- The first update for Project TaoTao. Problems I've encountered, lighting upgrades, and some performance benchmarks to use as a baseline to compare future results to.
Please remember that I am a very heavy rider at nearly 300lbs. Lighter riders will see greatly improved acceleration and faster cruising and top speeds. I'm not publishing these numbers because I think it's fast, I'm doing this so we can track improvements along the way.

#ProjectTaoTao #139QMB #ChineseScooter - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I'm going through your Tao tao videos over the last two days. GREAT info here. I don't even have a chinese scooter, I just love how things work.. pickign up a scooter now tomorrow with likely a pooched belt. I'll be uploading vids!
I just got a brand new black tao 50 pony atm1 I believe it is exactly. But yes I second that motion that you are very much appreciated 90Gvert!!!!!!! Thanks for your time to help other scoot bros out. God Bless!
The crank seal that I've had problems with is behind the variator (front pulley). If it leaks much at all you'll notice oil under the CVT cover, low oil level, or possibly small puddles under the scoot around the CVT cover.
You can get a main jet kit for $15-$30, depending on the kit. Sliders are $20 per set. Clutch springs are about $10 a set.
thanks.
Nice
@ 4:30 or so, that looks like it could be here in the application foothills of NC, looks a lot like here!
For me, Chinese. If I just wanted to ride and forget it, Japanese or other big brand. The Yamaha, Honda, Kymco, etc... scoots are very nice. Some people get lucky with hassle-free Chinese scooters, but it's not a good idea to plan on that being the case.
Ive seen you use to or maybe still do have a vento triton. well Im looking for parts for one. whats the best site to get parts from Im not good with most sites sayin this fits this scooter and none of them ever say triton so how do i kno it will fit my triton?
I bought a tao tao zummer in June, 2016. I like the tach you added. It would be nice to see what you did to install the gauges. I like the temp gauge for I took my Zummer out for about a 60 mile ride and ended up with gas leak in my stock carb. I noticed gas would leak from the overflow so I guess the needle is sticking. I may order the updated keihin Carb for the adjusting ability, but I also noticed on Ebay there are those clones you mentioned in the PDI. I am curious if the clones are a bad replacement if they are adjustable and have better screws for the cap of the carb? You can pick them up for approx 10.00 less on ebay?
Gauge info :

The clone carbs should work OK as long as they're adjustable.
Hey, 90GTVert! Can you do a video about all the gauges on your Project TaoTao? Also, on that video, can you show, how these gauges are connected. Thanks! (Tauno49cc from 49cc scoot forum)
Here is some info that covers the gauges better than I could on video most likely :

Has any one installed a r6 tail light on a taotao 50cc cruiser? Thank you In advance
the shaft is worn oddly enough. i had 5000 m,iles on my taotao no leaks there.
Great vids...can you send me a link for the gauge cluster please. Is the speedo on that accurate? Stick is way off on mine. Thanks!
Thanks. The gauge is a TrailTech Vapor :
www.trailtech.net/digital-gauges/vapor
It has to be calibrated. When calibrated properly it is accurate. It's more accurate than my GPS as far as I can tell, because it doesn't stop working in heavily wooded areas like the GPS but it's right on with what the GPS says. It's calibrated by tire circumference, all explained in the instructions that you can download from TrailTech.

thanks a bunch! keep up the great work!
thank you for all your advice and videos. spent about 3 hours watching all as many as i can to get an idea of a situation the situation i am in and how i can fix it. just bought a used 2014 tao tao 49 cc. It was riding nice for the first 2 days. 3rd day up to present day which has been about 6 days, the scooter will drive normal for about 50 yards and then stay at 10 mph. the scooter feels like it wants to pull but studders. i took out the carb and did some cleaning but no difference.... any ideas or advice i can get would be greatly appreciated.
#1, make sure the airbox is installed and in good condition. Lots of people take those off and then they are so lean that they don't run well.
Check obvious things like wires and hoses. See if the spark plug looks fouled. Then I'd probably pop the CVT cover off and have a look unless it's seeming obviously rich.
www.49ccscoot.com/faq/symptoms.html
checked that, everything is installed no miles have been taken out.
Have you checked compression? Done a thorough inspection of the CVT?

i know this is an older video but can i have a link to the headlight you used? the stock one on my tao tao thunder (50cc) suck lol oh and the tac you used, its awesome lol and maybe a how to video on it :)
Here's a bunch of info on the Vapor (tach/speedo/etc...) :

I believe the 45W was from bulbtown.
Hello there! Where did you get the mount/holder that you used for the wide band gauge? The one that takes up the spot of the grocery bag hook.

