You prepare during peace. When war starts preparation time is up. Once war begins you play with your dealt hand.
Well, no, when war starts you have to rely on allies to ramp up production as well as your own nation. Today Sweden is a NATO nation, an invasion attempt would end Russia within a week, just before the USA considers deciding whether they too are bound by Article 5.
As long as we have "snus" we Swedes will continue the fight.
And if we don't have it, just say that there is some behind enemy lines and the enemy will wish they had been born in 1895 instead...
@@SonsOfLorgar Heh, yeah I'm not a pleasant man when I run out of snus so that checks out.
HAHA damn right
The whole idea about defending Sweden during the Cold War were that the Soviet Union would not attack Sweden unprovoked. It would be a part of a larger war against NATO. Russia would need to get to Norway and Denmark to block NATO and Sweden would be in the way and this was really the scenario we planned for. This also meant that we would get help from the US and NATO to defend Sweden and Gotland because it would be in their own interest to keep the Soviets away.
That's why we maintained the neutrality doctrine for so long. But when Russia attacked Ukraine unprovoked everything pretty much changed. Russia showed that they could attack pretty much any country and as a couple of the few non NATO members Sweden and Finland had to rethink our position and NATO seemed like the best option.
Edit: Here's a documentary in 2 parts about the Swedish nuclear weapons programme. Might be fun to take a look at: czcams.com/video/0t4H0-Zb53Y/video.html
Edit: There's photos of people in row boats in those oil reservoars. They were huge.

What’s with the strange cuts to the video? Lots of material is gone it seems.
Could be material that has been redacted as it was seemed still sensitive?
Unfortunately, most of the stockpiled stuff was disposed of by incineration. When the "threat was over" as the Cold War ended (if it ever really did) a lot of these plans where thrown out the window. So those huge warehouses filled with everything from food to gas masks for the population, where emptied and the contents incinerated.
The dismantling operation of our defenses was quite thorough between the 1990-2010's, but finally our government has decided to start up a lot of the old preparedness-stuff again.
So stupid. Im born 1980 so i was just a kid when the iron curtain fell, but i remember how angry my father was with the politicians and the voters that made this stupidity happen.
A lot was sold. I bought a dozen bed sheets and two dozen towels.
Surplus tools were fucking goated. Military tire irons, shovels, axes, pickaxes, etc. was made to endure over half a century of conscript usage. Best tools I've ever purchased. Way better than the chinesium pot metal tire iron I had to buy years later for the car my good iron wasnt in... hell, I have a few military shovels from the 1920's.
Bought tons of stuff when P18 shut down.
@@w0t3rdog me too :)
Practically everything in this entire series still exists in active use... Not in Sweden, but in Finland.
Never heard of us having schools or other buildings prepared to be turned into hospitals or underground factories, but I think those are the only things described in these episodes that are not actively in place in Finland until this day.
Not being fooled by a sleeping bear, just waiting to wake up again... its really strange that Sweden of all countries allowed themselves wishful thinking of everlasting peace and a benign Russia as a neighbor considering the very long history of conflict compared to a blip in time when Russia was weak.
@@kronop8884 Yeah that's usually how I describe it. The Europeans looked at a hibernating bear and thought it dead.
It's a disaster that us Swedes are not as prepared as the Finns anymore. Especially if Finland got invaded so we could and be able to help them with all we had.
Sweden is rebuilding the civil defence and some infrastructure are being upgraded now.
@@petter5721the general public is such a short sighted people. Anyone with a little intelligence would have understood that the eternal peace was just a dream. I have been pro NATO my entire life, only now have the general opinion shifted.
As Mike Tyson said: you have a plan until you get the first punch in your face.
Just have to say, as a Swede I've watched this before but unusually enough someone is adding valuable commentary to it. So +1 and I'll subscribe to this channel.
Also, I don't know if you get quite what a Swede would do for snus. :P
Thank you 🙏 🤙 appreciate the view and sub.
I’ve heard they’ll do a lot for it lol
@@CombatReadyHQ Oh yeah, we are a peaceful people but we were prepared to leave the EU over that. That was the line we drew because NO ONE wants a bunch of Swedes going without snus. We'd wreak absolute havoc on this world.
