There were 1.6 million in attendance. The helicopter flew over to put a fine mist of water to cool the audience down, it was a hot day. The troops you saw were supposed to be providing security at the first outdoor festival in Russia after the collapse of the wall, with such a big audience. The first western bands to play, and they thought they needed the militia. Some of those troops when identified by the videos were punished for their behaviour, but the experience made up for it.
That number is a gross exaggeration as there have been many credible accounts of people and officials who attended that festival who estimated the crowds at any one time in attendance being closer to 800k...with at least double that number in total over the course of the festival, which is probably why people confuse the total # over the course of the event with the largest # at any one time.
@@BuccWylde Wrong. Look at photo's of 1969 "Woodstock." "Estimated" 500,000...... I have no problems believing the 1.6 million #. Woodstock ain't got crap on Metallica in Moscow in 1991
@@Mike_Baldwin believe what you want, but it's pretty well documented.
I was there as a representative of Amnesty International at the time and I personally took a head count of everyone over the course of the performance and there was really only 17 people there including the band. The Reagan Administration paid CIA operatives in Moscow to strategically place mirrors around Red Square to make it look like there were thousands there. I can finally talk about this top secret operation as it has been declassified after 30 years. My story is true because it is now on the internet so you have to believe it.
@@BuccWylde Yeah, I just checked, it's documented. "List of highest-attended concerts". It says 1.6 mil.
This is one of the most glorious moments in music history
maybe human history. guarantee nothing this hard core will ever happen again
Both of you💯true
For context, this was a free concert in an airfield near Moscow in the fall of1991... AC/DC was the headliner, while Metallica and Pantera opened. This was in the aftermath of the attempted coup in 1991... Russia's then-president Yeltsin organized the show to thank the youth.
Metallica had just released their self-titled 5th album (often called the 'black' album) and the single 'Enter Sandman' was blowing up on MTV and radio all over the world... the album already went #1 in the US, and their fanbase multiplied overnight that year as they went on tour. That record had 5 singles total, went to sell over 16 million copies in the US to date... Metallica spent 1991 to 1994 touring that record.
Thanks for that.
In stead of a free concert their current president is sending the current youth to their death. I guess that's his way of thanking them.
@@thegrumpypapa5549 Their current prez was a member of the Kremlin during the USSR days.
@@sumonjamal1653 Vladimir Putin was a foreign intelligence officer in the KGB from 1975 to 1991.
@@toddausmus7639 What the hell do u think the KGB was working for?
Gay Russians for President???
KGB worked for the Kremlin!
This has to be one of the most impressive bit of concert video ever. The audience is unbelievable…..but the performance matches it!
I've seen quite a few reactions to Metallica songs, but I don't think any of them had such genuine and infectious happiness as yours. Thanks for lifting my mood!
I stumbled across this channel and I love how this girl enjoys rock n roll. Gives me hope that rock will once again rise from its ashes 🤘🏻
This was just after the fall of the USSR and this concert was at one of the largest active Air Force bases, thus the military aircraft seen flying in and out, 4th largest concert in history 1.4M - 1.6M+, crazy! did you see all the towers circling the main stage? they all had speakers wired to the main stage to surround the crowd in music
Another world-record! The Only Band playing on All 5 Continents!
Metallica are very diverse as a metal band, and they have such a polarized fanbase... many loved the early records, while others prefer later albums... Their popularity globally was built by touring relentlessly and connecting w/ their fanbase.
The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, when James Hetfield met the Danish Lars Ulrich in their late teens... Lars wanted to play drums, James played guitar. After recording a demo in '81 which James did vocals on, they hired bassist Ron McGovney and lead guitarist Dave Mustaine to play local gigs in 1982 w/ James Hetfield on guitar & vocals, Lars Ulrich on drums, and finished a demo tape of original songs that played heavy metal faster and more intensely than bands of the day... That new sound was dubbed 'Thrash metal'.
In 1983, the band moved to San Franciso and Cliff Burton (bass) joined and taught the band all he knew about songwriting and helped progress them musically. They were offered to record in New York that year, but once they got there... Dave Mustaine was fired and replaced by Kirk Hammett on lead guitar... They recorded their debut album "Kill 'em all" w/ Hammett playing Mustaine's parts. It was released in late '83 as Metallica began touring actively.
Dave Mustaine returned to L.A. and formed his own band Megadeth, which found success by 1985.