I've still got 2 Tritons and Keeway plus the TaoTao. I'll send you a link.
90GTVert still got a triton?
What trail tech vapor are you using? I keep getting ' machine specific ' how is it wired?
TrailTech 752-402
I did a series about the Vapor with info, installation and setup. czcams.com/video/j6Z_hAhJJ2M/video.html
Hi I have a stock gy6 50cc. Belt sits down low on the pin up front But is down 5/8in in rear clutch. All at idle/ static. With new gates drive belt. 729 17.7 30. Stock size for long case. I did not measure the belt . I must be looking low end power. Could the belt length be out of spec that much? How do I measure the belt?
Here's how to measure a belt :

We all tune to increase speed and power but few consider pollution, durability and mileage economy, what do you think about this kind of tuning ?
In a lot of cases, you'd be better off to just leave it alone if those are your primary concerns. That said, you can tune the carb and CVT and make it work very well without having a big impact on those things. If you really want the best in all of those areas, you should probably forget the Chinese stuff and buy a Yamaha, Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia, etc... Particularly the newer fuel injected models. Just move up in displacement (buy a bigger scoot) if what those 50s does isn't enough. That's the sensible way. Not necessarily the fun way.
@@49ccscoot Actually I'm a gearhead trying to improve reliability by experimenting with cheap Chinese assemblies and then machine new parts and learn in the process, I'm also considering cheap chinese scooters as donor for my go Kart. BTW, great channel mate.
i have a question . i bought the orange unrestricted CDI box for my TaoTao EVO 150cc from scrappy dog scooters....and my RPM's max out at 7000. should it be higher ?
Might make power above that. You'd probably need lighter rollers. 7000-8000RPM is prob where it'll peak.
thank you
What scooter would you recommend that kinda cheap but reliable for someone wit out a licence?
#1 thing I'd recommend is to be sure you can operate a scooter or moped without a license. Some areas require a license, registration, insurance etc... for them and some don't.
Check my reply on your other comment. A lot of it is up to you and what you want from it.
@@49ccscoot thanks for the reply I want one for my primary vehicle since I can't afford a car you have any videos on maintenance or scooter reviews?
@@iamdeath5297 I've got all sorts of how tos if you check my channel. I don't really do scooter reviews. I would suggest getting a better quality scoot if you are depending on it. Yamaha, Honda, Vespa, Piaggio for example. Chinese scooters can be OK, but I wouldn't want to have to rely on one every day. Even a used quality scoot may be better, but it goes on a case by case basis there. My TaoTao has had oil leaks and variator problems and panels cracking and brake issues. It's got 5000 miles on it. Engine is pretty reliable stock, but so much of it is subpar that stuff is always gonna happen and that isn't great say when you're on your way to work.
A month ago I bought a brand new scooter 50cc taotao and now having so many problems. Bought a new carb, cdi, spark plug and wire. And I’m still having problems
Randomly replacing parts doesn't always work. May need to do some checks and try to find out what is wrong based on exact symptoms.
Yeah what he said... The tao tao 50cc are the easiest to build scoots. All them parts you got are good to have and upgread. Im green as shit with scoot building and i just did a 80% plug in build
If i can do it anyone can.. Hard part you will learn as you go.. Is knowing whats worng just bye sound.. But its easy to pick up i.e my 49.cc (50mm bbk build) mojo trike had some carb issues and i now know what to much gas or not enough gas sounds 👍 like..
Rocokkets are gy6 bikes aswell made in the same area same engine (139qmb gy6) has the Tao Tao the same exact parts that you claim to had problems with lol
Lol gy6 is gy6 "tao-tao" "icebear" whatever they are all about 95% identical under the plastic.
where did you get the speedometer
49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/8614/trail-tech-vapor-information-installation
i just got a taotao atm-50 and its nice overall but i found that with both my fiance and i riding and the rough roads in my area the air box would hit the fuel line on the diapraghm pump and cause a leak i ziptied the pump higher on the frame and it solved it but i was wondering if this is common
