Thank you so much! I just adopted a dog, and he was never house trained. I have been able to teach him to go outside. When I first brought him home, he was just going EVERYWHERE! I would take him outside and nothing. I started taking him outside every hour. Nothing was working. Then, my husband and I also started going outside, I know, it is gross, but it worked. He goes outside most times, but at night (I even take him outside before bed) he gets up and goes in one of two places in the house. If I happen to hear him up, I take him out, and that usually works. One more thing, he refuses to get up in the morning with my husband! He will only get up with me. So, I need to work on that. Thank you for all your help!

How about when your puppy is not allowed to go outside because he didnt finalised his vaccine scheme ?
We are about to welcome our puppy who will be 7-8 weeks old at that time. The vet told us that only 2 weeks after his last vaccine meaning only on 14 weeks old we can start taking him outside, until than we will need to teach him on a pad. How can you switch from a pad to outside ?

Trained my dog- no crate. Took a week or two. You have to diligently take them out. They’re going to mess up. They’ll eventually get it. Mostly you need some treats. Give your dog a yummy treat after they potty outside.

@@tooblessed573 I have an 11-week-old and she had a tough time at first. I resorted to hourly alarms on my watch and a little bag of training treats attached to the leash. I always take her to the same spot and we don't play when it's potty time. if she has an accident then I will still take her out afterwards even if she doesn't have to go. She is finally getting it so don't get discouraged in the beginning. it can take a few weeks but these dogs you see who are not effectively housebroken by a few months of age probably have misinformed owners.

I used a crate, a puppy play-pen and a leash. But the most successful part was taking her ball outside. She’d see it and I’d say potty as soon as she finished her biz I threw the ball. She learned that when she pottied she got to play. It was fast!

I use a cheap leash for puppies with a loop. I see it as umbilical cord and constantly have the leash in my hand or near me. This way I have total control and can notice every sign my puppy shows. I don't let my puppy run around freely. I started doing this in the 1980's, when I had a Rottweiler puppy and several small children. Potty training went so perfectly well, that I did this with all my other puppies and also worth my current puppy. With 17 weeks I start letting my puppy run free a little, but I keep him supervised when he goes about freely.
Also leash training is so much easier if you have your puppy on the leash at home also.
Staying together 24/7 for the first months, helps the bonding experience. Recall works perfectly outside as well, when my puppy is allowed to explore a field or grass areas when going on adventure walks together.
When potty training, I go outside so often that my puppy will only have accidents outdoors. I set him up for success by keeping him that close. The number of potty repetitions is so high that the puppy understands it even before being able to control his bladder, which happens around week 12. When my puppy is 13 to 14 weeks old, the puppy can go potty on command. My current puppy was able to do this with 12 weeks straight.
Of course I took him outside for potty time before and after sleeping, eating, an regularly in the rest of the time, starting with potty time every single hour. Meanwhile we go outside every 3 hours, and before and after sleeping and feeding. Until my puppy was 16 weeks old, I carried him outside when waking up, to prevent accidents from happening inside while walking to the house door.
My current puppy is the first winter puppy, which is both positive and negative: puppies go faster potty when their feet are cold and wet, so success happens fast, but every time we go outside, I have to dress up for the cold weather. So I sleep in jogging pants and put on a sweatshirt in the morning after waking up. All the other times I dress up more, as winter in Germany is cold.
I also go on extended adventure walks with my puppy and we make many breaks on some random benches, where my puppy can observe the changing environment with people, dogs, cars, etc. This way he gets acquainted to daily happenings, which helps with socialization.

I needed to take a minute out of my day to thank you so very much. You changed my life. I spent two days attached to my puppy keeping her in my room and not just free rain of my house. Those two days were rough I was using to treats reward her after she went potty and now I point say go potty and she knows exactly what I’m saying plus I learned her bladder times length before I just kept taking her out over and over not know when she needed to go and then she would have accidents on my floor when we got inside. Well being attached to her when I take her out I now know she needs to pee about every 20 mins and ever since it’s been smooth sailing. Thank you thank you thank you!

