    Another great video TechDweeb, you do a great blend of info and humour. As you said these drives are great but not for the OCDers among us, they will work "out the box" but contain duplicates, even found some on BIG roms, so you are literally freeing up GBs, coupled with countless Japanese language games which in most cases are hard to play, to say the least! All this means you have some work ahead, but hey part of the fun ; ) Got a Batocera drive at Xmas, but then also started a separate Retrobat build on my own drives, so that the Batty drive is now essentially a backup, but also allows a non windows boot if you want it. Going ahead though i can see Retrobat being the preferred option, and it is a lot easier starting base then Launchbox, etc. These drives are not just for nostalgia either, as my OG Xbox no longer reads discs and my dreamcast works when IT wants to, so my collection is gathering dust, so this way i can once again enjoy Kung Fu Chaos or hunt for sailors in a Japanese town ; ) Keep up the good work Dweeb! next stop 100k

      Thanks buddy. Yeah the only way to get a good rom collection is to make it yourself. Hand pick your rom sets and save your collection. I think one of the benefits for these emulation consoles & drives is that you don't have to download anything, I think lots of people buy them just to get the roms because they don't want to have to deal with getting them on their own.

    Over the last week i've been building a Retrobat built onto a 4tb internal hard drive mounted on a docking station. Been using Batocera before and got bored with having to boot up via 'recovery options' or changing the boot order. Found out about Retrobat after watching one of your wonderful, entertaining and informative video's Techdweeb and the build is coming on really well. Now adding the big stuff like PS3 and Xbox360, 2tb isn't nearly enough if you want to include these and big libraries of Wiiu, Wii, PS2, Gamecube etc

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Před rokem +4

      Yeah I think we get spoiled when we have a collection of ALL the snes or n64 or whatever games, but then realize we can only have like 10% of the library of gamecube and ps2 and xbox at the same time. I'm sure in the near future we'll all have 100tb HDDs and gigabit internet and will laugh at these primitive days when we couldn't download an entire gamecube romset and slap it on our drive in just a few minutes.

    I purchased a different hard drive that ran on Retrobat, and I had issues with no sound on systems that ran under RetroArch. Games running under standalone emulators such as Gamecube and PSP ran fine and sounded great, but Genesis and Vectrex were muted, even though I didn't see my system muted anywhere. I just watched this video. Coated with the glorious aura of the TechDweeb, I returned to my half sound/half muted monstrosity for another go. Turns out that I needed to go into RetroArch while Retrobat was running (any game is fine), and I set the audio driver to dsound. I saved the configuration, and voila! Glorious sound! Now I did run a Gamecube game, and then discovered the audio driver got somehow knocked back to xaudio (Hey!), but I changed it back to dsound for glorious Thunderforce II (Genesis) opening music. Love that game. You didn't have to help me with my issue, you only needed to share your presence. Love your channel, and especially your humor, which is why I'm providing my own tongue-in-cheek in my actual experience. Oh, one other thing. My system (Beelink GTR5 5900HX mini) seems to run Gamecube/PS2 better under Batocera than Win11.

Needed a bit of tinkering, and I did go through and delete a lot of the copies, but it wasn't so bad, especially since I could have a techdweeb video on and while deleting the copies lol. I LOVE that you can "random" the games, and find games I never thought of, or even having a friend over, and then having them random the systems and then the games and then they HAVE to play that game for a little bit haha. Very excited to see your channel growing! I really appreciate how you deliver content and you have quickly become one of my favorite content creators. I am curious about your take on a few things.
    1.) If cost was no issue what single controller would you get to pair with the JM gaming hard drive you revieiwed? Also with that have you tried other brand wireless controllers VS USB controllers?
    2.) Have you considered a preferences/setup/tweak video as far as settings that you use for each console?
    3.) In lieu of the harddrive mentioned above, what handheld do you consider to be the best balance of performance and value (ideally with video output)?
    Particularly related to number 3 I have been looking into getting another handheld (got the RG35XX largely in light of your reviews for it) and am looking for something that could comfortably go up to the GC era to where it can still be portable but I can easily plug it into an external display.

