Teach Your Dog The Paws Up Trick For A Picture Perfect Pose
Let's say that we would like our dog to pose to get a picture taken. Recently in our community, Wag Nation, I did a little demonstration of how you can teach your dog the trick “selfie” where the dog will pose on your shoulders.
Now let's say you're out walking, you wanted your dog to pose on a log or to pose in front of you know, a building, or to maybe pose in some cute way with their paws up on your couch. So, that could be a behavior. Let's shape that behavior. But here's the critical point about shaping. You don't just go, “Oh, I want this behavior. I want the dog posing on these things.” You have to split that behavior down into smaller pieces.
We want outside the box shaping. So, here's a simple, easy way you can do this. And I talked about this in my CZcams video on Target Training. Take a big blanket and you're going to put a blanket on the floor and you're going to give your dog the cue ‘search’ and toss a cookie away from the blanket.
So, the blanket's opened up really big, but we're throwing the cookie off the blanket. Why? Because when the dog eats the cookie, they're going to come back to you. When the dog comes back to you, you're going to say “search” and throw another cookie off the blanket. You might do that three or four times until the dog says, “Well, those cookies are great over there. I'm going to come back here really quick.”
Alright, they're coming back on the blanket really quick. Now we're going to say “cook”, and we're going to feed them a cookie in their mouth. And then we're going to say “search” and throw a cookie off. Very quickly, the dog's going to be driving back to the blanket. If you were standing on the blanket, now you're going to get off that blanket. After a few more repetitions, you're going to fold that blanket in half.
Then you're going to fold it in half again. And before you know it, you have a little square of a blanket. That my friend is a target because I promise you, your dog will be coming in and standing on it with their paws. You could put the cue ‘pose’ with that blanket.
Now let's put it on a footstool. Let's put it on your couch. Now let's get rid of that blanket and take a little towel. Put it on the footstool or on the couch. And now we've got the cue ‘pose’ and our little towel. Let's get rid of that towel. Just say “pose” and point.
I use the cue ‘paws up’ for this. Anytime I point to something, and I say “paws up” because of my blanket training, my dogs know, “Okay, I got this. I can put my paws up on that stump out in the field to take a beautiful portrait.” “Oh yeah, I can put my paws up on your shoulder to be part of the selfie trick.” Do you see the behavior gets split down and the shaping is easy for the dog to figure out.

This would work if you are in a big, green field and with some dogs only. I am in a sad place. I adopted a Chihuahua-Terrier mix and he was probably in a hoarding situation and left to his own devices, never inside a home. He is street smart but has a need to break out of the house and take off. He ran 1 mile in 30 mins and some people found him and brought him back. Since then, he has escaped numerous times and taken off down the pavement, crossing a major street (again) and eluding capture. Yes he has high exercise needs. I walk him 2 miles daily and take him to a park to run free and sniff wild things like terriers want to do. He still runs off. An open window, a crack in the fence, pushing screen doors open, etc. He also is a very picky eater even with roast pork, hamburgers, roast chicken, fresh Greek yoghurt, fish, salmon, veggies, scrambled eggs...! No junk food. He sleeps in a luxurious bed on my bed, eats like an emperor, walkies daily, professional grooming that I do. He has come a long way with being nice to other dogs, and not leaving the park anymore. But... your technique would not work on him. He goes off on his own, sniffing wild trails and could not care less what happens to me. If I shriek, he won't even hear it. This dog is closed off to bonding. I cannot get close to him, always fearful, always suspicious, always wanting to run away despite the best home he could have. He is going to be rehomed. I have had enough of this ungrateful dog. No more mutts. I will wait to rescue a pedigreed dog - mini poodle, my favorite. They are loyal and loving. This dog is disloyal and has no affection for me.

I've been listening to all Susan's podcasts in preparation for getting a puppy; and decided to apply these techniques to my two cats, who sometimes have snarling tiffs with each other. I have been rewarding them with treats when they are hanging out together; and stopped reinforcing their fights by talking to them and giving them both pats afterwards (I thought I was calming them down). Its amazing! Already the frequency of fights has gone down heaps, the tiffs they do have aren't nearly as intense or long lasting, and they even share sleeping on my bed near each other without angst! Really amazing stuff and a great insight into how I've been unwittingly reinforcing undesirable behaviour. Thanks so much Susan, I'm learning so much for having a dog in the future but also how to help support my cats too. You legend!

