  • The updates Tiguan is here and VW wants to raise the bar for 2022. On the outside you will discover new LED headlights, grill, front fascia and wheels. On the inside there is an 8in infotainment system, digital gauge cluster, and new leather seating. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that produces 184HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Getting power to the ground is VW's 4Motion AWD system. Is the NEW 2022 VW Tiguan R Line a BETTER compact SUV than a Mazda CX-5?

    I've got a '21 VW Tiguan SE R-Line Black and I live in Colorado. I take this rig up skiing 20+ times a year and it has no problem climbing the huge hills around here. It is fast and handles incredibly well. The torque comes in at 221 pound feet and that's what is most important when you're looking to climb. Also, it has a "Snow" setting as a part of the Mode Selector and it does a great job of planting you on the road in icy/snowy/scary as hell conditions. I can't speak to the CX-5 although I do like the looks of it.

    I own a 2019 Tiguan SEL Premium R-Line. Excellent vehicle, technology and comfort. However, at this price point it should have a more powerful engine. My Tiguan is a solid car and the 4Motion system saved us when we were visiting Texas during the snow storm on March 2021.

    Speaking to a Mazda dealer the 2022 Cx5 won’t be available until mid 2022. So can’t compare same model years yet. I’ve driven the 2021 high end Cx5 a lot because my relative owns one. I ended up buying the 2022 Tiguan, but you can’t go wrong with either. Mazda has a sporty appearance, whereas the VW has restrained elegance. Mazda is much faster 0 to 60. I live in Chicago and even merging on the expressway you would rarely use the extra performance. The Mazda infotainment system is clunky and not particularly intuitive. VW’s is the opposite and I like how it’s built in rather than sticking out of the dashboard. You noticeably ride higher in the VW and it has more ground clearance ,which is a benefit in a Chicago winter. VW has much more cargo space. My choice would be different if I could actually use Mazda’s extra performance and I didn’t need the extra cargo space. You really can’t go wrong with either choice.

      It's crazy that they won't install a GTI engine. That would fix the HP issue easily. On the other hand, their rival Mazda doesn't have a touch screen? That's nuts. The industry is moving towards those permanently so Mazda is still behind the times.

    Raiti does such a great job. Added info for anyone from a family that owns both the Tiguan SE 4motion (me) and CX-5 Touring (wife). I think both are great for different reasons. This will be more functional and not performance based. Tiguan seems to be geared for taller individuals which I appreciate. I'm 5' 11", and it fits great for me. On the other side, my wife is 5' 5". She dislikes the center console, and how far she has to have the seat forward. That sort of makes the center console useless for resting an arm. The CX-5 is just about opposite. She fits great in it, and I fill slightly cramped. We have a toddler and newborn. With the mid-row, both accomplishes having car seats. The difference comes when I actually have to sit up front. With car seats, I have to have the seat as far forward as I physically can with knees in dash. This is more pronounced with rear facing car seats. The Tiguan is deceptively 'big' and allows for for more room and storage. We never travel with the CX-5 and opt for the Tiguan especially adding in our 2 labs. The Tiguan is definitely better for larger families/individuals. My wife loves the CX-5 outside of the space. We are looking to change vehicles for her. Just thoughts I had that I don't see from alot of reviews.

    Just bought this VW Tiguan R Line, waiting for it to arrive. Test drove the CX-5, the Santa Fe, and this one. It's for my wife, who doesn't care about 0-60 times. I found, from a pure driving perspective, the 8-speed auto was a superior ride to the CX-5, which was not as smooth on the shifting, and had more road noise. This trim is the ONLY VW trim that compares to what Hyundai and Kia have done, when it comes to gadetry and toys. To me, it was a toss-up between the CX and Tiguan, and just went with my wife's preference. Both great cars.

    Display more justice. You can transfer it from the eight in h screen to Infront of the driver on the odometer screen and just have it in the center of that screen or full screen! Heated steering wheel. Side mirrors flo's in when the vehicle is turned off. Keyless entry from anywhere runs off the Satellite, hotspot wifi anywhere. Anti-theift tracking your cars position. Shape of the steering wheel makes for better handling. Cargo mat. Stow away cargo cover. So you don't have to put it in the garage just lift up and stow down with the spare tire. The most important thing are the little wing windows in the front two doors which really opens up you visuals on the road forward making a much better clear view. So much you left off this review on this car. No I'm not a seller. Actually just recently had my 2019 Honda CR-V elx stolen from a parking garage. I've shopped every SUV out there. I have mine on hold awaiting for insurance payoff. I can't wait to take it home! 😀

    Nice review as always and also great camera work Lori! This vehicle is nice! Love the steering wheel, two toned seats and wheels which looks better than the new 2022 Mazda Two toned wheel. However very few compact suv interiors can compete with Mazda’s interior, in fact I can’t think of any non luxury off the top of my head. Not impressed with the VW 184 HP. I love that it’s an 8 speed automatic which makes Mazda’s look dated, but since it works well and Mazda knows how to create and make things work well, it’s more impressive than it sounds. I love the panoramic sun roof, it creates a great driving experience. I do think this particular trim should at least be 205HP. In conclusion I’d still go with the new Mazda 2.5 turbo with 256hp, it’s packed with power and a smooth driving experience and it translates really well in the driving experience. Clearly I’m partial to Mazda. 😎

    My old 1990 Cadillac Seville had a hydraulic hood prop… 30 years later companies are still using manual hood props.
    Absolutely love the styling of this one, VW has always done well with their styling all the way around but they really need to get away from the fake exhaust and intakes, but worse is their anemic engines.

      What I don't understand is why the Euro-market Tiguan had a different exterior than the North American version. I liked the Euro spec one, the lines looked cleaner and more high tech. Even the fog lights were different (PS: am describing a 2018-2019 model).

    • @DrKnowsMore
      @DrKnowsMore Před 10 měsíci

      MPG controls are the reason that engines have gotten smaller. As for hydraulic hood props, well they tend to fail and can cause injury. Most manufacturers decided to do away with the liability. Besides, MOST people aren't under the hood and if you are the type to get under the hood, then using a manual prop is the least of your headaches.

    The Tiguan is not as underpowered as some make it sound, it definitely pulls harder than a non turbo cx5, the turbo cx5 is a more powerful engine but its not enough to be krazy excited about, the mazda is small and crampy (I'm 6'2") and does not give you the engagement feeling that the Tiguan does, its way more fun to drive. The Tiguan should have more power but it doesn't, its a suv not a race car and it gets 30+ mpg all day long. No way in hell would I buy the Mazda over the VW!!

    The decision to go with either vehicle was so difficult. Each suv has its positives. the Mazda is faster, slightly more comfortable, and has more features while the VW has a panoramic sunroof, and slightly more space.

    • @2004cyrus
      @2004cyrus Před 2 lety +11

      I disagree slightly. I actually have a 2019 Tiguan and I have just added a Mazda CX-5. They are both good in their own right but I would say the seats are far more comfortable for my body than the Mazdas, like the Tiguan seats are better than almost everything else I’ve driven. But, my Mazda has real leather, parchment in color and the seats are beautiful. My Tiguan has black V-Tex leatherette and not as attractive. The ride on my Tiguan is much more smooth and soft whereas the CX-5 is shorter so it’s not so softly sprung over bumps and potholes. These are just my subjective opinions of course: the Mazda has the sportier ride as you said. I like a lot of things on the Tiguan, it’s 11 longer too so the cargo area and 2nd row is much more roomy. I’m happy with both.
