Hello a Turkish football fan here. I scrolled down a little bit but didnt see someone from Turkey explaining what really caused these issues. So I will try to do that.
1- In 16.06.2022, Mehmet Büyükekşi became the president of TFF(Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu).
2- Before Halil Umut Meler(referee that got punched) scandal happened, in 2022 during the match between Ankaragücü and Beşiktaş, an Ankaragücü fan entered the stadium and attacked a Beşiktaş player. Josef de Souza(Beşiktaş player) blocked him and as a result he got sent off with a red card.(You can find the footage in the internet) Beşiktaş objected his penalty after the match but TFF approved the penalty and Josef didnt play in the next match(Which was against Başakşehir). They gave Ankaragücü an insignificant symbolic penalty(550.000 TL). And Beşiktaş club and Beşiktaş fans wasnt happy about how TFF handled that. After this incident Josef left Turkey, saying these words: "When they kill a footballer, or when they take away his ability to do his favourite thing from a footballer, or when they attack a referee, you will remember me." These words say a lot of things.
3- I told you about Josef incident because the one who punched the referee was the president Ankaragücü. Both incidents happened in the same place. Both incidents was caused by the same team.
4- Turkish Super Cup match happens during summer between the winners of Turkish Super League and Turkish Cup. But this years match was scheduled to happen in 29.12.2023. Because the match was going to be played in Al-Awwal Park in Saudi Arabia(Why in Saudi Arabia? I dont know. Sponsorship reasons maybe?). In the match day, Fenerbahçe wanted to warm up in the stadium while wearing a t-shirt with Atatürk on it. You can see the t-shirt here static.daktilo.com/sites/1394/uploads/2023/12/29/ataturk.jpg
But Arabians saw this as a political message and didnt allow Fenerbahçe to enter the stadium while wearing these t-shirts. Fenerbahçe didnt agree to change the t-shirts. This event caused a tension between the two countries and Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray agreed not to play the match there and the match got postponed to a later day.
5- Ever since 2011, there is a fight between Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor. The reason for that is that year Fenerbahçe finished 1st place and Tranzonspor finished 2nd. But this was the year that Fenerbahçe was accused of fixing matches. Aziz Yıldırım(Fenerbahçe president at the time) was even sent to jail and Fenerbahçe got International cup penalty and didnt go to international cups for two years. But after that Fenerbahçe won the lawsuit. Even to this day Trabzonspor says that Fenerbahçe fixed the matches and that trophy is rightfully theirs.
6- For this reason every Fenerbahçe-Trabzonspor match is like super tense. Especially the one in Trabzon. TFF knew this and didnt put enough security in the match. And Halil Umut Meler was the referee for the match. Yes, the referee that got beaten earlier this season was assigned for the most "eventful" match of the schedule. Dont get me wrong Trabzonspor should be punished with extreme penalties to prevent future incidents but if you ask me TFF was equally responsible for what happened that night.
TFF gave symbolic insignificant penalties to Trabzonspor as Z mentioned in the video. And some Fenerbahçe footballers got 1-match penalties as well.
7- In April 2018, during the Turkish Cup Semi Final match between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş in FB Stadium, Şenol Güneş(Beşiktaş Manager at the time and former Trabzonspor player and manager(in 2011 during the events I mentioned before)) was hit in the head by an object thrown by Fenerbahçe fans. The match got canceled to be continued at a later date. TFF gave Fenerbahçe the penalty of playing next 3 home matches without fans, Beşiktaş didnt attend the continuation match to condemn. And Beşiktaş got banned from Turkish Cup for 2 years for this reason.
8- The postponed Super Cup match was re-scheduled to a date Fenerbahçe was disadvantageous. Because they had a match with Olympiakos 3 days after set date(Both away matches). Fenerbahçe obviously didnt like that and gave a reaction. They were originally not going attend the match at all but not attending to a cup match had legal consequences(as I mentioned in (7)). So they decided to attend the match with the youth team, then withdraw from the field. So even if Galatasaray didnt score at the start, they were going to withdraw.
9- The reason I even mentioned Mehmet Büyükekşi in (1) is because every football fan in Turkey wants him to resign his position. All of the scandals and events I mentioned above(except for (7) which happened in 2018) happened during his time in TFF.
In 14.12.2023, Mehmet Büyükekşi went to Beşiktaş stadium to watch Beşiktaş-Spartak Trnava Confrence League Match. But he was not welcome there and Beşiktaş fans let him know about it.
    czcams.com/video/WdFLwD4lbgg/video.html&ab_channel=H%C3%BCseyinCAN
The chant in the video means this:
    The killer of football
    The dog of cimbom(Galatasaray)
    The son of a b****
    Mehmet Büyükekşi, Mehmet Büyükekşi
He left the match immediately and never went to a Beşiktaş match again.
Here is a video from Fenerbahçe-Spartak Trnava Conferance league match, this time Fenerbahçe fans chanting the same words
    czcams.com/video/QG6mqzgSmc8/video.html&ab_channel=RizeliFK13
Thanks for reading this long comment, and I am a Beşiktaş fan if you are curious.