My dog has been trying to but our dog Walker through his crate for a year now. I like your thinking. I did teach my dog leave it, but we seldom use it. However, I will try to say come instead of leave it going forward. We have had dogs for 30 years and I have gone to training classes with each of them. So much has changed with each dog we have trained. I like the newer ways much better. We enjoyed taking your classes during covid and I recommend them to all my friends when they get a puppy. I still go through your podcasts looking for tricks to teach my dog. We recently took a class to help us get our therapy dog certificate. My dog was ahead of the other dogs because of your classes. I was told that she would have no problem passing the test. Now I have to build up my courage to take the test. I know that if we fail it is just telling us what we need to work on, but getting a failing grade is still difficult.

Thank you! Great timing and gave me a lot to think about. I had completed 3 group courses of agility (Novice 1) with my German Shorthaired Pointer. She was always a bit reactive around smaller dogs. On the last course she wasn’t controllable and the instructor recommended only private courses going forward. This was understandable but a big kick in the gut nonetheless. I regressed to just doing weave poles and jumps in my backyard. Your video has me something to think about. Oh yeah! Every single doorway we come to - sit. Flying the door open - not the cue to go through the doorway. Release word then they can go out or come back in. You can see the wheels turning. Because it's done every single day multiple times a day, don't even have to ask for it. And no treat needed as going through the doorway is a self rewarding behavior. They're not going out or coming back in to eat or whatever else , unless they're sitting. After they get back in the door, I get a pretty (sit pretty - that gets a treat for the trick), release word to check out their snuffle mats or hidden treats (Nose Work) at least twice a day. Did you find them all? I work from home so every single day, first break, stay there mommy has to get a shower. Still in their respective spots once i get back from break. This helps people with the 3 minutes of supervised isolation for the CGC test too. Let's face it, it's at least a 10 minute shower, right! Every single flight of stairs - either sit wait at top until you get down first or i prefer to send my guys up or down, but I'm letting them know to go first. If my students would just do one session of perch work, pivots, and spins per day, that's how many reinforcements per week for being in reinforcement zone? Oh this is where the good stuff happens, right by your side! Of course it grows from there, but at first it's loose leash walking for the majority of students. Think it's time to do one per dog after work BEFORE our walk. One walk per dog - gets them some one on one time with me, plus gives them a break from each other. Want to incorporate something for my Rodeo Dog to get her to focus on crossing the finish line without looking at me. TY Susan for the inspiration to keep going.

I'm getting some offers from you via email, but I would like to know what is the best starter program for a comprehensive training plan for my 4-1/2 month puppy? I have crate games (also recommended by a trainer), I'm watching my way through your podcasts -- but what is the next step? We are attending puppy socialization and the first puppy school for basics. I loved your point about having him already know what is being taught -- we are probably halfway there. I'm also having the trainer in the home on occasion for issues not being taught in puppy class. This spring, the dog agility community was shocked when a fit, young handler from Sweden suddenly had a heart attack in the middle of the night. Luckily for him, his wife knew CPR. That knowledge saved her husband’s life that night as she was able to keep his heart beating until EMTs arrived. I made a promise to my friends @enyahabel and Markus Lindgren that I would host a CPR and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) clinic here. We held our first certification program here last week and have ordered our AED device for the school. It is knowledge and equipment I hope we never have to use. Here in North America statistics show if you have a heart attack outside of the hospital and somebody knows CPR, your chances of survival are still only 7%. That statistic goes up to 70% if there is an AED device available to use. I encourage all dog training schools to host Certification clinic and buy an AED device. I’d love for you to come back to this post and let me know that you’ve arranged your clinic and your AED has been purchased! Special thanks to our instructor Prob from coast to coast training

She'd already called 911 and I proceeded to do chest compressions and I can tell you that little dummy that I'd practice on didn't prepare me for a large man.😳 A person's chest is much higher off the ground and it makes things a lot more challenging when it's a bigger person. Unfortunately he'd already passed after suffering a fatal stroke due to complications of diabetes. 😢 They waited too long to go to the hospital. 😔If in doubt, get checked out!

I love his coat markings. Does he have Merle on his back or is it just the way the camera hit it?

I have 2 Aussie/border collie mix puppies. Should i train them separately or together?

Hi Gayle! It's best to train them separately while you work on them being able to wait turns, here's an episode with help: czcams.com/video/u4L-ra0fwc8/video.html

I hope you never have to use it, but I’m glad you feel more prepared in the unfortunate event.

i'm a little confused. I watched your video teaching It's Yer Choice, and have been doing that with my dogs. It works! But in this video, and some others, I see you recommending throwing a treat on the floor for the dogs. I thought that What' Yer Choice was going to teach the dogs they can't grab things like food from the floor -- they have to wait until I offer it. What am I missing?

Hi Delisa! When Susan throws a treat to the floor for a dog to take, she uses a location specific reinforcement marker "search" that gives permission for the dog to take it. More info on this other podcast: czcams.com/video/5XDsCd39gCY/video.html Happy training!