Almost all post WWII bridges where built and prepared to be blown up, some even pre-wired to attach explosives in designated weak points.
Anyway the aim of all of this was most likely to make Sweden a bitter pill to swallow for any potential invader, so much so that in a major conflict they would need to allocate such a disproportional amount on men, resources and time on Sweden that they would not attack unless Sweden was the main or only target
If I run out of snus I'll invade Russia all by myself. You don't want to see me when I run out of snus, I am not a pleasant man when I run out of snus.
Why is there strange jumpcuts where you skip sometimes important parts? Happens pretty much every episode. 🤔
A very intelligent nation.
One that also apparently lost its mind in in the years after the fall of the Soviet Union beginning with the sharp decline in defense budget in 1988 to 2009 when the invasion defense was unceremoniously scrapped in favor of international peacekeeping (conscription ended in 2011) and a very small professional army, only to start a slow build up of capability again after Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.
I think that there even was a low point when the Swedish armed forces had more Generals than artillery pieces...
The general swede is a pretty stupid person. Just look at the last 50 years who have runned the country majority of the years. Same politicians that now say they have been pro NATO always and pro nuclear power etc. Its laughable, but the general public will still vote for them.
Sweden had a Nuclear Arms programme at a point.
Basically, the only thing that could deterr a nuclear power was... nuclear power.
By 1965, Sweden already had a device, and was about 6 months from testing it. (Still needed more weapons grade material as the then possessed refining process was rather slow). In 1966, they decided not to further pursue the development, and in 1968, they signed the non-proliferation agreement... even after the project was officially concluded in 1972, they still held on to weapons grade material for decades, and still had the facilities to produce more, still have the deposits of uranium ore in our environment, still had the scientists involved in the development (just moved them over to civilian nuclear power instead) and all the plans and equipment to build them...
The Swedish decision to cancel the nuclear programme have been largely attributed to civilian dislike of the bomb, seeing the US's inability to use nukes in Korea or Vietnam (basically, if the US is willing to bomb NK back to the stone age, or burnt half of North Vietnam to the ground, but wont use nukes to do it... what gives?), and certain under-the-table guarantees from the US.
But I think... if we had been invaded, and isolated, and NATO didnt try to interfere... we'd reactive the Nuclear Arms programme. If we had lost our airforce, thus having loat our ability to strike the Soviets on their home turf, we'd use them tactically on our home turf...
I was a loader on Haubits 77b..in 1987....😮😊
If you have a underground snus factory, you are prepared...😮😅😅😅
This is where Sweden was Unique compared to other bunker nations that has or still is using their versions of this system.
Finland and Switxerland is two othernation which have gone the same way as Sweden did atleast to some extent.
So basically what we had as reserve was an Complete backup of everything more or less that Sweden would need to function.
For about 3 moths at minimum to about 2 years.
The Fueal was one of the areas were we had the biggest reserves due to it beeing more or less the most important parts of Mechanized warfare.
Imagine if Ukraine had the indepth invasion planning and preparedness Sweden had with ukraines population...heck Russia would be doomed.
Everything you skip is declassified :) They would never show anything that is still under active secrecy.
Now congratulate ussr in the scenario. You arw about to meet the boss fight.
?..?
What?
@@AndyWoohoo666what would be called the home guard in other countries. But made in a very swedish way. Its basicallt gerilla warfair on steriods
@@matsv201
Well the Home Guard is the Home Guard, in other countries it's called "territorial defense" National Guard" or "Rosgvardia" just as an example.
They are an important part of the Swedish defense due to the downsizing of the Swedish Armed Forces since the 80's. But calling it "Guerilla warfare om steroids is nothing but hubris" ( yes I spelled Guerilla, warfare and steroids the correct way ).
Still it doesn't explain what ever your first comment was because it was a totally incoherence.
As a little background for you, I joined the military after my conscription in 1981 and beside a 5 year service outside the Swedish military I've served all my life and are still active as an officer in the Swedish Army. Just as a little context to my comment.
Further on when I was a younger officer I was briefly assigned as a Brigade instructor for one of the Home Guard brigades so I actually got some experience there as well.