We watched this video and have been trying to teach our pupper, but was trained to pee in a box which he does well, but doesn’t want to pee outside. What can we do? We have trained him that when the leash goes on it’s time to potty, but instead will play around with leaves on the ground. Thank you for this video. I think my big mistake is not putting a leash on my puppy before getting them outside to poop/pee. It's an important cue that I've neglected since I have a fenced yard. I will start today, using a leash. Accidents inside are infrequent but they are still happening so as you say, "It's on me" to do the proper training. Another thing that helps
after cleaning up inside is to use "Nature's Miracle" in a spray bottle. It is an enzyme spray that breaks down the odor to discourage the puppy from using the same area again.

Susan, I can't thank you enough for this video, which I had watched numerous times before getting our 7 1/2 week old pup last weekend :). Today is day 5 and the only accident we've had is when I let my husband watch the pup for 2 seconds (he did NOT watch your video!)! I think you are the only trainer that has advised to NOT reward your pup after pee or poop (unless I misunderstood) and my little pup has been perfect (because I've made him successful!). He has a gated area outside that he goes to, on his own now, and relieves himself within seconds (poop takes a little longer). He is actually now heading and looking towards the back door to signal us (still inside ex pen of course).
Working on the earliest of stages in Crate Games and Puppy Games, but the one thing that has been a challenge is that he HATES the leash. Any time I pick it up he pulls like a crazy man. If you could do a podcast about starting to condition a puppy to be at least compliant on a leash, especially since you recommend that they wear one for training in the beginning. Or maybe I can figure it out, now that I think about it, maybe it has something to do with the collar grab game....but it sure would be helpful to have your guidance with an energy crazed puppy :) Thank you for all that you and your team do ;)

I'm working on this with my puppy to wean him off the puppy pads that the family used in the litter's playroom. I never really liked the idea of using pee pads because that's an extra step to housebreaking that seems to delay the process and it's always better to give dogs the idea that going to the bathroom outside is what's expected of them. He's had a few pee accidents because he really doesn't squat (and not old enough to start lifting his leg) so sometimes it is hard to tell if he's about to pee, but taking him out after he takes a nap, eats or drinks, plays vigorously, and in the morning after he's been in his crate has been working very well. Usually he pees as soon as he gets outside. He doesn't always poop, but I think he just has to pee alot more often than he needs to poop. So far he has had 0 poop accidents in the house. I think for being just weaned he's doing amazingly well!

I got a new puppy on Sunday and have been watching the puppy videos repeatedly. I have a question… My floors are hardwood and I’ve got her puppy pen setup in my living room. I’m wondering if I should put some washable rugs down for traction for her or wait until she’s more reliable with potty training? We’ve had one accident in 24 hours and it was obviously my fault cause I was blowing my nose.

Hi Susan! You mention that the puppy ideally will start going towards the door when they have to potty. I'm just curious about that, because most of my pups free time is in one of various "gated community" expens, so they would not be able to walk themselves to the door to outside. Do you think they will start sitting at the door to the expen? Or do you give your pups much more freedom in the house much sooner than I realized?

Eps sniffs in a small circle. Her tells are helpful. I trained potty on cue on lead with an old stable trick for cueing horses to pee. She has a specific whistle and she knows she has 1min to take any needed ablution before time is up.
Epsilon has this cue worked out and I am grateful it works on horses and dogs.

used my adult boxer to train my puppy, When she wanted to go out she stand at the door or comes and puts her head on my lap, if I ignore her which i don''t but wanted to see how she would react, She will give a slight bark wage her tail and turn her to her bum and look back at me. I used these to time my pup and made a big deal when he did his biz, ignored his accidents and just show him the door and said out. he now stands at the door for both.