      1. A really nice xbox controller. I've heard good things about other controllers (like the 8bitdo pro2 controller), but I can't say from experience because I don't have them. I think the official Xbox one/series controllers are great quality and work great on pretty much any device.
      2. Good idea! I'm going to do an emulation station beginner guide, that would probably be a good idea to add.
      3. Probably the RP3+. I love several other handhelds for various reasons, but the RP3+ is the king of price/performance. Gamecube isn't perfect, about 20% of the games won't play well, but the next best option would be something like the Odin and that's much more expensive. We get a lot of power on the RP3 + considering the price.

As a proof of concept I made a pendrive with a bootable FreeDOS environment and filled it with lots of DOS shareware titles and game demos. The challenge was to make something completely legal contentwise (for those who care about this) and just to have a fun time in the office after hours.

    Incredible. As I commented on the Batocera drive video, having this pre-set up and the ability to add your own roms (or swap regions) is absolutely amazing. The thing holding me back there was the boot requirement, and being unable to stream it to my RP3+. But with this on Windows, I imagine it should be a simple setup to get it running on Moonlight!!
    I am a little bummed that it is a HDD, and not a SSD - to keep price down I am sure. Did you experience any loading issues or excessive noise on it? Might be possible to copy the image to a mobile SSD. This is just an awesome device, and great gift idea, perfect for taking on the go. Thank you so much for the review!!

      Actually. If you wish clone the HDD to an SSD or clone any drive, I highly recommend Macrium Reflect. It's free! It has helped me in all my PC builds with Windows. I used it for backups for all the PCs in the house from the gaming to the editing to the office ones. And I also use it to copy over my gaming and recordings.
      Only issues I've had where when copying over my all in one solution 4tb drive that's portable with multiple different programs, games, and videos files to a 6tb enterprise HDD. Instead of corrupting my files by just doing the automated copy. It just sent a "this won't work" every time. Which is good for the program. Yet when I was doing it manually one by one(which tool 3 days!), I had corrupted OBS recordings of shows that wouldn't copy over.
      So, I recommend Macrium Reflect if you ever want to copy any drive on windows or any windows os. It even has the ability to fix corrupted drives which I've done a couple of times, yet don't remember which forum I got the help from.

      There is no "build", this is literally a cheap harddisk in an USB enclosure and all that's on it can be found for free online. We all know about ROM piracy but even selling the Open Source frontend and emulators is a violation. It amazes me that people are willing to pay for this kind of stuff

    • @A5h3n.
      @A5h3n. Před rokem +1

      @@MrJonline It takes forever to set up and download every game. There's also setting up certain games to run properly. Getting PS3 games to work for the first time will take hours for the uninitiated. I'd pay for a custom build but I'd make sure someone actually went through and configured it. It would also need to be at least 5tb or over so I won't feel the need to buy another drive with almost all the same games in it.

    • @gregghernandez2714
      @gregghernandez2714 Před rokem

      @@MrJonline When I say build, I mean that these emulation hard drives need to be built, starting with the front end, then adding the emulators. It can take forever to add these games that number in the thousands. I don't have any problems buying these hard drives. In my lifetime, I have bought a a couple of Dreamcast consoles, A Wii Console, A PlayStation 1 and 2 an Xbox an Xbox 360, and I can't even begin to tell you how much I spent on both DOS and Windows games for my PCs in the past. Not to mention how much I spent on graphics cards and hard drives.Believe me, Nintendo, Sony, MSI, Nvidea and Microsoft has made plenty of money (thousands) off of my hobby as a gamer.

