- Tim Starace walks you through the differences between our 3 most popular pedals for bass:
SansAmp Bass Driver DI
SansAmp VT Bass DI
SansAmp Para Driver DI
Potato chip warning: We actually have a total of 9 pedals and 2 rackmounts designed primarily for bass, plus 4 that are for both guitar and bass. You can't have just one!
www.tech21nyc.com/ - Hudba
Going on close to a decade with my original bass driver DI. What a monster of a tool that thing is! I have RPM rack as well, love that!!! I take the RPM into the studio a lot, but I also like it in the FX loop on my 90s Trace rig, it’s a beast! - also, YY Not rules!
I'm still using my original Sansamp Bass Driver from around 1998. It has seen countless live shows with me over the years and saved the day more than once when I had an amp fry on stage. (I even quickly handed it to a guy from an opening band once when his amp fried. He was back up and running and the show saved in less than 2 minutes.)
Awesome demos. Great audio, and Tim's playing is impeccable as always.
I want them all, but i have the Bddi V2! And its the backbone of my bass tone. Thank you Tim!
Thanks for the review. Loved the way that you covered the different settings on all three. Mostly what I am trying to do is get rid of string noise and sounds like the Fat Tube amp setting is the way to go. Thanks again.
A very clear, concise rundown of all 3 DI pedals. Great job as always Tim.
The ParaDriver is the least known of the three, but I'm very happy with mine. Thanks for the video, great tones throughout!
Awesome demo and awesome playing!!!
Great video! I DO have more than one, a BDDI V1 that I think I got in the 1990's, and most recently a YYZ. Well built, awesome sounding gear. There are a LOT of tones to be extracted from these pedals so don't be afraid to experiment. Tim gave some great examples in the video.
Tim is the Man! 😀 Great demo video!- Brent ,VT
That's really useful! I have not tried the Paradriver, and that one seems the best choice for me.
Me and my brother have been using the Sansamp Classic since 1995. Since I play bass and guitar, I upgraded to a Sansamp Paradriver v2. It is by far the best preamp I have ever have. I use it through an SWR 2004 and a custom cab and it does wonders. Big cheers to you guys from Canada.
I've had a para driver since 2011ish - it's never failed me. I find it to be a whole lot more useful than the bass driver cause it has a mid control, and I've ended up putting it in front of a whole heap of things - vocals, synth, field recordings, samples, you name it. You can do everything with it, and you can get a whole heap of things sitting in their own midrange frequency really easily. Been looking for a video like this to understand the other two, much appreciated!
Nice one Tim 👍🏻
I’m with you on the Para Driver. But Bass Driver is great too. I also have the rack RBI that I bought years ago which I’ve always loved.
I used to explain to my bass player friends, the difference before/minus Sansamp is like listening under water compared to when one’s plumbed in. It’s very difficult to unhear it.
My favorite is the Bass Driver DI V2. Love mine makes all my amps sound so much better!
I’ve used a Sansamp as my main sound for almost twenty years and currently use the Para Driver. I think a lot of bassist think if something isn’t only for bass then it isn’t any good but that one does everything the Bass DI does plus it has the adjustable mids.
I love the VT Bass DI! My favorite and most used pedal
The VT Bass does every thing the other two pedals do, not sure why he only used two settings
Been usina a BDDi V1 for 10 years. Simply love that thing! This video made me want to try the Para Driver tho. Much more control over the mids.
I use the Bass Driver DI, and it's incredible!!
Sweet! Went to shop for one of these and stumbled upon the bassist of YYNOT. Phenomenal Rush Tribute band.
Really enjoyed that and cleared things up for me. I want ampeg flip top sound but ain’t shellin out all that dosh for the actual rig
I love the paradriver for the mid sweep too. Funny you mentioned it's universality, I bought mine used from a lead singer!
I use a V1 in the effects loop. My Hartke amp has plenty of character and tone shaping in the front end, with tube and SS input drive along with 10 band EQ and lo-hi pass filters. But what all the great old tube amps did was to drive the power amp section too! So I have the SansAmp at the end of my effects chain, right into the Return. It puts just a hint of edge on the power amp.
