I Kissed A Stone And They Wiped It - Episode 6, 29th March - Cork to Waterford

- A late train to Waterford means a day of exploring Cork and beyond. After a quick concert courtesy of the brand new station piano, it's To The Buses! Geoff explores a nearby disused railway line, while Vicki has a date with a certain lucky stone...
Vicki and Geoff are travelling to 198 railway stations in Ireland and Northern Ireland!
All The Stations - Ireland sees the duo exploring the length and breadth of the Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.
To The Book! "The Railway Adventures" is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here: www.amzn.com/1910463876
You can see a progress map and station count on the website: www.allthestations.co.uk/
"play anything"
*Plays the Father Ted theme/Songs of Love*
Ah, Ireland.
He's a legend!!
Giving the English what they came for.
I came here to type this exact thing. 🤣 Had me laughing.
At least it wasnt 'My lovely horse'....they've got to lose that sax solo! 🤣🤣

Me: Vicki cheats on Geoff with a stone!!
Geoff: We're over!
"I Kissed A Stone And They Wiped It", great lyrics for a Katie Perry track. (heh heh)
That's how it played in my head 😂
Can we just fund Viki to do an "All the castles" as a spin off series 🤔
"It's less than 200." Now I want to see one of those station pianos at some rainy little request stop out in the middle of nowhere. Slowly getting moldy and out of tune.
Vicki can tick off another station,
the former Blarney station is now the souvenir shop at the edge of the castle grounds ,
you would have walked past it on the way from the Bus.....
The Limerick Junction to Waterford service used to run four times a day, then it was cut to three, then two. The line used to continue beyond Waterford to Rosslare before the line closed in 2010.
At Limerick Junction, when the trains arrive from Limerick and Waterford they must wait for the Cork to Dublin & Dublin to Cork intercity trains to pass before making their return leg because of the connecting services between these four trains.
At Waterford there are four platforms. Platforms 3 & 4 were closed permanently after a landslide, and platform 6 is never used. They're intending to relocate the station in Waterford about 750 meters eastward.
Seems to be a lack of "slack" in the system around that area.
When one train gets delayed, everything grinds to a halt?
@@dorsettyke Limerick Junction is a station in the middle of nowhere and is used for passengers needing to change trains who would be travelling from Limerick to Cork or Thurles to Clonmel. The trains to Limerick and Waterford must wait until the two intercity trains running between Cork and Dublin have arrived because their passengers are on those two trains.
@@phillipwilloughby5013 , thanks. I sort of realised that, but Geoff implied that their Waterford train was held up because it couldn't get onto the platform because the other train was waiting for the connection to come in.
Also at the end of the journey, because they were delayed previously, they were delayed again, unable to get to the platform. :-)
@@dorsettyke Geoff maybe didn't realise that the Waterford train waits for connections just like the Limerick one. And because they were late arriving in Waterford a train from Dublin had already arrived and the station in Waterford uses only one platform (which Geoff had mentioned) because the station in Waterford is at the bottom of a cliff and five years ago there was landslide on new years eve which happened about 15 minutes before a train was due to arrive so the platform nearest to the cliff was permanently closed which explains the fence along the platform edge you'd see in the background when they arrived in Waterford.
Last time I was at Limerick Junction when the train from Waterford arrived the Limerick train would arrive behind it on the same platform. The old trains had two cars and the new trains have three so I guess that platform isn't long enough to accommodate both trains.
@@phillipwilloughby5013 :-) As I said, not enough slack in the system.
All looks great though. Would love to travel the system one day!
This series is excellent, really good. Mightily impressed with the trains too.
13:45 the gift of the gab = the ability to speak easily and confidently in a way that makes people want to listen to you and believe you:
For the non English speakers, I had to look it up myself ! you are welcome ;-)
I think the "though Geoff would probably disagree" was an innuendo... ;)
@@lukeeclair7736 Innuendo = an allusive or oblique remark or hint, typically a suggestive or disparaging one. ;-))
Yeah - generally a normal phrase which can have a sexual connotation 😁
This makes me miss Ireland so badly. Being from The States, a car wasn't really an option when we visited, so a lot of these stations are familiar, and watching this brings back alot of nostalgia, particularly the platform in Waterford.
the Legend playing the Father Ted theme
At the moment, the highlight of my day is watching your latest video. I hadn't realised how much I missed you guys. Keep up the good work, happy travels!
I know the feeling. Loving the fast turnaround and editing, that’s some slick and brilliant teamwork!
Had a really bad day at work - but Vicki and Geoff always but a smile on my face
vicki's Irish is pretty impressive....and well resarched
That piano guy was really cool :D Great video again Geoff and Vicki!!!
A lot of people call that a tourist trap. I call it a magical lucky stone. Also that pop up piano reminds me of the one in Glasgow where you played the All The Stations theme
One could say that it gets lucky all the time, the bloody stone.
