Timber Framed Barn Part 25 Rafters and stud walls
For the last few weeks I have been getting the roof rafters up and getting some studs walls done. Due to a family emergency I am going to be away a little bit on and off for a while so I have recruited Sam to help speed the project along a bit while I am here. Thanks to Sam for his hard work.

I Had To Rebuild The Waterwheel, The Driveshaft Snapped!
zhlédnutí 194KPřed měsícem
About three months ago I got a call from the customer saying the wheel keeps shutting itself down. while trying to diagnose the problem over the phone the problem became very clear as the whole drive shaft broke in two. I packed up the tools and went to take it apart to bring it home for a hub rebuild.

For the last two weeks I have been working on finishing the stone walls and the retaining wall for the drain at the back of the building. It was slow going due to the poor weather. But it looks like we have now had the worst of it so im keep to get going on the roof again. Unfortunately due to me stacking up over a ton of roofing in the way of one of the walls I was unable to do one wall. but I...

In this video I finish the purlins on the lean to. part of it was using timber the same as the other ones on the building but there was one art that has a very large span. I could not get or mill timbers long enough so I decided to use some steel RSJ's and make them tie in to the timber. Hope you enjoy the video.

So After a winter of mostly working on hydroelectric related projects I finally found time to get back to work on the barn. The barn will be ocupying most of my time now until autumn. I managed to get the purlins done for the sloped roof side of the building but also managed to get a face full of hydraulic oil and smash my thumb. Hope you enjoy.

In this video I got to install an overspeed controller and fix a broken weld on the wheel. the controller is very simple. it reads the speed of the wheel via a proximity sensor and triggers a really if it goes passes a set value. that then drives an actuator that pulls out a pin and shuts the water off.

    I've done the same experiment with my students. I showm them yours one. Y They've become your fan. They did try the same after getting impressed with you and your dedication . . Nice job. . Some suggestions ( that we did implement ) 1. Increase the diameter of that turbine wheel . This way it'll have more power to rotate the generator with the same amount of water. . 2. Add cooling system with the generator to add some to its efficiency as efficiency comes down with increasing temperature. You won't need anything extra . Just use that flowing water to keep it cool. But make sure to make it waterproof . 3. Change the shapes of waer bowls of the wheel to increase its efficiency. You must study about Hydel power generation turbines and their shapes.

    Just checking - that 16a ceeform plug and socket on the wall - looks strangely like the socket is on the wall, and the plug is plugged into it. I know that can't be the case, as that would be against the electricity regs, and illegal, as the plug would have live accessible pins on it . I know you can get the right way round (wall mounted inlet plug) for caravans etc, It just looks like the bit on the wall is a socket for some reason.

    • @emsservices6090
      @emsservices6090 Před 4 dny

      Oh hang on, I've just seen more of the video. Yep that plug and socket arrangement IS illegal. Socket should be on the generating plant, and plug / inlet should be on the wall. And if the unit isn't generating 230v, then it should be the correct colour for the voltage (110v is yellow, <50v purple etc).

  • @MichaelSaull
    @MichaelSaull Před 4 dny

    I think even if the stub shafts were set into depth of your main flanges (6-8" into the barrel) or so it would have really reduced the cantilever/torqueing effect of the weight of the wheel on the weld.

    a) lime putty + ashes + olive oil = soap. try it. b) most limestone is actually dolomite. the longer limestone has to age, the higher likelyhood that it has become dolomite. the temps required to thoroughly calcify dolomite are much higher than limestone because of the suspended iron and magnesium in the matrix. if you have access to HCl acid, put a small drip on the stone. if it reacts violently, you have limestone. if nothing happens, you have dolomite. if you can get your kiln to an even 900C, you should be good to go. If you get higher than 1300C, it will ruin the stone and the lime won't react with water as well. 900C is the sweet spot. id second someone elses recommendation that you should get a bellows on there and burn the stone for longer. since you have unlimited free energy on your homestead, there's no reason you couldnt build a machine to automate the bellows for you. c) id say give this project another go

    That winding you showed of the 3 phase alternator with the endshield removed, no phase insulation between phases and sustandard varnish on the winding which is suppised to hold the winding together/firm so the individual wires cannot rub,vibrate against each other. Also have a look at the winding connection to the output leads to see if there is any parallel connection of the individual winding wires...Keep up the great work, so so interesting.

    the big problem with a lot of companies and their products ratings is that they use "peak" ratings which is more often than not what they can handle for a couple of mins or so before going bang. they do this specifically to make their products look better or more powerful than competitors. i have seen in recent years especially with things like generators here in australia that companies are listing a running/continuous rating and a peak or surge rating where less scrupulous companies are only listing the peak rating. personally if i see something thats only listing a peak or max rating then i take a quarter off that as a safety buffer which hopefully prolongs the lifetime a bit. you can get some good stuff produced in china but ive found more often than not that if its a chinese company and not a name brand thats just made in china then it will be a cheap and inferior version and ratings arent to be trusted at all. even the chinese themselves know this and avoid a lot of their own products and instead go for western branded stuff
