. Symptoms for the fuel filter failing was engine shudder periodically during low rpm and idle, often after starting the car again after doing a store run.
Thanks for the video, just finished installing my pump and it was a walk in the park after watching these instructions. Especially the bit on how to get the floater back in was very helpful! Cheers
Great Video!
Nice and straightforward. I was able to replace my pump and filter because of your videos. Saved me $400. Will definitely refer to your videos for future issues.
Thanks FCP Euro!
Great tutorial - saved me about $600 in labor and parts (I replaced the pump and reused the assembly) on my 2001 540i.
Coincidentally, once I got everything swapped out and buttoned up, I turned the ignition, and *CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK*. I could hear the fuel pump whirring when the key was at the 2 position, but the lights (interior and exterior) would dim at each click and the engine wouldn't turn. I thought I might have had a sizeable air bubble in the fuel line since I lost quite a bit of fuel when I disconnected the line from the sending unit, or that my tank was so low I was starving the fuel pump once I swapped it out, but it ended up being a bad battery with a bad cell. I was only getting about 11.5V with the accessories off and under 10 when cranking. Turns out my alternator issues earlier this year had crippled my battery. Luckily, it was 2 years and 9 months old and still covered under warranty, so I swapped that out and now we're up and running beautifully. Thanks!
Just did my fuel sending unit left side. Not to bad, but I got stuck at one point. I tried putting the rubber seal on the cap first but was unable to get the metal ring started. Then I remembered you putting the seal in the tank opening first. Your tip saved me, thanks.
You the Man !!!!, I had a 1992 BMW 735i the fuel pump was in the trunk it was an easy fix.
That was an awesome video. I will try and change my fuel pump this weekend on my 2008, 528i BMW. Thanks
Excellent vid, well filmed and explained
Awesome video. Good job to both mechanic and camera man/woman. More vids my good sir!
Great video! Hopefully this is very similar to do on my 08 528i

You're very welcome, Jenny! Happy to help!
You help me a lot!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks man...Great video and very helpful on how to install fuel pump...My problem is on my 2000 528i I'll have a full tank of gas and drive about 25-30 miles and the gas light will appear and when I remove the gas cap gas shoots out with force...but if i open the cap slowly it will release fumes and once that happens the gas needle will read normal until the next 25-30 miles are driven...I don't have a clue what could be the cause of this...maybe the sending unit? please help me if you can as i love this car and i've driven it for the past 14 years and would love to continue to do so :)
Great video Gareth! Very detailed and thorough. Would it help to do this fix when the tank is close to empty?
great job man.
I need a video for the hpfp replacement 535i 2008... but this one help me a lot too..
Hey FCP thanks for the video man. I have a 2013 528i and drivetrain malfunction that comes on when accelerating and on specific turns. This only occurs in D or DS but NOT in manual trip tonic. Also it turns off when turning car off onNo check engine lights or fault codes. Could my fuel pump be bad or dirty? What are your thoughts. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
I'm having the same issues...
@@mr.b2189 my advice is sell it! I dumped a tone of money in it & couldn’t get it fixed. My mechanic suggested one fore thing which was nee turbo booster $2500. I was done. Sold it for a loss.
Thanks for the video. It was easy to follow and didn't have brutalizing music in the background.
FWIW, it was a bit of a fight to get the housings to set down well into the new O-rings. On the driver's side, the second side I did, I sprayed a little silicone lubricant on a shop towel and wiped it around the bottom of the housing where it fits inside of O-ring. Worked like I charm. Settled in like butter. I re-did the passenger side, as I didn't like the way it fought the O-ring. I figured it could have rolled it as it was forced through. The silicone spray on the rag helped a lot. Cheers.
Great notes, and nice work!
part from 8.00-9.30min is the best , thx
Thanks for u reply brother I really appreciate thank u
Great video and I believe you saved me a great deal of time!
Car started for a few seconds then stopped and would not start. I pulled out the fuel pump in pieces. Not only had all the rubber pieces started disintegrating in the black plastic pump mount, they fell into the gas. The pump was free of the black plastic housing and had torn the hose to the sender.
When I changed my fuel filter, I had an idea to hook up my fuel transfer pump to the fuel line where it attaches to the filter input and started draining the tank. All kinds of #$%^^ came out so now I have some 15 gallons of contaminated gas.