But maybe it doesn't like all those kisses, what if it want to go steady, to create a rock solid foundation with one stone of the giant causeway?
I would call it Irelands biggest tourist trap...I live about 10km away and have never been lol
Enjoy Waterford lovely city with plenty off history. Can't believe you have nearly had a week in Ireland with no rain. Keep up the good work
As suggested, the pronunciation of Cahir, is Care.
Knowing that Vicky loves castles, she would have been in heaven looking around Carhir Castle.
I know, he didn’t get off the train properly anywhere in Tipperary (other than limerick junction)
Really love ALL THE STATIONS both series. As an American living in Massachusetts, I appreciate getting to see part of every-day life in both GB and Ireland.
Geoff there are two ways to pronounce "Mahon" in Cork. The posh way is "Mah-hun" and the slightly more earthy way is "Mahhhn".
Vicki, thanks for visiting my families' castle. They still charge me an entry fee which I find outrageous.
Adam McCarthy any connection to Cormac McCarthy, the author?
Very weird having seen all your London videos that you stopped in my hometown of Clonmel. The videos make me want to visit, but in fact I live here. Thanks guys!
Clonmel. "Hey Pilning. It's got a footbridge". Poor Pilning. :(
I thought I heard that, couldn't believe it, so paused to replay it. I know Pilning well.
While watching your last episode was genuinely worried ye wouldn’t have a look at cork properly.. and then Geoff jumps on the 202 and heads down to black rock to have a look at the old railway that runs right next to my family home . Colour me impressed.
Its just brilliant as a train a station nut from ireland
Got to love Geocaching! Takes you places.
Vicky has no fear of heights, that much is clear.
Roll cr!
See you guys tomorrow.
6 episodes to get the first father ted reference
Been waiting all day for upload...Brilliant as ever...
Beautiful!
Enjoying this series so far! Excited to see the rest
Well done on kissing the stone Vicki. I went there but I'm terrified of heights. Took me 10 minutes of dithering to pluck up the courage
Very enjoyable. Looking forward to more episodes.😁
'...even when they make mistakes they feel bad about it.'
I really wish they did that on South Western Railway.
Loving these videos and you even have sunshine !
That Blarney Stone was a long way up... about 15 storeys, I reckon.
Good stuff. As always. Thank you. A++
Kent Station in Cork was the filming location for the Great train robbery film starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland, where it doubled for Folkestone (Which coincidentally is in Kent)
If anyone was wondering, the GVs refers to the general views around montage, other abbreviations are a bit more obvious like Pan for panorama, CU for close up, ECU extreme close up, ELS extreme long shot, TS tracking shot and then there's the swish pan, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!
Thank you for explaining! I was wondering :) Good to know!
Great to see you seeing the sights of Cork!
I am really enjoying your travels
Wonderful break-0ut day, video cuts right-on (!!)
Lovely idea great videos and nice to see my own heritage told in a different light..
Liking the new "Explorations, explorations" motif for Vicki Explores!
Watched...enjoyed...tick :)
Vicki with even more of the gift of the gab is a sight wondrous to behold!
Great video love the videos so far keep up the great work and stay safe Vicky and Geoff.
Really enjoying this series of Irish videos, this is quality stuff, really well done. And the piano player is wonderful :)
Really enjoying your Irish adventures.
Bonus Videos 👍 💕 Watched this with my 10 month old granddaughter your newest/youngest fan...she approves😊...we are loving this! 💕Big tick ✔ You guys are doing such a wonderful job! lots of love...take care!
Before Vicky entered Blarney Castle she would have passed the Terminalus of the Muskerry Tram. The platform is still there station is a shop now.
First time I asked someone in Ireland for directions, he pointed out to my right and started with "Well, you'll not be goin that way"!
Life affirmingly wonderful - so it is.....
You mislabeled 'Tipperary' at 10:32 as Cork (Kent).
@@geofftech2 Argghh, the pain
Especially egregious since, as everyone knows, it's a long way to Tipperary.
Cahir also has a lovely castle one of the best in the country
I know Cork and the area well from childhood holidays, the people are first class as is All The Stations. You doing such a great job, Bravo !
Love Cork Market Vicki and Geoff great video presentation 10 out of 10
The event at Limerick Junction is exactly what happened to me whilst I was there.
Had my evening fix!
Fun fact: Carrick on suir is the least used station in Ireland. Hopefully Geoff does a video on it for his least used stations series on his channel
Made my day seeing the old station at Blackrock, my grandparents live around the corner from there and we walk along the track every summer when we visit
You two always have a great time...!!! 😀🔝👍
Oh hello, doubledeckeranton
@@imtiazrahman1977 ..hi there
Great to hear that you are geocachers too and
you are absolutely right! Geocaches are halping alot to get informations and they give you a different sight
on places you are standing at. No matter how simple a fact or a detail might be :)
Greetings from Germany
9:40 might be one of the best shots in film history.
