The biggest problem I have with Siri, is when you it ask a question, and it responds with "Here's something I found on the web". I wish it would just read the results to me. Same with the HomePod Mini, which tells me to ask again from my iPhone.

I would argue that Bard or ChatGPT are different applications of a personal assistant altogether compared to Siri or Google assistant since they can’t do anything to manipulate your device, like setting timers, opening apps, controlling your smart home etc.

Yes, for me a senior it’s hard to keep up with all the settings and how to find them. Siri often can’t tell me and just gives me an internet search. Apple iPhone, and ipad should have an easy help search for their own products available through Siri.

This isn’t just a “senior’s thing”. I’m not a senior (getting close, but still…), and I’m regarded as pretty tech savvy in my workplace, and I struggle often to find where the right setting is parked. It really has to do with Settings’ adherence to an old-school hierarchal menu model. It should be “looser”, with each setting not necessarily parked in only one spot, and with choices that don’t go nearly so deep into the hierarchy.

7:55 - Remind me about this …. Was not able to generate a reminder for a specific day of the week (always responded with “What do you want to be reminded about …). It seemed to only be able to generate the reminder based on time relative to “now”. I.e. Remind me in 30 minutes; Remind me tomorrow; Remind me in 3 days; but not Remind me Thursday. This did work for a specific date (Remind me about this January 18th). With Siri, there seems to always be a bit of experimentation involved …. And helpful videos online such as this.

Another excellent Siri video. I’m so glad you do this because no one else does. It’s like Siri is completely forgotten by most of the tech people and I don’t look to see or hear a mention of Siri at the coming Apple event. I don’t know why it is expected to wait until iOS 18 for any remedial work. Perhaps after iOS 17 actually comes out there will be more additions. Meanwhile, thank you very much.

I’ve wanted for some time to ask Siri to enable or disable cellular access for specific apps. I use the podcast app and typically leave cellular disabled. Occasionally I thought an episode downloaded that didn’t and I am willing to use data for that. But, I never need that unless I’m in the car driving, making it too late to stare at my phone and dig into the settings. I equate Siri having access to settings to a necessary safety feature.

  • @laurenschwamb

3:09 I’m glad apple put that in so that Siri would know if we’re talking to her or not. It frustrates me that Amazon Alexa can’t do that. In my house we’ll sometimes talk about our Amazon Alexa. Well if we said “I’m glad Alexa…” she would think we were talking to her and say a random thing in response so now we just call her “What’s her name” when referring to her. Glad we don’t have to do that with Siri.
Funny story kinda related. One time I was listening to an audiobook in my room. One of the characters was named ALEXIS (pretty sure) and so my Alexa kept thinking it was talking to her. I know this won’t happen with Siri because I don’t know anyone besides Siri herself who has the same name, but I’m glad Apple made sure she won’t respond when talking about her

For me, 'Remind me about this' works on iOS 16, but only via my HomePods. For example, I have the webpage or email I want reminding about on my phone, say 'Hey Siri, remind me about this tomorrow" my nearest HomePod will respond and confirm that it'll remind me tomorrow. I can then check the reminders on my phone and it'll be there. If I trigger Siri on my phone and ask, it'll give the same response as in the video and not be able to do it.

I think Siri cannot be compared to Bard or ChatGPT in general. Siri is meant to control apps on our Apple Devices more than anything else. And frankly, neither Bard nor ChatGPT can do this or control my homekit devices. However, I think general questions and context-based questions or two commands at the same time / combined commands like "Turn on the light and dim to 50%" should be an easy job. I miss these little things in Siri. But I am sure that Apple with handle this sooner or later... :-) Great Video anyway and not a big surprise that Apple only comes up with very small improvements....unfortunately...

A quick tip, the most important device which is actually stupid is that HomePods don't do back to back requests yet, you have to invoke Siri every request, so now I have set up my iPad Pro on a stand working on the "siri" command and left the HomePod to listen for Hey Siri so I can control my Apple TV, the iPad Pro quite happily processes multiple command like the phone.

Thanks for making this video. I'm always curious to see what progress Apple has made with Siri because it is *so* far behind both its competition and the expectation that Apple set for a digital assistant in the Apple ecosystem by using mantras like "it just works" and "magical experience"; and this has been true for *so* many years that I've just about lost hope that Apple will (can?) close this huge gap in capability. And as your video demonstrates, yet again Apple disappoints with useful but meager incremental updates that help only in singular use cases rather than imbuing Siri with real intelligence that improves the overall experience across the ecosystem. What a huge multi-year lost opportunity and a real shame. If Siri were a large part of why I bought an iPhone, I would have stopped buying them years ago.
Just as an example of what I mean, try this: I wonder how Siri of iOS17 would respond to "define tender"? Does it ask you 9 times if you "want to hear the next one?"

Siri is still awful in terms of recognizing what I’m saying, and reading text aloud. Can’t seem to distinguish between street addresses and plain old numbers. Example 5113 Main Street becomes five thousand one hundred thirteen main st (doesn’t even make the abbreviation into the correct word at times). Phone numbers are Aldo beyond its ability to understand at times. For these reasons alone, and others, I can’t reliably use it for much of anything. Ask it to read a text message and “you’ll have to unlock your iPhone for that”. I’m driving and using my  watch. Useless imo

More seriously, I heard that Apple has already invested $20 billions+ on IA! Is this true?

Siri in iOS 16 is deaf or the dictation in Spanish has been compromised, it worked much better years ago, maybe is a problem of the iPhone 13 and 14 microphones, but the overall experience is worse than before, you must speak to Siri as to a 3 years old baby in order not to mess up the transcription. Not to mention with iOS 16 Siri stop working with car's bluetooth (unless you have carPlay). So iOS 16 Siri is the worst Siri ever. Hope 17 version solve this problems. I'm using Siri just to set timers, I guess Siri is a very expensive tool for just this little help.