I used to use the VT with my Hartke LH500 head and it sounded really nice with a clean tone but I wanted some grit but that VT pedal had a messed up gain knob so I got rid of it. The LH head is a good pedal platform because the on board eq is so basic you get all the character from the pedal, and if you have a fresh 12ax7 in the head it adds a nice tinge of tube warmth
Badass tones with each of them
I tried the SansAmp Para Driver last at a gig, it worked very well! Great tube emulation!
SansAmp guys great customer support, wanted to figure out how to use my amps preamp sound with the
RBI features sent me diagrams on 3 ways to set it up, pardon the lack of gear nomenclature, to much inputs outputs wires, got it figured out, Thanks
I use the gt2 on my bass and it does better to me than all the other bass distortions i have used in the past!
my weapon of choice for bass is the Red Ripper, and for guitar it’s the XXL. sansamp DNA but particular flavors of it that i can’t get enough of.
Sansamp BDDI V2 and a tuner - legit the only pedals I use for playing live. Small amp as a monitor behind me. I know my tone is going to be great with the sansamp through the PA so I don't even need to worry. I love not having to worry about that shit🤘
Nice rundown on the pedals! I think your "Studio 21" needs some pop! Paint the brick, backlight the Tech21 sign, and some color floor lighting. Also, you should have your own line of pedal boards and demo some combinations of pedals. Love the pedals!
It would be interesting to compare the Para Driver and the Q/Strip DI in a bass setting as well! I bought the latter for my bass. I love that it has two mid controls!
Love my Paradriver!!!!
super helpful video
I use the original tired and true BDDI along with my Ampeg B108 for home practice and it sounds amazing. Also, the BDDI has been a staple in punk rock for many years so it's a proven tone beast.
Tired? We know what you meant, but couldn't help chuckling a bit. 😄
The Sansamp DI was my first introduction to the bass preamp world, in the 90's when I was actively playing in the skate and pop punk scene we went direct on bass and guitar but one day the bass guy at Sam Ash said "hey have you used a Sansamp?". I didn't know what he was talking about so he went and grabbed one and plugged it into an Ampeg 1x15 combo and when he kicked it on it was like 🤯🤯🤯🤯". I did have the VT pedal for a bit but that gain knob was messed up so I got rid of it, I use an MXR Bass DI which sounds good but the sansamp just has this thickness and growl that I can't get with my MXR.
Bass Driver DI is my go-to
I own a tech 21 vt 200. Awsome product. THANK YOU 🫡 . Great pre amp section . Even if you don t know ampeg i can promes a great ride anyway. The pre amp offers everything to me ❤.
😊 I would go with any san amp again cause i know what i got with the VT.
I realy belive that san amp are the masters of preamps.
But i would love if you could continue with the amps again. 😅
Scince i have that Amp i can t take the most stuff serios anymore. Kidz peal thair oranges and even the funky rumble is a toy to me.
... welcome to the next level NEO.
I still use the RBI. Sounds great.
I love my VT bass DI. My band mate guitarist has the fly rig v2. You know just bring us some speakers no matter what quality of them we will sound great.Thats tech 21 for us.
For me the best sansamp for bass is the psa 2 .
Pros:
- its digital programmable
- store sounds
- you can make your own custom tone.
- its almost like you have any tech 21 pedal
Cons
- no xlr out
- you need to buy an extra pedal if you want to blend your clean sound
I’d pair þe PSA wiþ þe Tech 21 Q\Strip.
I use two of them in parallel. My og 20+ year old bass driver set to a deep fundamental tone. I run out of the parallel out to a Vt deluxe set with more highs, cut bass, and slight break up. Send both xlr outs to foh. I also have a paradriver which is perfect for my upright or Kala ubass.
OMG. I just saw the video for the XB Driver Bass! I just preordered it. This will do everything I was using 3 pedals for + compression and more routing options. Woot!!
I compared the Tech 21 di boxes by their sound and liked the ParaDriver the best. Not that there would be something wrong with the other boxes, but still 🤘🤘
Now I have it and Rbi rack di
I'm loving my ParaDriver and my VT Bass DI. I've started with the BDDI, but the lack of mid sweep on the old model, pushed me towards the ParaDriver. Never regretted swapping! For the true Ampeggy-sounds, I got me a VT Bass DI. Nice for the real Ampeggy-style of sound. Also nice, but not always. The ParaDriver is good in every situation. Every...