    • @MrJonline
      @MrJonline Před rokem

      @@gregghernandez2714 I guarantee you there is no "build". Even the video addresses this when he talks about the uncurated roms selection. This is literally "thrown" together and as for configuration there is no "one size fits all" since the end-users have different system anyway. You probably need to tweak a few things yourself anyway depending on your system and GPU. PS3 emulation nowadays is super easy. Hunting the roms if you know the right spot are mostly 1 click downloads for complete collections for cartridges, but maybe separated in parts when it comes to huge media like blurays. Things like Batocera and Retrobat are simple installs that contain all your needed emulators. You just point to your rom/iso folders and all gets added and scraped automatically. It's not the ROM piracy that bugs me, it's the fact they sell Open Source software that others worked on for free. It would not be the first time a great emulator got shut down by the dev(s) because some random is making huge profits on those and that's bad for us the end-user no matter if your a pirate or legally backup your game. This harddisk is just an off the shelve disk and a simple copy paste job. Why you think the PS3 emulator had to be hidden? It's because NO work went into this and it's slapped on as an afterthought to quickly fill some space.

But sorting and adding missing games will still take you a full 5/6 weeks of work. Of the 74k "games" on batocera around 37500 are left. These disks seem to be made with rom dumps. Having an external hard drive dedicated to emulation sounds more convenient to me since most of my favorite games are available inside the drive. Granted that there are game systems that I'm not familiar with such as Amiga, C64 & ZX Spectrum because those were unknown to Asian citizens like me. I would definitely replace duplicates, crappy games & ports as well as sport games (except for a few such as Madden 08, NBA Street series, SSX Tricky, Rumble Roses, NHL 2K8, WWE SvR 2007 etc) with overlooked & hidden gems + Japan-exclusive titles (Sega Ages 2500 collection particularly Virtual On & Fantasy Zone + Bulk Slash etc).

What's worse, it's totally capable of emulation as well as watching your videos... at the same time! What's this awesome device you ask? Why, it's our humble phones of course! You know when we upgrade our phones and buy a fancy new one and then we leave the old one somewhere in a box alone and forgotten? Well, I believe we need a guide on how to turn these old phones to portable emulation power..things! Why not go even further? I would love to have this though. The Batocera model you showed isn't available on Amazon Canada. Otherwise I'd scoop that up. Due to having a high end gaming laptop now, the fact it comes loaded with newer PC games is definately appealing, making it more of an "all-in-one" for me.
    Unless there's a way to snag the Batocera model you reviewed, in Canada. This actually would be a good fit for emulating consoles. I've been into emulation and making my own builds since the early 2000's. But... lol I'm kind of bored/tired with setting stuff up from scratch over the years. So I've been looking more into "plug-and-play" drives like this for myself. While still making emulation devices for others.

    I ordered this game drive but it didn't include any instructions. How do you pause the game? How do you return to main menu while playing a game? Also having to use a PS3-4 controller to play the older games definitely sucks. Honestly I prefer to just play the older games (Genesis, NES, SNES,) on their console with the original controllers. I have a PS2 with lots of the SNK, Arcade, Taito collection discs to play the older games in hi-res, and this seems superior to using this game drive. Other problem is that this system frames each game with a fake tube-tv looking surround which cuts off the left and right sides of some games.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Před rokem

      Select + one of the face buttons (usually A, but try them all) to pause the game and open the Retroarch menu. Select+Start to exit the game. You can disable the TV frame by pressing start at the system selection screen, going to 'games settings', and set "decoration" to "none". If that doesn't work then you'll need to open up the 'advanced system options' for each system individually (press select when you have the games list for that system open), and turn off the decorations from that menu. Enjoy!

(check the drive folders to see if there is an empty ROMS directory). If that's the case then you can move your roms over to the new directory. If you can't figure that out then a simple solution would be to reinstall retrobat, just download the retrobat installer from the website and install it on your drive (install it to a unique directory). Then you can move your rom files from the old directory to the new one. Sorry I can't give you an easy answer, there might be an easy answer for you if you ask on r/emulationstation.
