Youtube Hardly Ever Points Out When You're Wrong - Episode 15, 8th April - Dublin to Belfast

- It's the penultimate day’s train trek (where has the time gone?!) and Geoff and Vicki are heading towards Belfast, a journey up the east coast that will take them over the border into Northern Ireland for the first time. On the way we visit Malahide castle, see the sights of Balbriggan, and tick off TWO awkward Stations no less. To the North!
All The Stations - Ireland sees Vicki and Geoff exploring the length and breadth of the 198 railway stations of Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.
Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.com/gb/album/all... (other stores are available...)
To The Book! "The Railway Adventures" is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here: www.amzn.com/1910463876
You can see a progress map and station count on the website: www.allthestations.co.uk/
“Did you notice the extra six inches”
*gives the side glance to camera*
You know what you did
Congratulations Geoff on the best one liner from the entire series. You know the one I mean. Very funny.
Yes! it was so naughty my jaw hit the floor!!
The width of gauge question by any chance lololol I noticed that 1, and the straight face, fancy asking your wife that haha, deffo something I'd do.....
Geoff must have had some serious balls to ask that question to his wife *and* have the whole of CZcams watch him ask that...!
The reaction on Vicki's face when a special announcement was made for her and Geoff on 12.45-13.05 😘❤
she lit up like a Christmas tree.
...the dividend of fame...
I stand by my point she’s the happiest person I’ve ever come across - she has so much positive energy
@@DevonPixie1991 so would I with all the money she gets
@@cookiee45007 No, you'd probably be miserable with immense riches.
Not noticed the extra 6” - cut to Geoff 😂
Wont know what to do with my evenings once all the stations have been ticked
make your own travel series. i am touring the PVTA. czcams.com/play/PL_tCKq6Z3o-Mez2BiLjdRuq28r_hV1Aqo.html
You get used to having this really quickly, don't you?
Well... here's to hoping it gets them all of the fame they need to do ALL the stations.
Lets ship them off to mainland Europe! Switzerland could be great, other places too :)
campain for the opening of more stations
The last few seconds of the video must've corrupted. Vicky & Geoff, have you not gone and done Tara Street yet!?! 😜
All the stations. That was quick! Only Northern Ireland to go already!
Nicholas Tryand Northern Ireland is a tiny country I would say only 2 more videos left 👎
I checked their site to see when they went to a station in the town one of my Northern Irish friends lives I saw they went there on the 10th, so yesterday. The 10th was also the last travel day :(
Loved this. Every minute of it. I'll be bereft next week with nothing to look forward to. Thanks guys! I'm not even a train enthusiast but I do like castles.
If Irish Rail and NI rail have any sense they'll sell special 'All the Stations' rambler tickets.
That viaduct across the seafront is amazing!
The Malahide viaduct collapsed some years ago, and needed extensive repair. The Boyne river viaduct in Drogheda is still going strong.
@@qwertyTRiG Balbriggan
Ah, Tara Street... The Isle of Wight within Ireland. One day you'll get to visit both!
It's kind of a shame Brunel didn't win and 7 foot gauge didn't become the standard. Just imagine Britain and Ireland traversed by these gigantic trains.
That announcement when you where crossing over to ni railways says it all so proud to leave England and work in Northern Ireland that’s how it is here. Beautiful people welcome to the best part of ireland
You should definitely do All the Stations in Germany. Although all the (local) trains operated by DB are equipped with the same moquettes, there are many private rail companies (some of which only serve a single line) with individual moquettes!
I love the trains in Germany. Finally got to use one two years ago on a trip to Remagen, the one I was on even had air con! I especially love the double decker trains.
Just came here from Tom Scott's game show. This is a goldmine of content, I love it!
I watched this daily! Thank you!
You've been so lucky with the weather!! Such a beautiful place and even more beautiful in the sunshine! X
Broad gauge = Best gauge. We use it in the state of Victoria in Australia, as well as the metro system in South Australia. The two systems used to be connected until the standardisation of the line in 1995.
12:35 "CZcams sensations, Geoff and Vicki"
Again, nice work by Dan & Dan! One of my favourite 2019 episodes so far in terms of editing. Perfect mix of dialogues and interviews, interior and exterior train shots, panoramas, landscape and sightseeing scenes, and of course All the Stations! Everything very well connected by the different moods Stevens music provides.