Keep it up Tech21!
The Great Sansamp 🔥🔥
The DP-3X is that good that I have 2 of those pedals 🖖😎♠
It is the holy grail of bass pedals. And my BDDI V1 is the swiss army knife of bass pedals!
Love my DP-3X! Only issue I'm having with it is how to integrate it with the rest of my pedalboard since its signal is so HOT. Gotta dial down either the DP-3X's Volume a LOT or the Input gain on my amp, which throws off other drives/distortations I use for other sounds.
I've been wanting a DP-3X for a long time but I'm putting it on hold for now waiting for the new SansAmp Frank Bello pedal to be released.
The best setting on the VT Bass DI, is the Ampeg SVT Setting, which is the Same Setting as your "Growly Nughut" on the para driver the VT Bass DI has almost all the same settings as the other two
best DEMO ever
BDDI guy hear, love it !
Have a few different Di’s but always go back to the BDDI.
Ive been a user of the 3 ch programmable for about 6 years now. Without fail, in very room I've played that had a house engineer, the engineer told me i had the best bass tone of any player he can remember.
When they ask what my effect chain is. I simply say. Sadowsky-tuner-sansamp-board. No amp. Nothing else.
Sadowsky+sansamp=money.
When we get to V3 of these, can we have a Presence on the Paradriver? That would be perfection!
I've been using Tech21 products for over 30 years, love the gear, love the company (email them a question and they'll get back to to you in no time at all, with useful advice). I have a VTDI on my board as we speak that would have been a Paradriver if I could've got one at the time, but it does the job and I don't need to change. Growly Nougat? I'm trying to see a Geddy connection there, but can't find it.
Really appreciate all the kind words! Growly Nougat is what is now known as Tim's signature sound.
@@Tech21nyc Tim is a Geddy fan, so that explains that, thanks.
Look at the speed you've replied to my comment, exactly the same as your customer support - outstanding!
I hear the Geddy thing, but Growly Nougat sounds to me as though it's edging towards Billy Sheehan's sound.
Hello friend, incredible sounds!!! incredible way to play! I want to ask you if with a Tech 21 asans amp bass driver DI V" I can also get that Jameson / Motown sound bass sound or which of your products is better for that. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words! Many of our SansAmps can get that sound, and especially all 3 covered in this video. You will have to decide which features you like most.
I tend not to use any pedals, embellishments, etc. as I like my instruments to do the talking. I do, however, use my old Sansamp, which I love, to tweak the sound of my OLD Hamer Quad bass into the 4 Hiwatts I use to run that monster bass.
still have the old Tech 21 NYC VT bass pedal
Para Driver and EBS Multi Comp!!
Thank you for the demo Tim! I currently play the RBI for bass and love it but want to shrink my rack. Do you have advice on dialing the bddi v2 to feel like the RBI?
For the best advice, please email us directly: info@tech21nyc.com.
I love my classic SansAmp Bass Driver DI V1. It’s good eiþer alone or paired wiþ oþer pedals. If I really needed to, I could pull it off my board, put it in my gig bag, & gig wiþ it alone.
I'm having trouble figuring this out. I have a, sansamp bass driver DI V1, traynor small block 500H Head with a Cab. I can't seem to get any of the sound tones when I plug it in. I'll plug the cable from amp head return effects to pedal output and then pedal input to guitar and then do all the adjustments from there but it just sounds like a regular bass tone whatever I do. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here
There are too many variables to answer that here. For the best advice, please contact us directly: info@tech21nyc.com
The paradriver can be used on electric guitar too. Or acoustic guitar.
My old late 90's Bass Driver DI stopped working. When you step to engage it just goes silent, like a mute button. Wondering if it can still be repaired. Love that box.
Sorry to hear that. For repair questions, it’s best to email us directly: info@tech21nyc.com.
How much difference is there between the all flat characterstics of bass driver and para driver except the cab sim and presence in the bass driver? How different are the circuits and is there drive sound different since one is specifically for bass? Lots of questions there but an explanation would help a lot, I am very curious after this demo.