At 2:05, I am applauding all by myself in my kitchen: what a good interpretation of a really great tune!
Love the edit on roll cred... at the end
We went to Ireland, my wife kissed the stone but I'm already blessed with more than my fair share of the gift of "gab" and I was told I don't need ANY help or encouragement. Enjoying your travels, be safe. Peace from the states.
Classy station in Cork...🎶🎼🎶
The all the stations theme was nice!
Love the way you cut the GVs on to the VT.
Thanks for another entertaining episode, and I trust Vicki's osculation at Blarney has delivered her desired measure of articulate loquaciousness 😀
The best part of Blarney Castle is the sweaters on the trees.
Very much enjoying this series. Well done ye both are sound..looking forward to you stopping at Newbridge my home town
I'm from Naas myself, though live in London now!
Cork is lovely. I never appreciated it as a younger man but the older I get the more I appreciate it.
Hope you can take your time to do more locale exploring.
11:37 - Oh there are beautiful dialects, and there's Scottalk. I cannot stop listening to her.
God you guys are great, so cute!
Very enjoyable video! I did a day trip to Waterford from Limerick once. I love how the train departs Limerick Junction and then reverses. I alway think it's funny Waterford Plunkett has only one platform but it's Platform 5, that's of course because there were more platforms once. Waterford also has the only elevated signal box in Ireland!
As someone who used to live in Pilning that cut me deep!!
Also I lived there for eight years and never once saw a train stop at the station so... I guess the footbridge comment is deserved.
When we got to Blarney Castle, the line was FOUR hours long. I blew the Stone a kiss and explored the Victorian Fairy Garden on the grounds.
Kudos to Dan, great editing! City and Blarney GVs (Geoff Vickys) were awesome
Irish trains look fun.
Best title.
Man I miss riding the trains in Ireland.......Did Dublin-Galway and Galway-Limerick. The trains themselves are fairly basic, but the views of the Irish countryside were amazing!!!!!!!!
♪ THEY WIPED IIIIIIT!!! ♫
For my summer holiday in June 2015, I went on a road trip around the southern end of the Republic Of Ireland, including two nights in Blarney. Like Vicki, I too visited Blarney Castle and kissed the stone too despite my fear of heights! But, as it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I just had to do it! I visited one railway in the Republic Of Ireland, the Lartigue Monorail; a very bizarre railway indeed!
Hi started watching your videos with the greystones one last week .I heard you both on the radio with Brenda the other day.Now i have to watch the full series.enjoy!
thanks Dazza, good to have you here!
@@AllTheStations its all good.
@@AllTheStations likewise.
Good title!!!!
I think the Blue Hue will follow you forever :)
Dublin-Cork line only, and not even all of those trains, just the loco-hauled ones.
It’s ma ( as in par) hon .
And I’m watching this while working in Mahon!
Did I see an All The Stations factsheet in the girl's hand? Great idea :)
I read the title to “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry.
Incidentally, mentioning the narrow gauge railway, Geoff could have pointed out that the main line is "broad gauge" - at 5' 3"
I thought you might’ve mentioned the line from Waterford to Rosslare! It’s still exists, but isn’t used very often!
8:39 almost sounds like a type of intro for 'Jingle Bell Rock".
Big and important Dutch trainstations also have an piano installed. Does this mean you and Vicky are going to do an All the station The Netherlands? Don't you worry, 99% procent of the trainstations here have atleast an hourly service, going to and from the stations.
All the Stations NL should really be next as there is a Sail-Rail ticket to Hoek van Holland!
Seamless
So when are you doing "All The Stations - Australia"?
As an Australian, I've been thinking about this since 2017. It would be a hell of an exercise. Just little quirks like the Gulflander, would be an utter b***tard to plan for.
I reckon there are more stations in Melbourne ALONE than in all of Ireland. It'd be a long trip
I don't think that'll be happening any time soon...
Vicky, if you like the castels you can come to Peles castel (dracula castel) in Sinaia ,Romania. Is amazing
Yay Ireland
We visited Cork three years ago after travelling to Cobh and Kimsale. English market in Cork was fantastic. Don’t know if you are visiting Kinsale as there is a castle there.
Some of those trains are decked out in John Deere livery. And someone needs to move the Blarney Stone down a bit to expose a fresh surface. That one is rather worn! :D
I thought you were heading to Blackrock Castle when I saw the 202 bus! Vicki missed on!
Better you than me Vicki. I'm scared of heights AND being upside down. So the Blarney Stone is a no-no for me.
Need a all the stations piano
Somewhere
Times change, I kissed the stone 40+ years ago, from memory few if any other tourists and certainly no photos to prove I did.
Occasionally I have rested in talking since then. 😌
