DIY Mobile Bandsaw Mill Part 1 Trailer

- For the last week i have been working on this mobile trailer mounted bandsaw mill. its made from box steel and other scraps i have around the smallholding. It will be fitted with a 10hp diesel engine running on vegetable oil. In the next video i will start work on the saw head.

sick! all these cool projects going on with so much cool stuff yet to come (sauna, timber framed house, upstairs metal workshop with carlift, secondary stream diversion for higher flow hydro nozzles etc.)

Morning Kris, You could just run a second fuel tank, One for diesel start and finish, prime for start. Then when it's warmed up switch over to Veg.

That's the ideal scenario, but it needs modification to the engine (albeit a minor one).

Kris, Matt Cremona on his CZcams channel built a trailer and built a homemade trailer "rotisserie" to turn the trailer. Worked out great and he kept it mounted through build, paint, wiring. Might take a look and consider it.
Really looking forward to seeing how you tackle the saw head part of it. Blows me away to see you thinking and making. Proper engineering.

Evolution have made quality saws for cutting steel for years.
Use wooden post it's easier on blade.
Put turn bolt at end of pipe for clearance
Love what you do. You have a lot of talent. I had a thought about the fuel for the engine. You may have come up with the same idea in the next episodes. How about 2 tanks? 1 with only pure diesel and one with bio. Then you can put a tap in to switch between them. Start it on pure, switch to bio then back to pure at the end of the day to flush the boi out before storing :)
You’ve proven many times that you can do whatever you set your mind to. When people talk about “kids nowadays”, I put a stop to it because there are many who have wonderful work ethics. Even though these projects look overwhelming, your editing makes all of them look doable. ;)
Kris please use a bottle of each avocado, sunflower, and grade seed oils, and see which one is better. These three are the only ones anyone should cook with at high temperatures, because all others are compromised at those temperatures. I think any of either of these three will perform much better for you in any of you vegetable oil ran engines, and I’d like to know whether that is the case or not.
I'll hopefully copy your mill this summer,,, save some $$$...on an island off the coast of Maine!

I love the idea of repurposing! Rather than see much good materials being hauled off to the depot or to the dump, utilizing it in the construction of something ideal is always something I like to take into consideration. Good job of fabricating your own sawmill. Would eventually like to make one of my own. Here's hoping there are no obstacles with the weather or with sourcing parts. Cheers!

Its always really hard to get things square and level but you did a really good job!
Definitely be following this along! Just bought a woodmizer lt15wide will do a 36" log and love it..one of the best features is it has small rollers at the top of the log stops that are the best idea on the whole mill you should look at there design and copy it I'm sure it will be nice of you do big logs and have to roll them

You rock Kris many can learn from you survive is the answer dont trust governments to look after you South Africa is going down the drain started to go like in Zimbabwe power cuts the whole day nothing is secure here we have to build own power and plant our own veggies. Love the video, I'm always excited to see a new post from you, Kris. This ones extra special though, I've been researching band saw mills obsessively and plan to get one in the spring. A welder is something I want for the future, but I think I'll use the mill to build a shop for it first! Thanks for the inspiration.

I don't think there's anything you couldn't build. Totally amazing :)
Rather than running straight veg oil, you could convert it to bio-diesel. Then you can treat it as normal diesel, without needing to mix road derv in. Also you can process used cooking oil, which is cheaper/free..
Also it is then road-legal, up to 2000ltrs per year. You can make a bio-diesel rig with oil barrels and a bit of copper plumbing.
Also, don't forget the drain holes in the chassis.
Probably too late, as you already have the engine.... But an electric motor + diesel generator set could have been a more flexible option. You can site the engine away from the work site and give your ears/nose a break. It lightens the bandsaw assembly. You have the option of running from mains if it were available in future. And you have a generator to share with for other projects, rather than having to get yet another engine for them.

What would've help to prevent warpage is to have a welding table or lots of work horses that have been leveled. Than use plenty of clamps and brace the workpiece before welding that is what prevents warpage. And even than afterwards they would sent it to a plant to straighten the workpiece with massive heat and weight in a press. Also in the trade they would use hard wire instead of Flux core wire which is much less heat therefore not as much warpage. Just sharing my knowledge but with a bandsaw the tolerances should be acceptable as long as your angle iron is straight you should be fine!
BTW Kris, I would install an extra cross brace at the very end where your hitch is attached. And I would recommend you place a brace beneath the tongue of the hitch and extend it back perpendicular to those existing braces and as I said add one more brace and extend that brace back crossing those two cross braces to reinforce the tongue hitch. I hope you can get that. Since your just using it on your farm as you said, it might be ok as it is. If not you can always reinforce it later on. Other than that you've done a decent job bro.. cheers bud.

Possibly fit a second fuel tank and changeover tap. Then one tank for diesel and one for veg oil. I remember the old tractors that started on petrol then were switched over to paraffin.😀🇬🇧

Hi Kris. This diesel engine very good. It is powerful and economical. I have this engine on mototiller, 9hp. It is not warm. Im not use electric starter, i using hand starter. You handy dude. Your video very good, thanks from Russia.