Metallica kept busy writing and recording... releasing 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning' in late 1984, and then 3rd album 'Master of Puppets' in early 1986... the band toured the US and Europe at a frantic pace, but then tragedy struck. In the fall of 1986, Metallica's tour bus crashed in Sweden and killed bassist Cliff Burton... The tour was completed w/ new bassist Jason Newsted joining Metallica.
Creative conflicts making the 4th album 'And justice for all' (1988) affected the overall sound of the record, but it became a platinum hit faster than 'Master of Puppets'... The band filmed their first music video 'One' in 1989 and launched their first headlining tour that year. Making the 5th self-titled 'black' album took a year, but became their biggest career record, selling 16x platinum in the US alone, their first #1 album.
Touring into 1994, Metallica took a break before releasing new music in 1996... 2 albums worth of music was recorded. The first album 'Load' (1996) was a shock, because Metallica had cut their hair and toned down their sound to a 90's rock style... but the record still sold well, followed by the next album 'Reload' (1997)... and then an all-covers 2CD release 'Garage Inc' (1998)... Metallica played live w/ a full orchestra in 1999 and released that show as the 2 CD live 'S&M' album... and then the soundtrack single 'I disappear' in 2000.
In early 2001, longtime bassist Jason Newsted left Metallica.
Sessions for a new album proved disastrous as Metallica tried to return to their thrash metal sound for the 2003 album 'St. Anger'... but Newsted exit, James stint in rehab, and the band's chaos led to a very disorganized album, which became their poorest seller to date, despite charting at #1... Robert Trujillo (bass) joined in '03 for the tour and became a member. 'Death Magnetic' (2008) was a better record and charted at #1 and did somewhat better. Metallica spent more time on the road than in the studio for the next 2 decades... 'Hardwired to self-destruct' (2016) was a 2 CD studio album and did very well in the digital age. A new Metallica album is still "work in progress"...
Don't forget, the album Master of Puppets is the only heavy metal album that has been added to the Library of Congress as being culturally significant enough to be preserved for all time.
Also, Metallica is the only band in history to have played a concert on all 7 continents of the world, and to have done all 7 within 1 year.
The music before the band comes on the stage is "The Ecstasy of Gold", one of the western compositions that most represent the genius of Ennio Morricone. Composed for the movie: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", directed by Sergio Leone, the Western theme simply became one of the most iconic music masterpiece in Cinema's history.
I could almost see the Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach standoff.
Excellent reaction, you could actually see and hear the joy in your heart watching this video. pretty rare here on CZcams.
The early-mid 90's had some of the best rock ever.
The intro is nice as it brings in each performer separately: first, the drums; then the rhythm guitar; then the bass; and finally, the lead guitar.
Yes!!!! I just saw ur Rush live in Rio, & it reminded me of this with the crowd & i was hoping u did this one: D ...woot, woot!
love this version , thanx verdy .
You _HAVE_ to see the 2014 cover of this song by 3 young girls from Mexico (who are now known as The Warning) They were 9, 12 and 14 at the time they made the video. You _NEED_ to check it out, even if you don't do a reaction video of it, but I recommend you do. Btw, that crowd _WAS_ insane, wasn't it? That song is one of my all time favorites. It rocks _SO_ hard.
Also Liliac another young band covered this song imoressively
I approve this message!
@@eloy6017 Yes, The Warning are incredibly talented young ladies!!
The Warning!! ⚡🎸🔥
I think the full-blown professional video that they (The Warning) did about a year ago is more impressive than the earlier cover. This is the video for the version they did for the album called _"The Metallica Blacklist"._ The more recent version has over 2 million views here on CZcams.
This was such an important time in history for the attendees and rock music 🤘🤘 I highly recommend reacting to Metallica's albums in order from 1st to last. Their time together has been an amazing journey with ups and downs in each album of theirs, starting with Kill 'Em All!!!
LOVE your reaction to this. I believe you'd like the official video to this as well...pretty stinking hard-hitting, kind of like this was. Keep on reacting...please. ❤💯
Your reaction is so beautiful, that's what music is all about

Great reaction
I was born in 1978 in Miami, Florida USA
I have tons of old cassette tapes in storage from the old music
Hope your channel grows to help people who are lost in these days
Konnichiwa Y'all! You rewound to rewatch the solo. So I had to rewind to watch you do that again because holy shit...You are the first reactor I have ever seen do that. You my friend just earned a sub from this Orc and Metallica fan! Keep up the good work and great reactions
5 minutes in: “I’ve heard that part…”
Complete respect to your mother, you probably heard that part in the womb before you were born.