Couple things I've had real success with is pair the successful trip out to pee with a word. 'Hurry up' comes pretty naturally to me as 'm stood out there at 6 a.m. freezing my butt off so that's what I use. First week I say it after she goes and I tell her 'good hurry up' or I simply say hurry up as soon as she starts to go. Like you said there's no messing about, no talk no play just get it over with so we can both get back in where it's warm (or cool or not raining or whatever.) By start of the second week the word seems to start meaning something to her so I say it as I ck my spot and stop walking. Not rrepeatedly, like you said I don't want to distract her. I also don't clean up after her first week or 2 so she's in no doubt what this spot is for.
Why I thin this is so good is later in life if I need her to do it in a weird place like at a noisy truck stop on concrete on a trip or on a little patch f astroturf in a hotel hallway or bathroom or something she's got a word queue as wel as al the other clues to help her get it. I had a Dobie who was so good about obeying this verbal queue she'd squat and really try, really strain anywhere if I just said the word. We called her our 'push-button pee-er.'
Thnx so much for sharing these podcasts, you've really helped me work through and refine some things I was having trouble understanding how to straighten out. Very glad I found you.

Hi, I love your videos! But pleaseeee help…
I brought my 8 week of cocker spaniel home yesterday. I know it’s early days but I want to set her up for success from day one but it’s not going well with toileting so far…
Ive tried taking her out on the leash but she just bites it so need to do more work with the leash.
We go outside and nothing. She wees as soon as we come back inside. So I feel my timing is right but only one wee outside so far and a lot of accidents inside… but I’ve remained zen. I put her in her crate when she doesn’t go but she screams and I don’t want her to develop a bad relationship with her crate. I feel at a loss, is it just persistence and consistency? Xx

Watching this video I realized that I have probably given our 10 week old pup too much space to explore while out for a potty break - so that's an easy fix. I do have a question - and you mentioned weather - but I do live in an area with every-changing and not always so pleasant weather (Newfoundland), especially in the winter and our so-called spring. What are your thoughts on training for outside and an indoor potty area (either a pee pad or a potty porch)? Am I inviting confusion or future challenges? Would love your insights.

Hi Susan. Great episode (as all your episodes). Do you have an idea for my puppy? He is now almost 8 month border collie. He is "clean" in the night and when I'm at work. But when I'm home, he is peeing and pooing in the house. Both when he is very playful, stressed or excited, but also when he is bored or not doing anything. Now he has begun lifting his leg like grown up male dogs... and this is a completely new party. Because now he can pee upon the sofa, the doors, the walls, the laundry basket ... yeah, pretty much everywhere. He is trained very close to how you say in your podcast. He has also been checked by the vet. I have other dogs, and this has never been a problem before. And now, I am pretty tired of pee and poop all over the house. Do you have an advice or idea I could try out? Thanks :-)

Yikes that sounds super frustrating. Best spray that is nontoxic, super cheap and easy to make that takes out the urine:
      10oz hydrogen peroxide
      1 tbs baking soda
      1 drop of dish soap
Mix and spray to cover the stain, let dry and then sometimes I’ll sprinkle baking soda on top to extra absorb before vacuuming.
      No more urine odor!

Hello! I need some advice on how to approach a shelter 5 month old puppy who has never gone potty outside before. I have tried every method you listed in this video but she will not relieve herself outside. She have tried waiting it out outside for hours. We’ve tried the back and forth, but the second we bring her inside she will find a place in the house to potty. If we put her in the crate and walk away she will just potty in there. I can’t praise her for going potty outside and teach her that it’s a good behavior because she has never, not once used the potty outside. Your help would be SO appreciated!

Don't know if you've solved it by now, but I use puppy pads at night because she'd had them at the breeder's. I also started by putting a puppy pad outside where I want her to go, and initially she went on it, then she went near or on it, and sometimes I don't put it down (after two weeks home) and she'll now just go on the ground in the little pen I set up in the area I want her to use. Hope this helps if you're still struggling, I wish you luck

I've just got a 10 week old. The advice I have been given by the vet is that he shouldn't be walked until 2 weeks after his first jabs so 12 weeks but only on pavement. He needs to have his 2nd jabs at 14 weeks and then 2 weeks after that he can go for a proper walk. Then it's 5 minutes for every month of their life so a 3 month old can be walked for 15 mins. Not any more because it will damage their joints. Other people may say different things but that's what my vet has just told me