Both units are flat response when in bypass mode and function like most DI's. When engaged and the Blend is off and the tone controls are at their null points they are also flat response or can be used as transparent DI's with tone shaping if desired. When the Blend control is turned up, the SansAmp circuit is mixed with the un-effected signal or it can be set for 100% amp emulation. There is some overlap of sounds between the units but both units have their own sonic signature. It's something you need to try with your rig to make the best decision. The Bass Driver is a great choice for players that want that specific tone and the Para Driver has more midrange control and is capable of more overdrive (if desired) but does not have the "sizzle" that the presence control of the Bass Driver has.
Tim, do you use the SansAmp with an amplifier or straight DI into the PA? I used mine last year at an outdoor festival when I blew my GK head and plugged my bass into the SansAmp directly into the PA and it saved our gig.
I use my SansAmp Paradriver into an SVT and direct to FOH. The SVT is basically for me to have some “rumble” onstage and to benefit the folks in the first few rows. Otherwise the SansAmp direct to FOH is 99.999 percent of my live sound.
@@TimStarace thank you Tim
Great video, thank you:)
Which one has the fattest tone?
They are all fat! 😃However, if you're new to the world of SansAmp, we would recommend starting with the Bass Driver. Thanks for asking!
I have 2 of these and as President Jack Nicholson said in Mars Attacks, two out of three aint bad.
I wish there were a version without DI because I wouldn't place reverb, delay and looper before any of them, of course I could buy a 2nd DI but I hate to have to pay for something that I already have 😁
In most bass guitar applications, the bass guitar is DI'd which was why the Bass Driver DI was originally developed and why it has been such a popular product for us the last 30 years. To remove the DI feature would not make sense from a manufacturing level.
Most bass players run effects in front of their bass amp or DI. If you want to place effects after the Bass Driver DI etc, an inexpensive direct box can easily be utilized. If you need further help please contact our support department. info@tech21nyc.com
You might want to consider the Bass Fly Rig v2, which has an effects loop: www.tech21nyc.com/products/flyrig/bass-fly-rig-v2/. It's difficult to make suggestions without knowing the context. For the best advice, please email us directly: info@tech21nyc.com
@@Tech21nyc thanks for answers and advice, the flyrig is awesome but also more than what I need and I understand that all those devices without DI make little to no sense. In the end they all sound too good, the 2nd DI will be the right way to deal with my whims 😁
Which buttons are pressed in for the first sample?
Mid Shift in/Bass Shift out
So could Para Driver considered something of a bi-amp simulator for bass as well? Seeing as it's so similar to the di-2112 and the Dp-3x?
No. The DI-2112 which is based on the Para Driver has an additional channel and the ability to mix it in parallel with the Drive portion of the circuit. The DP-3X is a completely different circuit.
@@Tech21nyc got it! Thanks for your response. I have the DP-3X and its pretty rad!
Nice Demo ! does the Paradriver work well with double bass with piezo pickups ? thx
Thanks for asking. It absolutely does. Head over here for more details and note, you can download the owner's manual for even more details: www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/paradriver-di/
Yep, i have a Fishman two element piezo on my upright and the Para Driver takes away all the nasty. It's also great on kick, acoustic guitar, etc... all sorts of things

With the disease I have, I find it difficult to remember/dial in settings. Is there any suggestions on how to get Frank Bello-like tones out of the Bass Driver DI or the VT Bass DI? Or better yet the Chracter Series VT Bass (v2)? Thank you.
The Frank Bello has its own unique sound. We don't have any recommended settings to get that sound with our other pedals.
@@Tech21nyc Ok and thanks for replying.
@@jackshittleThe good news is, we will be introducing a Frank Bello Signature SansAmp in the very near future. 🤘😉

Growly nougat!
Need a di to take a vertical signal and convert for industry standard wide angle signal
Thanks for your comment, but we're not quite sure what you mean. 🤔
@@Tech21nyc ;) you posted vertical video and its really hard to watch on CZcams. Love the products though!
@@smiff9567 Ah, understood. Having different formats across several platforms is a royal pain for all of us!
