  • The 2022 Kia Sportage is here and by gum it looks futuristic. It's all jagged lights, dual-screens this and hybrid t'other. It's a tech-heavy new Sportage with a focus on sharp design, a premium-feeling interior and a more refined driving experience. But does it actually do those things? Join me for a walkaround and a driving review of the new Kia Sportage Hybrid in all its futuristic-ey glory.

Excellent review by your good self, as usual. Kia/ Hyundai are producing some good cars nowadays, but I was shocked when a pal told me he'd returned an used Ceed the other day, in favour of a Ford Focus because one of the front DRL strips had failed, meaning the whole headlamp would need to be replaced, costing hundreds of pounds. Some cars can seem like used bargains but can be anything but if they're beyond the warranty period.

Can blame LED lighting for that. Because there are no LEDs that are individually tested and rated for legal road use, manufacturers have to have entire light assemblies rated. This in turn means when one LED element gives up, you have to replace the entire unit to remain legal.
It is a daft situation, and hopefully one day there will be some standardisation so manufacturers can create individually rated elements, and we can get back to replacing a head lamp "bulb", rather than having to replace the entire head lamp unit.

Great, detailed review and I've just ordered a 2023 auto GT Line HEV. Point taken about the extra cost of the HEV variant over the standard petrol GT Line but KIA are doing a deal in September 2023 where the HEV is the same price as the standard petrol engine - a no brainer for me at least. The 7 year warranty takes away the worries of replacing some of the (no doubt expensive) high tech items and any mechanical competents should they fail. I thought my 70 plate Skoda Karoq SE L, that I am trading in, was good but I feel the KIA is more modern and fresher looking, with its upbeat styling and useful tech for similar money. Why do car reviewers always make the German car makers the ones to beat. I cannot name one German car manufacturer that will give you top notch reliability, build quality and good customer service. Many years ago you always paid a bit more for a VW as they were mostly better built than the competition and in the luxury segment, Mercedes were the ones to beat when it came to build and reliability (not anymore as documented customer satisfaction surveys have shown this.) Today the Koreans/Japanese manufacturers are the ones to beat. It seems weird that a KIA is a better long term buy than a VW product or Mercedes/BMW but it is true!

I got the refresh KX4 mild hybrid version end of 2019 and it is a fantastic car. Only thing I can give a negative on is that the ride is a little bumpy over certain roads but it does have 19 inch alloys and the rear and overhead camera could be better resolution.
I did think about waiting for the new version but I am glad I did not as I think previous model looks much better and it has not aged at all. Interior looks very nice though on new model. I like the colour of this one as well but...... My big issue is the price. I would be happy to pay 40k for a Sorrento but not sure I would for a Sportage. It is my second Kia and would have one over any so called premium German car but for a family SUV 40k is wayyyyy to much. I got similar specs for my Sportage and I got that for 24k when part exchange and discounts are considered. The bump up in price seems a bit to much for me.

It is better than German rivals due to KIA's superior reliability record and customer service. I think this KIA is a bit pricey and would pay a bit more and have a Lexus NX. The NX is nice but the tech is dated compared to the sportage, the kia has way more features, parking assist, blind spot cameras integrated into the digital speedometer, 360 camera, ambient lighting, better transmission gearbox, more room and a panoramic sunroof. Your only saying "a bit pricey "because it's a kia. It's priced for way less than what it could be. If this was a Mercedes it would be around 60k easily

We’ve already seen a backtrack for design with regards to recognising that physical temperature controls are more practical than screens- just wondering if they will also step back on the screens too; so that you have an analogue or semi-digital speedometer cluster again rather than just another flat screen. To me it looks cheap and removes character from a car to just have two flat screens (although everyone is currently doing it)- I think it’s a win for car manufacturers now though as cheaper to produce, so they will be reluctant to change back and we are willing to pay a premium for a perceived technological benefit (even if actually there is very little benefit).