Putting the new pump in took a lot of effort. I found it finally worked by directing the internal gas line to the right, then double back to the left to help get it out of the way. The top sender unit piece is a precision fit, on top of it already being spring loaded from underneath. When you finally get it lined up and ready for the big ring, you have to hold it in place and let the ring fully seat it. I pulled the ring back off after tightening and the sender lid was fully seated and sealed.
Yours videos "rock" Keep up!
hello, could you do a video on a 1985 bmw 635 csi fuel pump replacement, since im buying it just needs a new fuel pump. please and thank you
Thanks for Your Time ⌚
Good job dude!
Will this be the same for a 1998 540i. Getting sputtering at acceleration. Now getting misfire codes. Also got a misfire code for tank being run dry but it had about 40 miles to empty. Its been driving bad and sputtering lightly for 2 weeks, only at acceleration. Couldn't figure it out but the code saying the tank ran dry might help. Any thoughts. Great video. I did the level sensor on the driver side. My thought is to do the fuel pump and level sensor at the same time since I'm in there.
Gareth,
Thanks for the DIY as this is on my list to do. My 540 has 94k with complete cooling system overhaul and I'm not sure what should be next. I was either going to replace the fuel pump or the alternator as I've heard both of them are known to fail. Which would you suggest being done first?
Good vid!!
Great job 👏
Very good video.
Test the system. Resting voltage should be around 12.2-12.4 volts. When the car is running the voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.4 volts. If you're within this range I wouldn't worry about it. You can also test fuel pressure at the Schroeder valve at the fuel rail. You should be around 50PSI with the engine running. If you are within these ranges I wouldn't worry about it too much. If anything, I would siggest replacing the fuel filter as a precaution.
Thanks. It's right at 14.0 with it running idle.
Not sure of the thread size, but a normal fuel pressure gauge should have any adapters you need to fit it.
Still useful 7 years later!
I guess you can say its Probably Not Spam!
Great video. Would you be able to tell me signs that the fuel pump is bad? I have a 335i 07. I'm smelling fuel from the back seat area and from outside the car as well. Thanks again
You'll notice a sputtering at high speeds, loss of power during acceleration, loss of power to the vehicle while under stress, surging, and hard starting.
Thanks for this, helpful!
💙
Great video love it
Glad you love it!
The fuel pump would turn on with the key in position 2. I have had an ongoing issue with poor performance especially with heavy throttle (basically felt like the car was shutting down). I tested fuel pressure at the Schroeder valve on the fuel rail and found that it read at a mere 10-15PSI (engine off). The fuel pressure regulator was fine which meant that the fuel pump itself was not physically moving enough fuel. Fuel pressure returned to within spec after the fuel pump was replaced.
Good video
Having trouble with mine. Do you hit that metal ring clockwise or counterclockwise
When disconnecting the battery, does the battery have to be reprogrammed or registered to the car?
I dont know exactly how to say but on the black frame(let say pump holder) is some thing with small o ring....
Bro this thing will also work on bmw 528i 1997 model or not? and from where I can order a fuel pump for my bmw 528i 1997?
Thank you
I believe I have some fuel delivery problems as well, there's a schrader valve at the front of the fuel rail. There isn't an auto parts store around that has the adapter to measure the operating fuel pressure. 2 questions, what is the thread at the schrader valve and is there a tool to attach to it?
Here is my vin I need the fuel pump and the assembly, Not sure why I just changed the assembly and the acr didn't want to start , I checked all fuses relays battery and nothing I had a guy come and he ran his diagnosis said we need to buy pump and filter from bmw and use the orginal part . What else could it be ? There was nothing wrong with anything before we did it we just happened to have the fuel assembly on hand were thinking mabie it shocked the pump and now we have to replace the pump? The pump does make a little sound for one second when I put the key in . Please tell me what u have for my car or suggestions
Does anyone know if this is the same process for a wagon/touring edition
do you have problem fuel not transfer from left to right side tank?
At the 4:20 mark, you say that you will be replacing the gasket. Is this essential or can we reuse the gasket. I am only wanting to remove fuel from the tank of my car. Also, can I leave the fuel pump in while doing this?
