  • I review the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500 3.0L LM2 Duramax Diesel engine's drivability. Does this engine drive well on the road? I give you guys my opinion as a heavy duty diesel mechanic if I think this 3.0 Duramax engine drives well on the road
    First Duramax Review - • Chevy Silverado 1500 3...
    As promised I go to the GMC/ Chevrolet dealership and take a spin in the 3.0 Duramax Diesel. I give you guys my honest first impression when driving this diesel truck. as I mentioned a couple times in the video I'm really just reviewing how the truck feels to drive.
    Two things I liked about this Chevy 1500 Duramax
    - I liked the throttle response, this diesel feels like it has lots of torque right away which is exactly what you want. power seems great at those low rpms and I think that's going to translate into great drivability.
    - the second thing I really liked about the 3.0 Duramax was the position of the turbo. It's smack dab right in the middle of the engine and very easy to work on. other engines like the 6.7 Duramax with a v8 have the turbo buried in the engine bay making it hard to service.
    Two things I did not like about the GMC 1500 Duramax
    - I did not like the fact that the 10 speed Allison transmission kept downshifting whenever you put your foot down. I wish the engine would of spooled up more in the higher gear and really got into boost but the transmission does shift well.
    - I don't like the noise. this diesel is too quiet for me I wish it sounded louder but I feel like most people will like it quiet!
    Overall guys this truck drove very well. I think anyone who buys these engines will enjoy them and have a good long engine life!

    In January this year I got the 2021 Sierra 1500 Elevation extended cab 4WD X31 with duramax. I love this truck. Drives so well, l love the low end torque hence acceleration, in the cabin it so quiet and smooth. Great power on the low end, much less on the high end. I had a 2016 F150 3.5 ecoboost previously and that truck was probably the fastest stock truck I have drove but struggled to even average 17mpg's. Not sure about that shifter. Mine is the 2020 silverado and it's got the classic column shifter so not a problem. Also with almost 50k miles on it the sound has started to get a bit louder which I like. I appreciate the quiet but now that it's breaking in the sound has come alive. As far as 10 speed is concerned the 2020 silverado had a few different drive modes and the sport mode does prevent that shifting until it gets between 4-5k rpm so you get that full turbo spool.

      NOTES ON SEATING: The seats on the 1500 GMC/Silverado are really the same, "bench" vs. "buckets" if you look at the details the difference is in the center seat/console section....the bench seat config 40/20/40 split bench uses the same "seats" as the "bucket seat" option only the consoles are different, buckets give you the fancy console with the console shifter and the bench 40/20/40 setup gives you a basic console (no shifter) BUT secondary storage BELOW the fold down center seat back

      Here where I live diesel is within $0.50 of regular 87 and I get at min 10mpg better then if my truck had the 6.2 gas which is the only other engine option that could be had in a Denali Ultimate. I average about 28mpg and best I have got is 37.5. I have never even got those numbers in a car before. If I had the 6.2 it would probably get on average around 18 I am assuming and best I would ever see is probably 23-25. Gas prices skyrocketed earlier this year and diesel prices stayed the same basically here too so diesel was almost the exact same price for a couple months as regular 87. It uses so little fuel its probably been a month since I even filled it up and I still have a half tank. Diesel always used to be cheaper then gas but in the last 15 or so years diesel has been more expensive. Before I left town 87 was right around $3 and diesel was like $3.40 range. I know it varies some gas stations I saw as high as $4.99 for diesel which makes no sense since the gas station down the street its $1.50 cheaper lol. I like to buy at Costco but the Costco only has 87 and premium they don't sell diesel. They only sell top tier fuels though. I think you should stick to reviewing 2000's loud obnoxious ford's. You contradicted yourself a couple times on torque and power. This engine is a solid option for everyone. It gives you power, fuel economy and towing capabilities. The turbo is not a regular turbo either hence no lag. It's a twin scroll turbo. Also your opinion of it "upshifts" to fast is the opposite of what people would say is bad. If the transmission lags to shift people would say it's broken.

      2021 owner. My manual recommended the first 500 miles at 55mph and lower with varying speeds. If I remember that was in the diesel engine supplement not in the regular truck manual. I did a bit over 6000 miles towing a 7500 lb travel trailer this past summer. 13 mpg That’s about what I expected. At 55 - 60 mph not towing I’ll get between 26-30 mpg. Towing that tall trailer cuts my mpg almost exactly in half. It did close to that with the 5.3 gasser I previously owned. Unladen the 5.3 would get around 22 mpg. Put that trailer back there and 8-10 mpg was doing good. I could move that to 11 by driving at 55 mph in the 5.3. The diesel got the 13 running 65 mph with perhaps 1/4 of the drive at 70 mph.

    People actually buy this truck? It’s not all that bad, but when you have a choice between the Duramax, the Power Stroke, or the Cummins, why settle for the one that finishes third? All the manufacturers have had problems, but not at the level of GM and the Duramax. Good luck and make sure you get the longest extended warranty that they offer.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Před rokem

      I mean I wont disagree with you. But I think this engine has some potential. 3 years no the road and no major issues which is pretty damn good for a modern diesel. obviously if you have the money and are looking at a 2500. A cummins is the gold standard.

    • @v8chevy788
      @v8chevy788 Před rokem +4

      There is no Cummins available in a RAM 1500. From the 1500 diesel engine options, this 3.0 Duramax is closest in design to the Cummins being that it is an inline 6. The Ford and RAM 1500 diesels were V6 designs. Notice that I said "were" as they are no longer being offered so if you want a 1500 diesel, this is your only option and it is a fantastic engine.

    • @BrianKrahmer
      @BrianKrahmer Před rokem +2

      a Duramax is not a Duramax! the 3.0 was designed mostly by the German division of GM, Opel. The 6.7 was a joint-engineering effort with Isuzu. So completely different engines with completely different missions. I wished there were efficient small diesel trucks for 15 years before they finally came out. I now have a '21 Sierra averaging about 32mpg running around, and i love it.