I think you missed a couple of things:
    1) There were a lot of fans missing in the stadium because Fenerbahce had already informed their fans not to bother to show up because they wouldn't be playing legitimately. The Turkish Super Cup does, in general, fail to attract fans anyway in recent years, however that's usually because the game isn't between 2 of the big 3 in Turkey. The last time it did happen was 2016, when Galatasaray beat Besiktas on penalties, but again there were about 10,000 empty seats at that game. It also didn't help that the game was being held in Sanliurfa, a nearly 600 mile journey.
    2) The game was originally due to be played in August 2023, like every other Super Cup prior to covid, but was moved to December 2023, in the mid season break in Turkey due to fixture congestion. It was also due to be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but was ultimately cancelled due to a variety of disagreements between the Saudis and the Turks causing both teams not to show up to the original fixture. Being played abroad is not usually an issue, with the 2021 edition being held in Qatar, and many other editions being held in much smaller stadiums all across Turkey, although the decision to hold the competition abroad in the 100th anniversary year of Turkey's establishment certainly upset a lot of people, especially the Saudis when Turkey wanted to pay homage to that at the game itself. This meant it was moved again into 2024. Because it was due to be played in 2023, it is still known as the 2023 edition despite being played in 2024, similar to Euro 2020.
Basically, out of the 4 possible times between the 2 sides that they could have fielded a squad, only once was it actually done by either team.

Just an update, the statement at 4:37 was denied by Kerem himself, stating he only said "Please don't be sorry, we've got nothing against you brother." but Fenerbahce player Emirhan wasn't bothered and looking somewhere else and that is their only interaction. When the game begins, Gala only passed the ball eachother in their half waiting for what Fener's gonna do. But they started to press, and obviously they pressed to get the ball. Nobody knows what their plan was but Fener always tends to do "clever things" and manipulate the story, but Gala wasn't there to play along.
Don't be fooled by Fenerbahce, they'd do everything and tell every lie to victimise themselves and antagonise Gala.

Turkish football especially this season is in pure chaos. But the main problem this season is Fenerbahçe's billionaire president Ali Koç. Ali Koç has been the president fro 6 years and he only won one Turkish cup last year. After spending hundreds of millions of euros he thinks he is entitled to win more league titles.
Couple of weeks before the referee-punching incident he ama said in a joking manner: 'do not be suprised if one of us goes to the federation building and punch someone'. And voila a referee was punched.
On the super cup, Fenerbahçe had a game 10 days before the super cup game but they still asked it to be postponed whe their opponents Olympiacos had a game at the same day. This entitled, spoiled guy wants the system work for himself. For instance, Fenerbahçe won at least 3 games with unfair penalties that they got in the extra times. But guess what. This was not enough for Ali Koç because they are still behind Galatasaray.
So, the guy wanted to get biased treatment and threatened to pull out of the league to get it. Turkish football is in chaos but this guy is just the cherry on the top.

Hey Z, I think you should dive down the Gonçalo Feio rabbit hole. A young Portuguese coach in Poland, he took over at Motor Lublin in the 3rd division relegation places, got the club into the promotion play-offs and then got promoted that same season. Behind closed doors things weren't quite as positive as you would imagine tho. After a disagreement with the chairman of the club, Feio threw a document tray at his face, splitting his eyebrow and sending him to the hospital. A while later, the spokesperson of the club came out to the media accusing Feio of mobbing, sharing some terrible, unhinged quotes. There were also many smaller controversies, like him clashing with the refs, many, many crazy press conferences. Despite everything though, he never lost the faith of the club owner and got the club promoted. Now comes the good part tho. A year later, he was now fighting for back to back promotions, situated in the promotion playoff places, before, around two weeks ago, out of nowhere, he decided to resign immediately, leaving the team to his assistant. And now, literally today, he was announced as the new Legia Warsaw coach, after their questionable sacking of their latest coach. Insane story, and surely many insane stories to come out of this. Sorry for how messy this recap is. You can easily catch up on the lore from a more reliable source by Google translating a few Polish articles. I recommend the site Weszlo.pl :)

After the Trabzonspor-Fenerbahçe match, the number of fans who stormed the pitch was not "hundreds," but around 10-15 people. Batshuayi famously round-house kicked a fan, but was not fined. Nor did Osayi-Samuel who punched a fan lying down. But Oosterwolde kicked a fan in the head who was clearly detained and rendered ineffective by an official. Most actions of Fenerbahçe players were deemed as self-defense, but nothing can justify Oosterwolde's actions. You just cannot kick a person in the head when they are lying down unable to move.

