I always thought this duel resembles season 0 the closest, the time limit, the simple card mat gaming, a bit of magic and illusion.
To be fair, thats basically how all the duels looked like before Battle City came around.
But since Studio Gallop wanted the Duel Monsters anime to take a more technogical approach to it (likely to remain to remain consistent with BC) the aesthetic style has been morphed into the one we see through most of Season 1.
In other words, a accurate adaptation of Duelist Kingdom would have looked like exactly like this, but with the glass barriers we see in Death T-4 and Death T-5 from the.... well, Death-T arc.

I love how Yugi, by all accounts, should have won the match. But then he just loses because "Oh, the attack animation didn't play out all the way, so I win."

Arc-V basically canonised that. If your monster has a slow attack animation, you're at a disadvantage since your opponent has more time to grab Action Cards.
My favorite part is when Pegasus read his mind and just smirked. Atem saw that smirk and with no context second guessed himself. Its like purposefully sending a tell in poker to bluff the other person into thinking you have something
As someone who used to play aggro in Magic, "make them have it" is ingrained in my mind. Maybe they can stop your play this turn, maybe they can't. Unless your whole game hinges on that play, you make it, because if they can stop you this turn they can do it next turn (maybe to something more important), and if they can't you win.
Pegasus cheated, and he still only won because time ran out.

This is why Yugioh should have demanded they each get their own 7:30 timer. Otherwise, all Pegasus has to do is talk for 14 minutes and 59 seconds and be like "your turn", and unless he has exodia, he loses.

Ya know, it takes a moment of self-reflection to realize the first major duel in the anime (Season 0 notwithstanding) ended by RUNNING OUT OF TIME. Which is wild, given how rarely duels even have a timer.
Magic aside, given how yugi is dueling vs a vhs tape that tape wouldn't have enough film to play without a time limit lol
Still very funny to think how the duel only took like, 7 or 8 turns but it somehow managed to last over 15 minutes worth of gameplay.
Thats the power of talking with your opponent I guess.

I have to disagree. The first time Strings vs Yugi came on TV, that was hype and tense. Yea, we were kids, but it WAS tense.

I love how creative this! the addition of the ticking clock is great. I love how short the duels are when they're not shit talking each other lmao. something about this kind of drives home how much duels rely on chance.

Pegasus couldn’t see the no tribute summon dark magician coming because he forgets that nobody knows the rules of the game in this anime

It's so... relaxing. I almost fell asleep watching this. I love it.
Realistically, if there was no talking or dialogue, Yugi wins this duel easily. Yugi was so close but Pegasus just knew how to draw out the timer so in this version of the game the result would have been entirely diferent.
I like the part when Yugi instead of summoning his monster he just deciedt to pick up a card and set it in face down attack-position during his mainphase 1. I never knew you could do that. Just drawing a card and setting it in face down attack position. Has anyone ever tried this during a tournament?
It's apart of the really really old rules where they were very flimsy and not yet understood, you can see this also in Yugioh forbidden memories where the same old duelist kingdom rules are somewhat applied.
He really did just play it in face down attack position. I edited out Pegasus' turn from the show, and tried to make it look like Yugi was just waiting a second to flip the card face up and normal summon in attack position lol
The rules in Duelist Kingdom were very flimsy, you didn't need sacrifices to summon monsters either. It's not until Battle City that the main rules of the game were set in stone.
@@acefp I found that to be pretty clever editing, as it sort of gets around the "rule" while also still showing the whole "countering his mind reading" thing.

The art style of Yami really looks like Season Zero Yami here in this duel.
Also you get the vibe of the Season Zero Yami here too with how he tries to get around Pegasus' Millennium Eye advantage.
Yami's confidence here is huge, and shows that Pegasus, for all his overpowered cards and slimy strategies, can in fact be beaten - foreshadowing the result in the Duelist Kingdom final.
Bro can I just say that Pegasus had some fucking drip in this episode

I've tried many times to rewatch the yugioh series because i loved it in my chilhood, but the enormous amount of childish fillery chitchatter in between every move always bores me out of my skull. These videos actually are very straight forward and entertaining to watch!
that's just how every anime is though, unless they suddenly realise they've got a lot of plot to squeeze in (looking at you, Attack on Titan)
Never really seen that. I do think the story of Yugioh, especially the first 2 (and a half) seasons, was quite good. If their 'in between talking' was substantial or diverse i could maybe bare it but after watching half a season of "you can do it Yugi!", "Our friendship is super duper special!" and "Shadowrealm, shadowrealm, shadowrealm hahahhaha." it gets old fast for adults. For children it's great. That's just the nature of it i guess, i'm 28 now haha. Oh well, if this youtuber turns all these duels into this format at least we'll get to recapture it in some way.@@keepitsecret-dl1pr

I think they overlooked the eyes obvious time skipping abilities in the anime. There's no way that was 15 minutes
The only unrealistic part of this scene is that Yugi doesn't start screaming in pain when he gets up realizing his leg fell asleep.