Witch one best used for Geddy sound ? Thank Tim
Of these 3, we'd say the SansAmp Para Driver. You should also check out our Geddy Lee Signature SansAmps. Can't get more Geddy than these 😃: www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/geddy-lee/
Can I use both outputs at the same time? I mean, the XLR for a clean bass tone and the other one for other bass effects. Both outputs to the sound engineer.
You can use both outputs simultaneously. Effects would have to be placed after the 1/4" output.
@@Tech21nyc Thank you so much! And what about the source? Do I only have to activate the Phantom ground button for the XLR? I mean, by that way can I feed both signals? Or do I have to connect another source for the 1/4"?
@@user-nz9jk8up9h Please contact our support department for more detailed information. info@tech21nyc.com
What bass strings were used on the bass driver di(the first pedal that went through the rundown)
Stv style
D'Addario EXL 170 Nickels
When will we see another bass boost chorus? It's the favorite chorus of a lot of bassists, but they're hard to find these days.
Not sure if it's in the cards to do a stand-alone again. That chorus, btw, is in the Bass Fly Rig, along with a bunch of other goodies.
@@Tech21nyc Dear Tech21 sound ninjas, please put the distortion circuit of DUG in a standalone pedal with some extra knobs and tweaking options. this is an amazing distortion circuit !
@@Mrmemphisbones Thought we kinda did that with the DP-3X 🙃
@@Tech21nyc Love my DP-3X! Only issue I'm having with it is how to integrate it with the rest of my pedalboard since its signal is so HOT. Gotta dial down either the DP-3X's Volume a LOT (9 o'clock max) or the Input gain on my amp, which throws off other drives/distortations I use for other sounds.

It's best to choose the unit that gives you the overall tone that you are looking for. All of our products respond well to slapping techniques.
Whats rhe song for the para drover svt setting
Detroit Rock City!
Not even going to mention the Geddy Lee boxes? I hate Rush but that thing is great.
Very please to hear you like one of the Geddy Lee Signature SansAmps. We couldn't cover all the bass gear in one video or it would go on for days. As it says in the description, we actually have a total of 9 pedals and 2 rackmounts designed primarily for bass, plus 4 that are for both guitar and bass. There are a bunch of videos covering all the Geddy gear in this playlist: czcams.com/play/PLHNte-PbVjgVWGCjDOxKicLjezFRToCev.html
Would this work well with upright bass?
Absolutely!
I prefer the SVT sound of the Sansamp BDDI, because he didn't bother giving a demo of that sound on the VT for comparison; which he claimed to be the one if "ampeg is your thing".... SO... Tech21? How about it? Why should I buy the VT over your own BDDI.... or even Ampeg's new "Ampeg SVT-CL in a pedal box" SGT-DI??
The focus of this video was intended to cover the differences, rather than being a shoot-out. Most of our bass gear is capable of achieving an SVT-style sound. As noted in the description, we have a total of 9 pedals and 2 rackmounts designed primarily for bass, plus 4 that are for both guitar and bass. That's a bit too much ground to cover in one video. Of the 3 most popular SansAmps, since we get asked this a lot, we wanted to help you decide which feature set and variety of tones are best for you. Why choose our gear? The comments may shed some light. And we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of the SansAmp Bass Driver DI this year, so we must be doing something right. 😃
What about the Tech 21 VT Bass? Is that one line level?
The VT Bass DI has a an adjustable level (+10dB boost) on the 1/4" output. The output level (dependent on the input source) when the switch is off is -10dB. When the switch is engaged the output level is 0dB.
@@Tech21nyc No, I mean the VT Bass that doesn't have a DI.
@@dpalaoro The original VT Bass should be able to get close to 0dB but it depends on the input source and the settings. In general we recommend setting the pedal for unity gain. If you need additional help please contact our support department. info@tech21nyc.com
bass drive or para drive for 5 strings ?
Either will work well. Our suggestion is to listen to demos of both or better still demo with your instrument.
How about the 2112?
Well, as we said in the description: We actually have a total of 9 pedals and 2 rackmounts designed primarily for bass, plus 4 that are for both guitar and bass. We covered the 3 most similar. If we covered them all, the video would go on for days...and days...and days... 😄