My bmw e60 525d msport 2005 fuel pump fuses are blowing. Even without turning the key. When i just put the fuse in, it just blows with a spark and little smelly smoke. It is fuse number 50 of 20amps placed in the boot above the battery in the fuse box.. Any idea ? Please help..
Thanks again very much would you happen to smell gas from inside the vehicle or outside?
Hello Scott, it's possible that you may smell gas from inside the vehicle.
great job
Thanks, Guilherme!
Ok thanks again
Just tried this, got everything in just need to seal it down. I'm having trouble trying to get that white piece back in, after re watching the video I noticed you put the seal down first then pressed the cap on top of it? Does it make it easier to go in when the gasket seal is at the bottom then pressing the cap over it ? Thanks
Porter Filmz It was much easier to seat the gasket first and then put the top of the sending unit in place. The lock ring that seals the top of the sending unit to the fuel tank will press it into the seal making for an air tight seal. It's just cumbersome to put the gasket on the sending unit and try to put it into place.
Will this work for a 2002 530i??
Why would you remove the back part of the seats and not just the bottom part? 🤔
why would you need to replace the fuel pump? what were they symptoms that you made you want to do this?
Why not replace pump with assembly? wouldnt that be easier and you wouldnt have to mess with wiring?
Did you depressurize? I was told a good method is to disco power from the pump and then start car - will depressurize . Or is this not really necessary? ABout to try and worried that im gonna make a gasoline mess.
where can i find replacements for the access panel?
How do you know if your fuel pump is bad? Thanks for all the info btw
We actually have a great article on diagnosis for this!
blog.fcpeuro.com/fuel-pump-problems-symptoms-misdiagnoses
My sisters E39 was barely starting and barely running idle.. 1st thing I looked at was the filter.. it was dirty but not clogged. There was not much fuell pressure when i swithced the ignition on with the filter detached. So next suspect was the pump. Changed it and all was fine again.
It wouldn't hurt, our tank was about half-full (or half-empty if you're a pessimist) and we didn't have any trouble. You probably don't want to be sticking your hands deep into a full tank though.
Nice one Gareth.
What are the signs that the pump has failed?
+Musonda Kapatamoyo Best way to figure out if a fuel pump has failed is to test that there is power at the sending unit connector/harness when the key is in accessory mode. The fuel pump is supposed to prime when the key is in POS2. If there is voltage at the connector but the pump will not turn on it has failed. If there is no voltage at the connector for the sending unit I would check other electrical items such as the fuel pump relay first. Additionally, a failed crank position sensor will prevent the fuel pump from turning on as well but you will have a code for an open circuit on a failed crank sensor.
+FCP Euro Thanks for the feedback and clues.
Gareth at 5.16min you hold it with fingers. My o ring is missing but I ma not sure how important it is.
Hello, I'm not exactly sure what that is but it doesn't look to be a critical o-ring for the assembly.
I was with you having watched others do it. But lost a little when you started toying with wires.
I was actually hoping you'd replace the pump itself out of its plastic "harness". I need to replace mine as the back-pressure valve failed and that one is inside the pump itself. Any hints?
Unfortunately, the effort involved in replacing the pump insert in the plastic hanger/basket is a delicate procedure. The plastic becomes very brittle after being submerged in fuel and will likely break trying to release the pump insert. If the plastic were to break you'll then have to order an entire assembly which is only available from BMW. If you are attempting to install a new insert be extremely careful when removing the original pump. There are plastic retainers that secure the pump in place.
Hmm, thanks for the warning! Guess I'll have to see what happens.
I am glad to to be able to tell you that the plastic cage holding the fuel pump on a '97 E39 is not the least bit brittle, it is pretty tough actually. You need three flat screwdrivers and quite a bit of fumbling to get the pump out. Problem is you can't push the pump and you can't really pull either because there is nowhere to pull and there are three screwdrivers in the way ...
My Bmw E60 has been more than 10 years and hits 125k miles.... will the fuel pump fail without any symptoms right? Shall I change the fuel pump?
Hi Elffel, you are correct, a fuel can fail without warning. It might be a good idea to replace it, that way you won't be stranded somewhere if it does fail!
Question: is the fuel pressure regulator located close to the fuel filter in an '01 530i (E39)? If not where would it be? Thanks !!
Yes. In fact, the fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel filter on a 2001 530i. When replacing the fuel filter you will be default be replacing the fuel pressure regulator.
