  • Choosing the right bass preamp pedal can be tough, because there are so many out there at varying price ranges. In today's video we'll go through some of the most popular direct boxes for bass and how they compare within different price ranges from cheap to expensive or you could say, from beginner to PRO.

    The speaker/instrument switch on the RNDI gives you the choice of either plugging your bass's output (Instrument) to FOH, or if you switch to Speaker, you can plug your amp output (up to 1000 watts) into the RNDI input. This way you can get your amp tone.

      I don’t want to bypass my amp considering the large chunk of change it cost and tone it delivers as it is one of the “holy grail” amps no longer in production. This di by neve seems amazing

    • @AllenMarkel
      @AllenMarkel Před rokem +2

      If you don’t want to bypass your amp. Switch to speaker and take the output of your amp. Then use the thru out to speaker. Make sure to use speaker cables if you’re doing this!

    Have used the Aguilar Tone Hammer, Palmer Pocker Bass and EBS Micro Bass 2 over the years. All of them have their pros and cons but in terms of versatility and sound shaping for a clean tone the EBS has been my favourite of the 3. Good review Travis. That Plex has always been on my Radar, but none floating around in South Africa :)

    Interesting, when you switched to the API transformer I looked up and thought oh that’s a nice tone. Even on an iPhone speaker you can tell the difference, which I was surprised about. A lot of churches are using the Agular ToneHammer DI box - but I think people use that to get a bit of distortion/dirt/saturation to help the bass sit in the mix better, where as if you’re playing through a pedal board, you’re probably bringing your own drive and saturation, in that case a more straightforward DI box is probably more useful. I think my favourite (which I don’t use anymore, I just go out of my head) is the active Radial DI - doesn’t seem to choke the sound at all, and it’s built like a tank, and it’s pretty compact.

    I recently bought a sansamp programmable driver DI, and I love it. I can have a clean, warm tube-like tone, a light overdrive to add color on the higher end, and a heavy distortion all on one pedal. If I ever don’t like one of the sounds I can change it in 30 seconds. I seriously recommend it, it sounds great and is super easy to use

    I really don't know why, but the I'm loving the sound from the GK and Neve. The Reddi i think colors the sound with saturation, and gives it an extra oomf of warmth. I could be wrong hahaha but I really love the sound of the GK and Neve

    I like the Reddi best,I've been using mine for three year's now.I've used it on my gigs and use it at church.Also done more then a dozen studio session. Great DI I've tried some other's some of the same one's you'll using on this video.I guess it also depends on the bass just my opinion,They're all good just depends on the player,but yes the Reddi when I started to use it my engineer notice right away. No haven't to do any EQ.But for me the Reddi,I use MTD basses just me.But you are a good player keep up the great work.God bless

    When I gig, I bring a bass (I use different ones but my go too ones is my 73 jazz or a 5 string Peavey cirrus. Great bass actually) and my small pedalboard which includes a tuner, bass compressor and a Sansamp. Just go direct and set my tone with the sansamp. Works for me

  • @chriscuthbertson
    @chriscuthbertson Před 2 lety +20

    The lack of a Sansamp is an interesting choice. Also, you discounted 'cheaper' DI's as they didn't have any controls, but neither did the Neve and Reddi that you did test. Would have been interesting to see a comparison with a cheaper Radial

    • @soundman1402
      @soundman1402 Před rokem

      Radial JDI has a nice, neutral sound. Input impedance is lower than some DIs and amps, so best for active instruments. J48 with bass I actually didn't like. It seems to roll off the bottom octave a bit. My favorite stage DI for my bass (BroadBass 5-string) is the Countryman active DI. It's got clearer sound and more growl than the JDI, and a hotter output since it's active. It doesn't have the "girth" of the REDDI, but I'm actually thinking about selling my REDDI now that I have this Countryman, since it sounds very nearly as good, and is a lot more convenient due to its small size. The Countryman does require phantom power, or I think it can take a 9v battery.

    (Great video.) lve use the mxr with a boss eq pedal and the fishman platinum acoustic DI on the bass setting also the hotone ampero with the many bass amps and IRs. I would love to try that large and heavy Reddi with the tubes for guitar. Ive played many bass amps with my guitar and loved the results. Great info l didn't know the GK or the Reddi.

    I was honestly surprised that some of characteristics I was expecting to hear on certain DI's were more prominent on others. I expected the REDDI to be the deepest sounding but instead was lean in comparison to the Neve and API. REDDI was almost distorting in the low end, or a lot more saturation than I expected. I was surprised the API the was the biggest sounding, honestly thought the Neve would win that category and expected API to be more punchy. I own a RNDI but definitely would like to add the API to my collection. I didn't really care for the others but then again I gravitate towards an SVT tone which is why I don't care too much for the REDDI unless I'm going more for a B15 tone. I would suggest checking out the KHAN DI, that is a SVT style Tube DI. The guy that originally designed the now discontinued Ampeg SVT Tube DI started his own line and created a modded, improved version which is what the KHAN DI is. Another one to look out for is the ZOD IDDI, which is supposed to be a better REDDI and cheaper ($600 new).

    Hey Travis! I have a Kemper for electric guitar but am curious how it is for bass comparably to API when playing out? For the money and quality the Neve RNDI is so incredibly clean. I use mine inline with a DG Vintage Ultra. The volume issue isn't a problem, is it overkill? Absolutely but it's dead silent and fatens up my tone.
    The Reddi was my least favorite especially for the super hefty price.
    The good news for the Reddi, your rig won't be moving around and you can use it as a weapon if needed.

    I use a Behringer BDI21 Bass Preamp Di for $30usd. This is a copy of the Tech21 Bass Driver at around $300.
    I found that for the price the BDI21 is great, has allot of options for sound in the preamp.
    Also the Behringer ADI21 Acoustic preamp Di. A copy of the Tech21 Para Driver. While for Acoustic instruments also gives some nice tone shaping for bass.

    I own a Radial J48, which is perfect for recording. However, I still miss an all-in-one solution with a compressor, so the GK Plex seems great to me. By hearing from here, specially when slapping the bass, the GK's DI doesn't sound too great, so probably when you're not dialing any EQ it doesn't sound as good as a Radial? In comparable terms, the Radial and the Neve are direct competitors, with people choosing one over the other based on personal preferences because technically they seem the same level.