I guess that's the perfect opportunity to thank All the Background-Team! Will, Dan and Michelle as well as 'Mission Control' and all the others. Hope you keep up the excellent work on future projects. 👍
I cried when All the stations GB and j will cry when they finish Ireland and be proud! My mum cannot believe that u can do that!
I love the architecture of the stations on the line between Dublin and Dundalk. Especially Balbriggan and Dundalk. The brick work of the stations is fabulous
There's similar in Lisburn, but sadly most of Northern Ireland's historic stations have been demolished or rebuilt
you both make train trek look so much fun you work so well together..
Made me feel at home a little, thanks guys 👌🏻
I'm just back from Ireland by train. and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Superb stuff.
Another great video. Shame there's not much more to.go. Really been enjoying this series.
LOVE THAT YOU WENT TO NORTHERNI IRELAND!!
Loved the warp effect at 10:25 🚀
Very good! Love the Enterprise trains!
you two are now officially youtube sensations
I've got SOOOOO good at saying 'All the Stations' in a robotic voice in the last 2 years! What a surprise!
Excellent video as always! I really enjoyed the timelapse! I usually like real time journey videos but there is something about timelapses that I love!
Geoff confirms those miracle growth ads are true
From Finaghy which got a brief shot :) used to have a lovely brick road bridge but it got covered by ugly metal over fears of cars crashing onto the line. Silly.
12:50 She's blushing. Bless her LOL
I've watched Geoff (and Vicki) for years, and it's so weird that you actually in Scarva! :O
As always G & V great fun/crack and an informative micro-doco. I vaguely remember going on a seaside holiday in Rush in the late 60's and watching a wall of impenetrable sea fog slide up the beach, to again quote me mammy "with your mouth open like a Malahide cod waiting for the tide to come in"
I went to Malahide with friends as a day trip on the train during a long weekend in Dublin. Nice castle with a very good tour and ornamental gardens.
We were in Malahide in May 2018, at the same time as Ireland's first ever cricket test match was held there (v Pakistan); unfortunately we hadn't time to go to the match.
The actor Patrick Malahide took his stage name from his home town.
I think you're wrong about that CZcams thing.
Honestly.... wonderful video's, love your humour...
I watched all your UK stuff, but for me this Ireland stuff was brilliant.

These have been such fun. I am going to miss my daily video when it’s all over so soon!
The cutest yet, but only because the 5ft 3ins gauge finally got mentioned! Thanks Vicky and Geoff, and all your back room people, for a great series!
Good Video and Commentary Geoff and Vicki!😃.
Love the PA message!
Thanks for finally showing us Tara Street station. It was my wife's birthday yesterday so I only saw the video this morning after I had noted the map update. One more episode to go. You will be missed in Ireland.
I loved the Star Trek warp zoom off with The Enterprise. Very good. And what a great Series of All The Stations. Cheers! By the way, we have Translink for our local integrated transport service in Brisbane.
another great video and to see a infamous or famous line for all the wrong reason during the height off the troubled as it was bomb so often. Must say just more great places to visit and very informative video. Seems sad it will end soon
Railroad gauges are like plug outlets for me in that I don't understand why they haven't been standardised the whole world over.
Boldly going where they haven't gone before !!
From Boston, MA USA: My son and I love your videos. And we are very jealous of your train system over there! Thanks for doing this. Side note, you are both gems, and inspirational. Also, unlike so many other transport vlogers/program makers, you know how to produce and edit. Thank you!
BJ Murray DART has the same faregates as the T.
Now we see, it isn't just Geoff who fancies purple! In other news, the background music had a very pleasant Irish lilt, Bravo!
2:58 that gaze speaks for itself
As an Englishman with a Northern Irish partner who's ridden Translink a lot...enjoy Belfast to Derry. Especially the most unnecessarily over-the-top-ornate footbridge and wiggly river ramp at any railway station ever at my partner's hometown, Ballymoney. Crossing that on the ramp takes far longer than it needs to. (Also, if you stop there, the Joey Dunlop memorial just up the hill is lovely).