It was a pleasure to watch such a beautiful young lady really enjoy watching some good metal. I could tell she was having fun.
I absolutely LOVED watching your face during this. You went from grinning ear to ear then straight to "stank face" (the face you make when you smell something bad😁) and then BACK to grinning like a crazy person. I LOVED it!
Welcome to the fandom. Metallica is a deep rabbit hole that you will love. Waiting for more!!!!
The "stank face" was just really getting into it. I know this, because I find myself doing is at really good metal performances from bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica.
haha great reaction to an awesome gig, i knew you would have heard it before :)
Another great Live performance would be Santana - Soul Sacrifice , Live at Woodstock Rock Festival 1969 . Carlos Santana and his band killed this performance .
Love the passion! 🔥💯
If that doesn't get you hype nothin will this band rules the world one of my favs your cool to hang with more metallica
Always have a quiet chuckle to myself when I watch people reacting to something like Nightwish at Wacken and marvelling at a crowd of 82,000 - well this is what a crowd TWENTY times that size looks like !
for the people who don't believe that there were 1.6 million there, I have some metallica fan friends on the discord one of them was there but not right there but far away, he tells us that only around a radius of one kilometer there were people gathered in groups far away from there cars people selling things etc.tells us that there were as many people as a separate city, possibly in excess of 2 million or more.
Music unites us all, epic performance.
It's been featured in many things. Most probably guitar hero?, other games, movies possibly. Their most recognized song. Another is "Nothing Else Matters", and the epic "One".
Welcome to the Metallifam! Been subbed since your early reactions to Dreamcatcher (my 2nd fave musical artist), glad to see you branch out to arguably the best metal band ever (and my fave musical artist)! Please keep going with them - like Dreamcatcher, they have quite a bit of diversity in their discography, something for everyone.
Love from AZ North America! Music bring s everyone together, keep on keep'n on.
Les expressions de ton visage ne mentent pas. Merci de partager ta joie et ton bonheur à l'écoute de cette musique. Tu es mûre pour une réaction de l'album Metallica de 1991! ( Black Album ) 🖤🖤
4:39...the surprised face is... lovely...🤣😂👍
MetallicA,Y sont tout simplement iconiques!continue comme ça,Ma belle.t’es réactions font plaisir à voir.Salut depuis la France.🌸😊✌🏻
WOW WOW METALLICA AMAZING
This is what metal does to you , I was one of the original metal fans back in the early 70s listening to Sabbath and a number of the heavy rock groups Purple, Atomic Rooster etc , we loved the music but never knew it would appeal to a generation 50 yrs later . Raw powerful music
the beginning song is called "Ecstasy of gold" by Ennio Morricone.
On that day the Eagles of Freedom soared higher than these people ever seen in generations if ever! MERICA
Awesome reaction!!! Metallica is the greatest band to EVER do it. I can't wait to see you react to more Metallica
Everywhere... you have heard this son everywhere!
Thanks Verde , nice
Why do I like watching diff generation rock out lol 😂 Genuinely rocking out too
This reaction brought the beautiful out of you from the start.
love your facial expression when a guitar groove hits
I saw this tour back in the day. The Black Album tour. No opening band. It was all Metallica all night. They were in their prime.
They are an amazing live act.
Great reaction. Also, excellent Nordiques sweater. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Well cool reaction 👍
That was a great great reaction!
My grandma made me recite that prayer every night. He favorite western was the good, the bad and the ugly. And that’s the connection I have between a heavy metal band and a tiny, half black, half Native American woman😂
Miss you, Queen 🎸🔥💜
Nice reaction.. it ends all of a sudden like that because they go into the nxt song creeping death, which you should check out too, along with harvester of sorrow from this same show
I worked the Hair Tour" of 84' the end was 4 days in Moscow to play the "Moscow Music Peace Festivale 1989.. Metalica BonJovi. Ozzy Cinderlla Scorpions Skid Row etc,,, it's in the Mosco Olimpic Stadium. This opened the door to Metallica in 91.
Over one and a half million people saw that show. They couldn't understand a word of what was being said, but the Iron Curtain had just come down and they were thrilled that Metallica and THEY were there.