I really think Siri should be updated. It's really a bummer when compared to real AI, how stupid Siri actually is. I could imagine this would improve the whole experience along your Apple devices if Siri is improved. Especially the HomePod would benefit from this as in its current state, it's more or less not that useful. Another thing I would like to get changed with Siri is the way it reads announced notifications that are in another language than the device language. They at least updated this recently, so it would not automatically read the notification if it's not in the device language, but it would be great if Siri would switch to the message language to read it out properly

Siri is so useless I don’t even use it. The times I need Siri is when I absolutely need hands free. Being given a bunch of websites or being told I can’t do that while your driving makes Siri completely unfit for purpose. Siri is certainly not a hands free assistant, in which case there is no point using it. The other thing is it still can’t recognise your voice which means half the time you need to pick up the phone to unlock it as well.
This must be common opinion as I don’t in fact know a single person who uses Siri.

Apple launch new software versions with massive fanfare but most of the time deliver little of real value. Their updates are evolution and not revolution.
As an example there are so many videos out there saying how great the latest TVos is, but the highlight? You can now have 5 icons on the top menu bar instead of 4. 🤦🏼‍♂️
Unfortunately the Siri improvements look to be of a similar level.
    Ah well.

EndoftheRoad-I agree with the senior who wished they could use Siri to search in Settings. But that could be the start of something much bigger as the prior comment about AI implies. Why not use Apple data internally along with a specialized large language model and machine learning to give Siri the ability to be a CUI, or Conversational User Interface. This would be typical Apple, taking prior, proprietary IP and extending it with new technology to innovate something better. What do you think?

I really believe you don’t truly understand how Siri works and how it responds. Also, most of your requests are not common daily needs for average users. Unfortunately, this is the first video of yours I don’t like because it seems to me like you didn’t do enough research to do it justice. I’m using iOS 17 and it is soooooo much smarter in so many ways you missed, like continuing a conversation effectively through context and interaction.

@@ProperHonestTech Hey Tom, thanks for replying and sorry for the negative reply. We often reply based on how we’re feeling that day. Most frequent iOS users know that before we had to be very specific, and almost robotic when making a request. Now, with iOS 17, we can be a little more human. Here are some examples from my experience:
      - I personally use Reminders very often, almost daily, and before, if I asked something like: “remind me to do blank at 3pm” pronouncing it too flat, Siri would create a reminder with the whole enunciated phrase with no time set to it, stead of “Do blank” set to 3pm. Now it not only understands me really well, but it also understands context of the request stead of just what was said.
      - In previous OSs, if I mispronounced a word and tried to correct it mid sentence, especially for Reminder requests, it would almost always make a mistake on the request or even worse, reply saying it did not understand what I said. Haven’t had that problem in iOS 17 so far, which means it is way smarter at understanding how humans talk and as users we don’t have to be so robotic.
      - If I made a big enough pause mid-request, Siri would often stop listening and not understand what I wanted. I noticed that now, Siri understands pausing mid request a lot better and silently continues to listen for a while longer till you gather your thoughts to continue it.
      - I can make several questions about the same subject in a roll with no physical interactions. I use this very often to find out more info about a public figure. Not only that, but seems to understand international names a lot better too.
      - It also understands the context of requests a lot better like it understands what you’re trying to ask for before concluding it, connecting and gathering information from multiple native and some 3rd party apps (like WhatsApp and CZcams)
      - English isn’t my first language, and although I speak like a native, because of switching between my mother language and English, sometimes my accent may be thicker, but I notice Siri almost never, to never, misunderstands me when that happens.
      - Because I use two languages to type often and I live in Brazil, making a request to take me somewhere or create a reminder/event for example, often requires me to use Portuguese words/names. I’m deeply impressed at how well Siri understands it in iOS 17 now. It’s almost like it can understand both languages simultaneously, which is not technically a feature atm.
      - It’s not yet perfect, but one request I made to Apple several times through the past few years was to make Siri reply in the same speech volume as me, meaning, if I whisper a request in a very silent environment, it should be more aware and know to whisper back stead of replying in full volume. That isn’t a feature yet, but I noticed it doing it from time to time, like last night I asked Siri for an alarm and a reminder in a very low voice and it replied in the same volume. It wasn’t a whisper but it was very low. But just before getting into bed I also made a request in a higher volume and it replied in the same volume. I did not change the volume in between these two interactions. I tried it today and it did not work, but it seems like they’re working on it.
      - I always call my dad using WhatsApp Video as he does not have an iPhone. Yesterday I asked Siri saying only “Video call Dad” and Siri for the first time asked me back before continuing “Do you wanna use WhatsApp?”, which means it is becoming aware of apps I use and for what. The most interesting part is it didn’t ask “Do you wanna use Whatsapp or FaceTime?” It only asked if I wanted to use WhatsApp. So it is aware I only use WhatsApp to call my dad.
      - It seems to understand variations of a requests with the same context. Before we would typically ask Siri “Do I need an umbrella today?” But now I can ask “Do I need to get ready for rain today?” Or “Is it raining where I’m going tonight?”. This last one is very interesting because it is now aware I have and event with a location set later tonight and it gives me the answer based on that location stead of where I am and I checked it was correct. The weather for where I was and where I was going were different and it knew.

Yes, it's less intelligent than ChatGPT or Bard, but you left out that all of what's happening with Siri is happening directly on the device itself. It's not sending the queries off to a distant server. What this means is Siri is vastly more private than ChatGPT or Bard could ever hope to be.