Look out for the glorious beaches in Portrush (East Strand especially).
I really enjoy this series and was really looking forward to when you were coming into Northern Ireland ( bc I’m from Belfast of course 😂)
Irish Rail met you off the ferry at Rosslare, retweeted and tweeted about you tons of times on Twitter too! :)
You don't notice the extra 6.5 inches in width as carriages are usually off the shelf, built for British gauge and placed on 5'3" bogies.
Love the announcement 😍
My mind is now at rest , Tara Street Complete ;) , I was wondering .....
they didnt go to tara street at all in the end :(
@@sgt_salt Is that somewhere near Shanklin?
It's a CGI; just like the I.o.W.
no we've still not been. we faked it.
Hence the wink. :) @@AllTheStations
Now that is one route I have never done slow, always on the Enterprise
And that’s why i love translink, super kind and always on time
So nice to see my former commute and a little bit of Donabate station, former resident here! :)
✅ Loved every second of this one! Nice shot of the viaduct with the train crossing! The music was really well done! I wish Ireland was bigger so there'd be more stations! 😊 ...take care!
k Dean Ireland used to have many more stations. The network was decimated:-(
Belfast is beautiful. Make sure to go to the hall at night it’s so beautiful
Well done Translink!
for "have an adventure" i already had booked that weekend (before the announcement) to see a new light rail in canberra, the capital city of australia, south of sydney
Oh you bastard! Sneaking Tara Street at the tail end of a video (and keeping it grey on your map to maintain suspense). Well done on reaching ALL the stations!
we're all about the suspense, Darren! :-D
Interesting border crossing here. Great show, please do more countries :)
oh the old waiting room at dundalk is a charmer
Travelled frequently on the ENTERPRISE from Belfast to Dublin and often seen Scarva flash by and wondered if any trains ever stopped there - now I know. Thanks guys for a 'fun' videoclip. See you at Doleham?
Yay!! Dundalk! Close to where my family are from apparently there was a station in the town of carrickmacross but that closed years ago
From Lisburn and let me say, you were lucky with the train times haha
And at the end at Tara Street ...
Squeaky Door Set .... Tick 😉😂
Just note : Belfast Lanyon Place is actually Belfast Central, it was renamed randomly
I spotted near the start of the video that they had gone to Tara Street Station, when they were talking to the first person in the video. From the view outside the train, as I know the view along that section of the line so well.
eagle-eyed! heh he.
A train leaving on time is easy. Was in Koln waiting for a train and it rolled in and came to a stop at exactly the scheduled time. (to the second)
This is just so good, and so professional, that I wonder how soon before old beggars like me are saying you were more fun in the old days (2017)? Performance, filming and editing all as good as anything on the internet. Music just nearing genius (though editing helped). I want to buy the All The Stations Ireland soundtrack album. If it had bits of dialogue I'd want it more.
Glyn, it's available here:

Loved the acknowledgement from the conductor! But was anyone else even on the train? You seemed to have the one carriage to yourself. :)
The Irish gauge was adopted in the Australian states of South Australia and Victoria
And we never learnt the lessons of Ireland and England and decided to almost make a different gauge for every bloody state, in Australia.
@@bsmith2053 A lot of that is simply down to the fact that we were still seperate self-governing colonies when Railway Mania hit in the mid 1800's, and each one had their own ideas. Hindsight is 20/20 for sure, but at the time, the thought of a united "Australia" was still decades away.
At least Ireland (being an island) is physically separated from Britain and the continent by the sea, so connecting the railways physically was never going to be an issue, unlike in Australia.
However, the use of a different gauge does make things more difficult when procuring rolling stock. If they used standard gauge it would be easier and cheaper to buy trains "off the shelf" or even second hand from Britain. And they could export their own trains elsewhere.
2:58 - That look Geoff 😂
Geoff... you said no Star Trek jokes and then went into warp speed as you left Newry... shameless..:-)
I hope you enjoyed drogheda!
Hi Geoff love your videos. By the way if you come back over to England and hop on the Euston station mainline and just before Crewe is a overground train and Elizabeth line train to the right facing forwards. Near the signal box I think, not too sure where about exactly.
