I've been a huge fan of the @Tech21nyc Bass Driver DI for many years now. But then my friend Denis lend me his @Tech21nyc VT Bass DI. The VT Bass DI is such a versatile preamp that can give you anything from a light boost to gnarly overdrive and fuzz tones or even modern metal tones :)
Basses I used:
- Greetings From Marcus: Frankenstein Jazz Bass (Alembic Pickups)
- Playing Dart: Music Man Sterling in serial mode
- Finnish Glass: Sandberg Ken Taylor 5 String
- Modern 5 String: Sandberg Ken Taylor 5 String
- Reggae: Sandberg Ken Taylor 5 String
- The (Punk) Rock Show: Custom Fender Jaguar Bass (SD Quarter Pound Precision Pickup)
- Give it Away: Frankenstein Jazz Bass (Alembic Pickups)
- Jamerson: Custom Fender Jaguar Bass (SD Quarter Pound Pickup and Foam mute)
- Cheers Lemmy!: Frankenstein Jazz Bass (Alembic Pickups, neck pickup only)
- Jaco: Frankenstein Jazz Bass (Alembic Pickups, bridge pickup only)
- In your Fuzz!: Custom Fender Jaguar Bass (SD Quarter Pound Precision Pickup)
- Raging Tim: Music Man Stingray 2 Band (1986)

I recorded the Bass in Cubase 10 and only added a tiny bit of compression on each track to match the levels a bit. The dry signal was recorded through the parallel output of the VT Bass DI.

The thing is obviously supposed to emulate Ampegs, but this video demonstrates it covering the ground of several different amps.

Pretty damn cool.
Well thats a good thing, it imulates pretty much any bass amp, i get a HIWATT 200 sound from the settings i use
to get the sound John Entwistle had in the late 60s
does it all, i have one, been playing bass for 50 years, i love it, i love the SVT but its too heavy to take everywhere
but this will do it.

Tech 21 should have this on there website and they should send you free stuff for your great advertising 👍👍🏿👍🏽

Same here 😂 I had the VT Bass like 8 years ago but I think I was absolutely shit at making my amp sound good... I'm getting the DI version, the parallel output will be nice to compare it to my Helix

Man, you killed on the Power by Marcus Miller there! Amazing tone, great mute notes. I like that song so so much. I've recently been watching hundred of videos of the VT Bass DI, I might try to get me one!

The wonderful Sans Amp box with so many possibilities. I run one, always on,
for tube emulation, and massive tone control available to me on stage.
I can use it to manage the level I send the board from both active and passive basses.
I have stuff worth more that just sits. Can't say enough about this one.

Excellent Video and playing! Thanks for taking the time to do it. With all these possibilities I hope Tech 21 will one day release a programmable version in the fly rig format without any effects. (Or just compression.)

Great review because u actually got certain settings that you matched to certain bass tones
And u played the actual bass lines so you can hear how close u can actually get…
Best review on this pedal I’ve seen, most useful and you get pretty close to all the sounds you go for…
It’s really helpful, I just wish u could tell us when the bite switch etc… was on or off…not your fault…lol
But it’s the most helpful review for me by far….im just learning about pedals and cab sims and di boxes

I've considered using one of these as my main clean tone with just a tiny bit of grit added for warmth and then a separate dirt pedal for a heavier OD. Maybe a DG b3k.
Great video. I've been wanting a more organic sounding overdrive, my Darkglass X ultra is too fuzzy and artificial for the music I usually play. The fact that this can do Joe Dart and Timmy C as well just sold me on it.

All the other tiltes were very self explanatory but this one is very very very hard

Great demo, perfect tone and playing! Do you think it's possible to get a sound which is similar to the classic Sansamp BDDI? However, this pedal seems to be far more versatile, and you can ear that "tube like" tone, but it seems to be pretty different from the BDDI, maybe a little less warm

check out the tech21 bass fly rig version 2. its got the vt bass circuitry in it pluss the bass driver circuitry Plus a comp another other goodies.

What is the model of the Alembic Pickups on the Jazz bass?
Sorry I dont know it. The only thing is know that they are really old 80/90 ish
The eq works when the signal is dry? The footswitch only activate the drive section?
Valid question.
He uses different basses and different EQs for the songs, then he adds the pedal. Your EQ will not be affected when the pedal is off. He has a different tone for each song before he demonstrates the pedal's shaping.

It is the Sandberg Ken Taylor 5 String Bass on its own.
