1 thing I noticed: Whichever wing Ronaldo was playing on, Puyol would be the center back to follow him. So it Ronaldo was on the left wing, Puyol would be the right center back. If Ronaldo switched wings, Puyol and Pique would swap spots, when the ball goes out of play. This is so that the more experienced defender will be matched up against the stronger threat either as the shadow defender or primary defender if the full back gets beaten.

I think the most underrated part of the Barcelona dominance under Pep was their defence: Pique, Puyol, Alves, Busquet, Mascherano. The reason why high press didn't work against them initially was 2 folds. The players weren't used to work at such high intensity, which some of them resisted their manager for that. This is evident by Sir Alex's defeat against Barcelona and Jose's ineffectiveness against them as well. The second, and more importantly, the reason why Pep's teams other than Barcelona weren't able to finish off the Champions League, is he was never able to find enough back 4 and a defensive midfielder as suitable to his style as he did in Barcelona. Not only were their defensive play solid, they were extremely potent on the attack as well. Busquet's rotating the ball extremely well, Alves is one of the best wing back in the history of the sport and Busquet is the ideal Pep that he wasn't able to become. Pep's defenders, especially at ManCity, has been extremely inconsistent or unable to contribute to attack as much as he would have liked to. ManCity so far has failed to provide him with the defenders that he's looking for, but to be fair to them, his standard is ridiculously high.

I’ve always held that Messi, Villa & Pedro were far superior to and played far more exquisite football in the box than MSN. MVP’s one touches were magical to behold, something non-existent with MSN. Of course, none of it would have been possible without. Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets behind the front three.

Spot on, totally agree. Back when MVP were the front three with XIB behind them, they often only needed what looked like no more than 6-7 ft between them to squeeze their way into goal. They pulled it off with such regularity and unpredictability it was surreal. I’ve not seen anything like it since.

In Manchester City, a different version emerge. the free 8s( silva and kdb )does what messi did but this time a sleek pass behind the full back ( who has vacated his position to mark him) to a winger(sane or sterling) driving in to box to square to his opposite to score. His method is to draw defenders out of position by deception (fake 9) or by confusion (used two free 8 and a winger) . The best defense is to use 4 full backs and a centre back static in position. Then 5 five in middle and zero striker.
One of pep original ideas is to not to give opponents a passing option by closing down space and harassing opponents like thugs.
This Barcelona team didn't know about the inverted full backs probably because busquest was really good in smelling transition or counter attack was not used in spain. While Rodri press high busquet play closer to centre back. Pep was one the first coaches to play with 2 number 10s now called free 8s (xavi and iniesta ) and this was a night mare to full back who didn't know who to mark -the winger or the no 10 in front of them.
I meant like this Barcelona has been winning things from 2008 to 2011 and Madrid was kinda on the decline during those years. Mourinho brought back those fighting spirit inside of them and made them winner.