Yey! Scarva, my adopted station and it was the last awkward one.
7:20 et al: Do you lug around a drone around on your trip too?
That’s amazing devotion! ⭐️❤️🇮🇪
And hello from one of the other two (as far as I know; South East Queensland, Australia being the other) regions with a "translink" transportation agency! Ours is TransLink, which covers the the metro region of Vancouver, Canada.
Some of us in other parts (cough, cough, GTA) of Canada are watching the whole spectacle that is TransLink and the SkyTrain debacle, et al. Not to shine any light on the farce that is Metrostinx here, of course.... :)
Translink here in Northern Ireland run all the buses and trains so they operate the following: Northern Ireland railways
Metro (Bus service in Greater Belfast)
Glider- continuous east to west Belfast bus that looks like a tram only difference from the metro buses is you pay b4 you board from a ticket machine
Ulsterbus
Ulsterbus goldliner services within NI and cross border services to the Republic of Ireland
Enterprise (cross border train to and from Dublin to Belfast) www.translink.co.uk
@@stanpatterson5033 Luckily, the TransLink ship seems to be righting itself as of late - especially since they brought in a new CEO a few years ago who used to run KC Metro, Seattle's local transit system - and after equally hearing about the situation at Metrolinx, I have an similar amount of sympathy for you guys in the GTA. Our situation still isn't great, but I get the impression that now Metrolinx is back to being worse-off than us; correct me if I'm wrong. cheers.
@@PS-ru2ov Wow, quite the variety of different services under one umbrella, similar to our government-owned TransLink which administers 3 companies which in turn run 4 modes of transportation, with an added and controversial P3 (public-private partnership) rapid transit line. Thanks for the information about all of NI's different transit modes under your Translink, I had no idea that there are so many.
I've crossed Drogheda viaduct many times. The Gaelic name Droichead Átha translates as Bridge Town.
Geoff it is such a pity that you failed to say anything about the Enterprise which is a very unique train as it is not owned by Irish Rail or Northern Ireland Railways but is jointly operated by both companies with no logos on the outside but both companies logos on the inside of the train in the past few years the Enterprise underwent something like a 180 million refurbishment and throughout the troubles the train ran with only a few stoppages due to bombs at kilnasaget bridge.
Wasn't there also an attempt to steal the mail from the Enterprise in the early 80's? Attributed to an IRA splinter cell that had gone corrupt?
Your pronunciation of Poyntzpass the first time was pretty much spot on. It's pronounced like 'points pass'
Seems Ireland can manage new trains with comfortable seats!
M Collier why not ?
@@user-ky6vw5up9m just a shame the British government can't!
Looks like you totally did Tara St - respect!
A nice lady called Cathal :P
Poyntzpass, as far as I know, the only place in Ireland with a 'Z' in the name.
That's a good piece of trivia.
Theres a place in Tipperary called Crazy Corner. But it doesn't have a station
Hey Billy, I found a Crazy Corner in West Meath in the list of Irish place names book too. There's several letters in the English alphabet that don't appear in Gaelic Q X Z for example. Poyntzpass was named after an English Soldier called Poyntz who served in the area.
I was in Dundalk yesterday haha :)
Although I presume this was recorded a few days ago.
Thanks for pronouncing Newry and Poyntzpass correctly 😂
I noticed the diesel sound all of a sudden in the Northern Irish train.
Does the Republic of Ireland have electrified rails? If so, why didn't I notice in all of those videos so far?
Such a sweet message!
Hello Northern Ireland!
As far as I know the only electrified railway line in Ireland is the Dart system. One of the earliest hydro-electric powered tramways in the world was the Portrush to Giants Cuaseway tram, which closed around 1949.
You missed out on Dundalk. One of the nicest stations in the country and a fantastic museum literally feet from the train you were on
MIxed feelings: love this video but it brings us closer to the end ;-( ¿ Quo Vadis ?
You should do the Ellesmere Port to Manchester Victoria once a week parliamentary service as it’s a new one.
The Translink trains actually have 2 different types Moquette. Priority Seats have the same design, but the colours is more purple.
How delightful was that announcement?!
That’s settled things, now that you have done Tara Street
