  • Puppy Training - How To Potty Train A PUPPY In 5 Minutes!
    How to potty train your puppy at home? House training your puppy takes time and management. In this puppy training video, Tom Davis gives you 5 Tips to potty train your new puppy!
    A lot of the puppies that I work with are paid through verbal cues. However, one important thing I try to tell my clients is, if your dog is already depending on food or is already working for food in a really enthusiastic way, I do not want to suppress any of that. I encourage people to work with their dog in a very low-stress or no-stress way. So, if your dog is working for food, or if you continue to work with food, I want to keep the enthusiasm.
    So what you want to do is give positive reinforcement with verbal cues and then add in the food as the cherry on top every other time, or every third time or fourth time. This will enforce the behavior, to say hey good job, but making sure that the dog will do it without the currency. Because once they are dependent on the food, you’re actually not teaching the dog anything.
    So ask yourself, if you’re working with the trainer or you’re training by yourself, will your dog actually do the behavior if you don’t have the reinforcement involved? If you do not have a treat, will your dog actually listen to your command? If they will, great your dog knows the behavior, and if they won’t, then that means you need to restructure some things.

    Two weeks ago, I brought home a puppy that someone had dumped with all her stuff. We've been struggling with potty training even though I know what to do because I'm fighting some major depression. We've had a lot of accidents, but I figure we'll get there eventually. And hopefully my depression will improve now that the first anniversary of my mother's passing is here (May 27th).
    I wasn't prepared for a puppy, didn't want a puppy, didn't need a puppy. But I'm glad I was there to be her hero. She's a good girl and we'll manage through thick and thin.

    Thank you for this help. Six weeks into adopting a rescue pit bull puppy and we still haven't got potty training down. Accidents still occur daily because I've been letting him guzzle water to his heart's content. And this gentle giant can put it away. Blue has easily doubled in size every single week since 12/25/23, the day I was blessed with him. Going to be able to do better by him now that I know better.

    They way I’ve done is when it’s time to eat it’s time to eat. If they don’t eat there food in 10 to 15 minutes the bowl is picked up and not given back until the next meal time. This does two things it shows you are in control of the food and that when it’s time to eat it’s time to eat

    We have been working with our 17 week old Cane Corso puppy on potty training, and in the beginning there were times it felt like she didn't know she even needed to go until it was coming out (mainly #2). It feels like it's gotten better as she gets older (we got her at 9 weeks). She's just starting to alert us to the need when it's time. I feel like it's sometimes an age/maturity component as well.

    This is almost exactly what we did with our puppy when bringing her home. Each morning when she woke up it was straight outside for a potty. Then a training session with her breakfast. Then another potty break. Then maybe some inside structured play or relax time depending on how she felt that day. Then another potty break and a crate nap when we needed it or when she got tired. This was the schedule for a couple of weeks until she didn’t potty in the house anymore. Naps in the crate, potty outside after, training, play, outside of crate sleeping if possible, crate again. Our dog was potty trained in under three weeks with this method. She has never had an accident again since then. Even with stays in many hotel rooms and with family we have never needed to worry since we had a fail proof method from the start.

    • @lauragibbons363
      @lauragibbons363 Před rokem +1

      This sounds great - how often were u taking her outside for the potty? Would u wake her up from her sleep when she was sleeping in the crate, I read somewhere to do that is it necessary?I love the schedule u had, did you do it to times also, as in did you train morn at 8am, 20 mins later go potty etc thanks getting new puppy in 3 weeks 😊

    • @miratraven5755
      @miratraven5755 Před rokem +6

      @@lauragibbons363 so glad you are finding my comment helpful. When she was napping we wouldn’t wake her up for a potty break. Instead we waited until she woke up and started moving around in her crate more. We then took her out to potty. For the question about training a meal times then out to potty I think we took her out within 5 minutes of finishing her mealtime.
      It can sometimes take a while before the dog potties. We used a method where if she didn’t potty within 10 minutes of being outside she got more crate time (about 15-20 minutes) and then we would give her another chance to potty. As I said this really worked for us and out dog. I hope it works for you and your puppy as well.
      Also make sure to train your puppy no matter the breed or size in obedience and household rules early on. It makes the world of difference.

I had great dogs growing up and my mom told me I should swat his ass and put his nose in it and throw them outside and I'm about to take her advice. I've been trying this new wave shit and I'm sure it works. If you don't have a job and you can walk your puppy every 30 goddamn minutes. Give me a break.

    I’ve always used the bell method, my dad did it with our first dog, a rottie. So I did the same but with my rottie but My chihuahua was always afraid of it, but did use it. We switched to buttons when he was 13yro & he caught on in just a few weeks! Unfortunately he passed 13 months ago. We have a puppy for about 5 weeks now. Previous fosters left pee pads covering the floor so he never had a designated spot. Brought him home & while waiting 1.5 weeks for vaccines to kick in we made 1 designated spot. Now we are aiming for outside by using the button, walking the backyard on a leash too. He will push it only when told. He has great days where he only has 1 accident in the house but nowhere near the pee pad (cut in half now for emergencies only). He has days where he will have 3-5+ accidents all over the house, even on his bed, today his kennel barely 1 hour after going outside. We make it uncomfortable when this happens. Sometimes he will go even 15-30 min after going outside (for no less than 10min). Very hot in texas. It has been 4 weeks of training to go outside & I can usually tell his wondering signs but his only real signals are sitting by the back door/occasionally barking but that happens when playing too. Im frustrated & at a loss. He does go outside frequently. We are currently home all day except short 1-2 hour trips so he goes outside constantly. At almost 4 months old I think he should be able to hold it longer than 15min-2 hours minimum. He was fixed at 8 weeks and the tube slipped causing a second incision on one side of his belly. I wonder if this could affect him? We do leave water & food out as he does not get enough if we restrict. He won’t even eat or drink in the morning unless you add wet food. He just goes back to sleep. Any advice?

    i took the tradition of my Grandpa and teach puppies to do their business (pee and poo) on old newspapers. This helps them also for the nights. They catch it easy and its easy to clean - and it´s also good for the case they had an operation and can not move. Mostly with the beginning of the 4th month they were 100% clean by their own. Thinking the new owners being afraid that their puppy could make pee or poo inside is what makes the situation tense and puppies insecure about it. Also not one of my dogs ever peed in a garden....the control of the water intake is an important point about their health. Everybody should know how much their dog drinks per day (depending of the food) and be able to report that to the vet in case of need

    Your video is incredibly helpful. I am fostering a very precious little puppy that was rescued from dallas animal services. Poor little baby head mange. That is healing up. I would love to be able to get him potty trained and set him up for success when he meets his forever family.

    Not “all puppies will eat and drink as much as you give them”. We open feed our Great Dane pup and he never finishes the food and water we provide in a single sitting. In fact, one bowl may last all day.

      That is common for Great Danes. But, they’ve ALWAYS got room for treats 😂

    I don't know if it's true (it sounds like an old wives tale), but always seemed to work for me, but the number of months old your puppy is is how many hours they can "hold it" once you've established that outside (or the pad or whatever) is where to go. So when you get them at 2 months old, that's 2 hours. so aside from your regular after meal potty training, make sure they go out again within 2 hours. 3 months is 3 hours, etc... I've always learned within month 3 what their puppy schedule is. So while I may take them out at 2 am for a bit, if they aren't doing it anything, but doing something at say 4am, I can skip the 2am one. And from there you can start playing around with the timing so hopefully you don't need to get up 2-3 times at night.