Unfortunately, my puppy does just stop and drop (urine, that is) He'll walk around with his nose to the ground so I get on alert, then he moves off as if nothing just happened and then boom, stop and drop. I've tried several ways to catch him, but now he doesn't want to stay in his potty area at all. My biggest problem is that he's so small (1.4#) and was told not to use a collar on a Yorkie. And also was told not to let him outside until he's had all his shots, because he's so tiny he could get sick so easily. I think I'm going to have to make him a light-weight harness type thing and use a light-weight rope so I can get him out on the patio at least. Anyway, I've watched this video several times before he came to us, and I thought I was doing things as well as could be done. But now that he's here and I'm experiencing his habits, I watched it again and just solidified what you're saying. Don't get me wrong, he's pretty good most times. I'm going to come up with a plan that should fix this. Thanks for the lesson.

my puppy does great when I am home (because I am following these tips). However, the other people in my household do not follow the training when I am not home and there are accidents. I know that it is totally not his fault (especially since the accidents are occurring near the door we leave to go potty) but the others in my household just don't watch and pay attention to his tells. I have tried telling them that if they are not going to watch him they should leave him in his crate but they just give him the run of the house. How do you handle this inconsistency in training. I'm unsure if this will be read but if anyone knows the answer I would be grateful for the direction. How long do you leave your puppy in the kennel if he/she has not pottied? We had an episode yesterday where our puppy would not go potty in a new designated area and dug her paws in the 3 hours. She carried on in her kennel as if she was being killed. We took her out ever few minutes knowing she had to peee but she wouldn't budge. Finally it was getting to be bed time and we just threw up our arms and let her pee outside where ever she wanted to.

Sometimes I will take him outside and when we gets back he will pee on the pad. In the three weeks I have had him I have moved the pad form the living room to a spot near the from door and he has made this transition well with no accidents in the living room. We live in a fourth floor apartment in the city,. How can I train him out of using the pads altogether. He seems to understand that peeing on the pad or outside are both acceptable. Be sure to put the leash on every time even if you are using a potty grass tray or mat on your balcony. The reason is you want to be certain that the pup will generalize the behavior of potty with leash then when on walks your pup will be comfortable going potty with you there and in a different place. . There are dogs that never will pee/poo on walks.... I say this as a former nyc dog walker, it happens.

When your pup is sniffing the floor or carpet immediately pick him up and bring him outside. Once he pees or poops praise him and if you want give him a treat. Praise with an excited YES!!! GOOD BOY!!! If you live where you want or need to use pee pads, always keep the pads in the same place, there will be accidents at first, don't get angry, just pick him up and put him on the pee pad. Showing him where he's allowed to go. Say , go pee pee. Soon he will stop playing and run to the pee pad. Praise him during the time he pees or poops, not after! Give a treat if you want or lots of praise. YES!!! GOOD BOY!!
I PERSONALLY DON'T LIKE CRATE TRAINING. I have a four by eight pen, at one end is his bed, toys and water. At the far end is a wide pee pad. I use this at night and if I go out. He's safe and has everything he needs until I get home. Once I get home I leash him and take him out to pee or poop. When he comes in he has the freedom of my home.
Works great for me and my pup.
When you create train you worry about getting home hoping he's not crying because he needs to pee bad.
I wish I could post a picture of he's setup, it works perfectly. Also he's only 16 weeks and sleeps all night without waking me. He can wake up walk to the other end of his pen ,pee and go right back to sleep.

My puppy just stands up on his bed and pees!

We just pretty much lived in the garden to begin with. And our breeder had taken the puppies to the garden to pee for a few weeks already. So we had a great start.
If inside, we took him out immediately after sleep, training, play, food and drink. No crate. We had no carpets either. He had a handful of accidents when we didn’t follow the rule of _immediately_ taking him out, but was accident free at 9 weeks 3 days old.
Remained paranoid till he was 6 months old.
There was a lot of trips to the garden… a looooot…
I was NOT gonna be one of those that struggled for months. And had success :)

I did have a question though: if you have a puppy but work 12 hour shifts, how do you potty train? My thought is to set up a kennel in an ex-pen with potty area to go when I'm not home, and on the days I'm off, potty train as normal.

Hate to say it, but if you work 12-hour shifts, it's probably better not to get a puppy. That's a long time to be alone for even a grown dog.