I'm not sure that your issue specifically is common, but placement problems aren't out of the ordinary on Chinese scooters.
@@49ccscoot so I just got back from a ride on my taotao and it was a little sluggish and had a clanking noise so I pulled the dipstick and oil sprayed out of the fill hole which leads me to think the vent is clogged any ideas
@@TheCalebf If the scooter was running, that's normal. If not, you'd be on the right track to check the hose coming from the valve cover vent and anything that it connects to. If you can't find and obstruction there, remove the valve cover and check it out.
@@49ccscoot yes the scooter was off and I found the culprit the vent hose was pinched in the car cover and thank you
Hello! Where can I buy the same speedometer?
Search for Trail Tech Vapor. Here's a bunch of info about it in a 3 part vid.
czcams.com/video/j6Z_hAhJJ2M/video.html
Is there anyway to up the speed a little faster
Check out the other updates. A big bore kit is usually a good power boost.
Would you recommend a taotao 49cc?
They're OK if you understand what you're getting. You are not getting a trouble-free vehicle that is top notch quality. You're getting something that can get you around if you are willing to put in some effort at times. For many it may be better to spend a bit more and get a Japanese, European or even Taiwan made scoot with a dealer network.
What he said. And as long as the 1st thing you do is change out all fuilds respect the break in do regular preventive maintenance keep a scheduled tune up it can last a long time. Not just for the money. But if you have the money going Italian made for best performance or Japanese for a lifetime scoot with good performance (in my opinion)
Why didn’t you try LED headlight bulb?
I did. It was junk. They have improved in the last 5 years though.
90GTVert what you mean junk? It was not bright enough or wouldn’t work at all ? And what do you use on it nowadays?
Will we get new updates this spring??
That's the plan. I never meant to neglect it last year, but I got a motorcycle license and a 150 and of course I always have my two-strokes. They make it harder to want to work on the comparatively slow TaoTao. Not making excuses, that's just how it went.
I just got a Taotao 49cc and have no experience with engines, is it OK to derestrict the airbox without tuning??
Well, nevermind about the airbox, completelly f#cked the ignition due to a defective handlebar lock...
The key broke inside the ignition and the handlebar lock was defective the mechanic said..
No. In most cases it will run lean. That creates more heat if it does run in a way that seems OK to you. It may not even want to accelerate and instead just surge when you apply heavy throttle.
***** about how much do you weight?
Tucker Ward ~290lb That's why the acceleration is slow.
All those gauges you habe r from the same company...like them little ones that you have or r those from a different site n company
They're from different places. The main "cluster" that does speed, RPM, and CHT is a Trail Tech Vapor. The wideband is made by Auto Meter. The oil temp is just some cheap generic Chinese gauge from eBay. The voltmeter/USB is by Stinger.
im 305 lbs with the same scooter as your's 2014 model with 80 cc BBK kit installed does help in traffic when you need to get out of the way im getting max gps speed of 54 mph im in the process of changing my dashboard to a new gauge cluster with this from gearbest www.gearbest.com/other-car-gadgets/pp_1253017.html?wid=1433363 very nice gauge cluster for only $26.70 and smaller then the orginal going to make up my own plate like you did would like to know if you could list the make and models of the intraments gauges that you have used like the O2 if you could post it Thanks Brian in Arkansas
I work on scooters for a living, along with elec cars, i live in Key West Fla and EVERYBODY has at least one scooter, The TaoTao is the worst POS scooter ever made period, personally i own 5 Harleys and 2 Kymcos, I have worked on every brand of scooter, I hate Italian made scooters, parts are stupid expensive, Spanish are better but not by much, If you want dependability Kymco, Yamaha and the old Hyosung Sense are the most reliable IMHO, i wish Hyosung would make scooters again.
