Duck Hunting 2016 - Episode 14 - Shooting a triple!

  • Today I went out on a solo duck hunting trip. It was a great day for a hunt, even though I was sick. The mallards were still around, and they were working just right.
    Had a few issues with crippled ducks on this day. #4 shot was not just not cutting it on the late season mallards, but this was my first time shooting a triple.
    This year has been somewhat strange for hunting ducks. We've had a lot of good hunts, but plenty of bad hunts as well. It was good to finish the season strong.

      Thanks! Always working to improve them. I'm super excited for incorporating the new camera into next years hunting videos. I would love a drone, but my bank account would hate me.

      Drake Valley Outdoors you can only shoot so many drone shots anyways! If anything go in on one with a couple buddies and use it a couple times per year.

      Yeah, I would not want to use it on public land either.

    Congrats on your FIRST TRIPLE, Drake! I got my first in flooded timber (much easier shooting than what you had in front of you!) and can and will always remember it like it was yesterday. And such a virtuous effort to try to hunt down that cripple. I'm the same way. Hate losing birds and have stomped around for hours trying to find em. I understand the responsibility of having a dog (a lab! Not a pit!), and you're a wise man to wait until the time is right. That said, I lost 6 birds in the 2014/15 season and that was the impetus to finally get back into the lab game almost 15 years after my last one. It's been awesome. He's a great family dog and a wonderful hunting partner. You'll know when the time is right. And when the time is right you'll for sure love it! Lastly, there is something special about a limit on a solo hunt...just you, your approach to tactics, the blue sky and sun and wind...and the ducks. There is no high-fiving or woo-hooing with buddies...just you and your spot and your efforts and your ducks. Those are good hunts! OH, and lastly lastly, you asked about opinions on your chatter. Keep it up! That's what makes it a vlog! Sterile videos of just birds working, shots, calling, etc., without some narration are very bland and unentertaining. Your dialogue about being on solo hunt, your discussion about your decoy adjustment, your discussion about bird movement and shooting and chasing cripples...........if it weren't for your narrative we would have little idea what your hunt was really like. With your dialogue, it's like we're right there hunting with you. I say keep it up! Look forward to your camera tech talk. Lastly lastly lastly, I keep chiming in on your vids and FDH Elliot's vids and other guys I follow and I have zero videos posted. That's gotta change. I'm a tech geek and a science guy and love capturing memories. It's time to try to put my money where my comments are, so am going to try to get into the game. So to repeat, looking forward to your camera tech talk vids. Will be taking notes! Cheers Drake!

      As always, thank you Yup! The triple is definitely something I won't soon forget. A dog is definitely on my radar for the future, it will likely be a few years down the road.
      I love solo hunts, and I think I will only do solo hunts when I know there will be no one else around. It's very peaceful. And I love being able to play with decoys freely.. and being able to call the shot when I'm comfortable, not worrying about making sure that call is made at the right time for everyone in the group.
      Thank you for the feedback on the talking. I agree that the dialog really helps the viewers follow what is happening.
      I hope when I post the camera setup video it will be helpful for you! I'd love to see some videos from your blind!

      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 6 lety

      Yes it’s the waterfowl pro. At the time of this video, I was shooting the “Over Decoys” choke that comes with the gun. This season I am shooting a Carlson’s Mid Range.

      Once the bigger ducks moved in, I shot 3" #4 1 1/4oz Federals. Last day of the season I shot 3" #1 1 1/4oz Hevi Steel.

    Hey nice triple. One thing I learned this year is I got a lot better footage with the camera on a head mount. Anyways keep the videos coming. Swing by my channel sometime. Also, how much longer is your season?

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for watching! I've incorporated some headcam footage into a few videos, but I much prefer the tripod footage, personally. I'm not a fan of wearing a camera on my head, and it seems like the quality diminishes with too much movement. I wouldn't mind trying a smaller camera, like a GoPro Session on a head mount just for another angle though. Our season ended January 29th, I've just been spreading out the videos a little bit.

      Drake Valley Outdoors cool. Well I enjoy the videos, you got some great hunting down there! Out here on the rock "aka Newfoundland" we get a short window to hunt before the migration happens.

      I'd love a dog, I just don't have the time to train one right now and don't really want another dog right now. Unfortunately I don't think my pit bull would be a good duck dog lol. Thanks for watching!