Nah when Fenerbahce is one of the main characters of the incident, I can understand that they are never right. From where ? If Appiah didn't hit the post in 2006, they were the champion. If Volkan ( Club legend goalkeeper) didn't miss the ball in 2008 and Nonda didn't score, they were the champion. If they beat Trabzon at home in 2010 which was like that legendary celtic-barca game , they were the champion. If they played Alex de Souza ( Literally club legend) and beat Galatasaray at home in 2012, they were the champion. If they beat Erciyes at home in 2015, they were the champion (fun fact Erciyes was relageted in that season) . If they beat Sivas at home in 2021 covid season, they were the champion. they bottled literally 6 cup 6 not 1 not 2 not even 3 but 6. Using the term injustice for 20 years after messing up the final matches? I don't think so. btw 5 of those bottles are at home not away

Hej Zealanderino any chance you'll cover the situation with John Textor accusing a lot of people of match fixing in Brazil? I get the feeling the Brazilian media isn't taking the case seriously because they just see "some gringo" trying to change the "way things are" and boi oh boi I figured if the Americans picked up on what's happening in the Brazilian League, well, something might come out of it.

Team two commits 62 fauls and gets 4 yellows. That's not ok

Not everybody was defending themselves is another issue. While Batshuayi is 100% in the clear, Oosterwolde should have gotten a at least 10 match suspension punishment for kicking an already tackled, incapacitated pitch invader laying on the floor with security on top of him. Equally Trabzonspor got no real punishment either.

  • @firatkGS

TFF is garbage but FB benefitted more than all other clubs, Ali Koc complaining is just because he doesn't have any league titles. Also, he and the guy who punched the ref are like best friends, so he is not against violence in general, just against his own players

The problem with sorting Turkish football out is that at some point you have to involve Turkish people. Turkish people aren't particularly well known for being open to compromise, able to negotiate, or just even act like reasonable human beings most of time. Just ask the Greeks about that.
As fun and interesting as Turks and Turkish history is, a UN peace keeping force will be required.

I was actually at the Fenerbahçe match before the Trabzonspor match. Fenerbahçe is more of a leftwing team, or at least anti-regime club, representing the Asian side and community of Kadiköy.
Galatasaray is their arch nemesis, representing the outer neighborhoods of the European side. They are the establishment and upper class.
Both clubs transcend socio economics though, but those are accurate generalizations.
Istanbul Başakşehir is the very pro-regime club (not really any fans)

That's absolute rubbish. While Fener do represent the Asian side of Istanbul they have fans all over the city, not just Kadikoy, same way Gala do not have fans solely from mecidiyekoy. While none of these 3 big Istanbul clubs are particularly pro regime or right wing compared to some other Turkish sides, Fener are the furthest right, with Galatasaray being historically the team of the Academics and Besiktas the Communists.

Olympiacos, Fener's opponent played a league game same day same hour at Fenerbahçe. TFF proposed to postpone the match in between two Olympiacos matches (since Greek FA did it for Olympiacos) and Fener refused it insisting on the Super Cup match, which was already postponed twice since August 23.
The nuance which you blamelessly of course is missing is that Fener has been acting like the spoiled kid that wants everything to do be done exactly as he wants, no compromise whatsoever. Any other FA wouldn't bend to this.
You talk about punishments to self defense (kicking the head of a guy 1 match, punching another repeatedly on the ground AFTER the guards already tackled the guy, 1 match) and I talk about a gazillion more where Fener players and staff don't get punished at all. Hell 2 matches ago in Kadıköy, the captain of Fener said to ref's face that "He wouldn't be able to get out of the stadium" and there has been no punishment, but a footage from the stands showing Icardi grab his dong for a millisecond got him suspended.
20 years of injustice they are talking about, yet they are the only one of the big 4 who couldn't win a championship AFTER the FETÖ stuff is done and they are removed from the various positions in the country. They flaunt that last 10 years they have been the leader in total points earned but no championships, but you take a look at the individual seasons and all you see is that in the "Life or Death" matches, Fener unilaterally dies. No ref influence, no nothing. Last year they got beaten down 3-0 twice by Gala, yet still have the gall to claim that without the FA they could have been the champions. It's absolutely delirious to watch.
It's the nuance that lets you read between the lines and honestly, I can't blame anyone for not getting this. It's fucking complicated and deep

Imagine an Arab owner of a Premier League team influencing government policy in the U.K. This can happen in Turkey where politics and football meet.. .Keep European football European by having no foreign owners in domestic leagues ,or teams with less than 5% of their territory in Europe for European competitions. So Turkey ,Israel,Kazakhistan all out. Premier League owners who own countries, out.Very simple how to clean European football.