FCP Euro i appreciate the reply. I just ordered a new fuel filter. My mechanic said I have low fuel pressure. After installing a new fuel pump and checking all fuses, aside from the fuel filter, what else can cause low fuel pressure?
There are a variety of things that can cause a low fuel pressure condition. However, the easiest place to start generally is with the fuel filter as they are often not replaced regularly and can restrict fuel flow significantly when they get clogged. There are some mechanical related components that can cause fuel pressure to drop such as leaky injectors but that requires further testing.
Can I replace a fuel pump for a 5 series using any other model bmw ?
I have same question
Great video. I have a 1998 BMW 540i (147,000 miles). I have some gas leaking on the access panel to fuel tank on the drivers side under the rear seat. I'm going to replace that rubber ring and hopefully that will fix the leak. Sometimes when I start my car lately, it will die within 1-2 seconds. It usually will start back up. Would that be the fuel pump or sending unit? Is it the exact same process on both sides? Thanks.
The leak is likely due to a bad seal on on the access cover. The car starting and then dying quickly could be a few possibilities. Does this happen when the tank is full or while it is below half a tank. The process is basically the same for the left and right side. The only difference is the right side of the rank has a fuel transfer sucking pump but that does not interfere with any replacement of the pump or level sending unit.
It died once today and the tank is 3/4 full. Don't remember the other times where the gas was. It has happened about 8 times in the last 3 weeks. I ordered a new seal today. I have been smelling gas for about 2 months now, usually when I fill up with gas then it goes away after a day or two. Only one side is leaking that I see, do you recommend doing both sides or just wait until the other side starts to leak? Any ideas what might be causing it to die right after it starts? I think I understand, both sides have a pump and sending unit, the right just has an additional transfer sucking pump?
+MRXCHRISS It could be due to the fuel tank leak. It's a pressurized system. However, it could also potentially be caused by other things such as a bad fuel pressure regulator, clogged fuel filter, etc. It's basically impossible to say what the problem could be with certainty without diagnosing the car in person as there are many variables. The sucking jet pump which transfers fuel to the right side of the saddle tank is likely not the issue if it's happening regardless of how much fuel is in the tank.
Nice job. But you didn't need to remove the back seat.
Every how to video I watch about fuel pump replacements on E36/38/39 never go in to detail about HOW much of a pain in the ass that cap is that you need the screwdriver and hammer for. I've done about 3 of these, and every one has been hell! Usually always completely seized.
Where possible, douse the ring with penetrant (WD40, PB Blaster, etc.) and allow it to sit for a little while.
Gareth, I replaced the fuel pump 2000 528I. Now when the car is going uphill the car begins to sputter and sometimes die. Any thoughts?
+gr8day42 Does this happen when you have a full tank of gas or below half a tank of gas? I have a couple of possible answers for you but first need to know the condition in which it occurs.
+FCP Euro It happens when there is half a tank or less.
I dont see why removing the whole back seat for
does anybody know small black oring on the stick???
Hello Rene, Can you please clarify? I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly.
ETK doesnt show it, so hard to say,....
I got the same problem with my e39 the car crank but won't start help me please
There are a few places to look. For a car to start you need three things: air, fuel, and spark. The first place to ensure that the fuel pump is in fact actually working. When you turn the key to position 2 you should hear a "whirring" sound coming from under the passenger seat. If you do not hear the duel pump priming you will need to inspect the fuel pump relay in right side of the trunk above the battery. If the relay is not working or is faulty it will prevent the fuel pump from turning on. In fact, it is normally recommended to replace the fuel pump relay when installing a new fuel pump for good measure.
What where the symptoms
I see you cut out the difficult tedious bits... Hmmm
That's not the fuel tank. It's the rear passenger commode.
How can I tell if the pump is bad
The vehicle will not start and or have a hard time starting. You can also jump the fuel pump relay with the engine off, and listen to see if the pump kicks on and sounds healthy. You can also use a power probe to bench test the pump.
I prefer to just remove the tank from the bottom... so much easier
Ken Pikulski obviously you've never replaced a girl bump for a Beamer
This car has 2 fuel pumps or ?
Hi Marie, you have two units in the vehicle, a fuel pump and a level sending unit, one on either side of the tank.
German engineering ... gone to ****.