There was over 1 million people there- truly epic!
Monsters of Rock 1991: El concierto más épico de la historia
Seattle 89 :P
The golden era of music
I have NEVER been to a bad Metallica concert - and I have been to many of them over the years. They put on one hell of a show! Although, this Monsters of Rock show was on another level. There is just something about the bands of this era that hit differently. Masters of their instruments and the stage!
i love this girl
The crowd is so big that you can physically see the speed of sound. When the crowd is jumping up and down and it looks like a wave, it's because it takes the sound longer to get to the people in the back. Not joking. I've seen it in action.
I saw Metallica twice in the 90s. It's quite an experience. Especially in the mosh pits!! 🤘😜
Metallica - Battery live in Seattle 1989. Best concert ever recorded
I was there, and I was 20... Magic time.
3:00. If I am not mistaken, there were 1 million people at that concert. Incredible.....
1.6 million people ..... right after the fall of the soviet union
Definitely before Putin's reign of terror.
What a fresh and Natural reaction to this performance by Metallica. Truly love you take on the crowd, band and personal opinion. I find it had to compare Metallica to any other band as they are in the own Category of music and greatness. Metallica = Metallica.
I highly recommend you to watch Creeping Death from the same concert in 1991? one of the most powerful songs!!!
Yeah! 🤘🖤🤘
This was broadcast live on pay per view. I watched it at a friend's house back in high school when it originally aired--because his mom bought it for us.
Ah, rock and roll, the universal language!
The song in stranger things was master of puppets. from the CD master of puppets.
Legend has it that some of the people that were at this concert are just now getting back to their cars...
Metallica collaborated with the San Francisco Symphony for the S&M live album with the orchestra backing Metallica,. The driving bass drum for this song, which is already firing up the crowd anyway, was taken to another level with the timpani (kettledrums) joining in.
You cannot have lived on this earth for more than 20 years and not have heard that song on a classic rock radio or a super bowl a tv show or some where.
Just a few million fans :)
My friends, Pantera, were speechless when they played. If I’m not mistaken, this was the first rock show in Russia.
I have seen estimates of up to 1.2 million people at that concert!
For a cool crowd reaction watch the crowd at a Green Day concert singing Bohemian Rhapsody . goosebumps await
The magic of this song is a poetic, imaginative child's night time fantasy set in a raucus metal experience. The music is good, but would never endure like it has with some generic, forgetable, "hey baby" lyrics that define heavy metal. Really the lyrics shine over the music; would that Verdy could see the lyrics at the same time. I'm impressed how well the instruments were mixed for a live event.
"According to various sources (the exact figure cannot be given, because the entrance was free), on Saturday, from 300 to 400 thousand people visited the airfield in Tushino. They did not reach the Guinness Book of Records (while the record for attendance of the free Jean-Michel Jarre show in 1989 in Paris, which was attended by 1 million 300 thousand spectators, is held), but maybe this is for the best." Moskovsky Komsomolets" 01.10.1991
And 30+ years later Metallica is still out there killing it!
Your reaction is incredibly)))
Since I haven't seen anyone say so, the song from Stranger Things is "Master of Puppets", the title track of Metallica's 3rd album (FYI, Enter Sandman is from their self-titled 5th album aka the black album). Master of Puppets, though, has a ton of great music on it. For my money, there isn't a bad track on there.
First Metallica? You have so much joy ahead of you. WOW!! I think their second album "Ride The Lightning" might be their best but they have many strong complete albums. You can find a few documentaries about this concert and I suggest to at least take a peak. This was nearly 2 million peoples first taste of capitalism, including the soldiers. Peace/JT
Greatest metal show of all time!!
I saw Metallica in '88 during the Monsters of Rock tour with Van Halen, Scorpions and Dokken. Metallica was trying out songs live from And Justice For All. They were great live.
The biggest concert ever held was Rod Stewart at Copacabana beach. In front of 3.5 million people
The Band is a local band here. They are from down the 101 Freeway a little bit.
It was reported that there were 1.4 to 1.6 million people there at the concert and yes the army was there to provide security for before, during and after the concert. They reported that 36 people died there at the concert.
I wish I could experience Metallica for the first Time again!
When people taste freedom for the first time in years.
"Where have I heard this?" .....maybe the radio, this was a massive mainstream hit
🤘
Потрясающая девушка!!)))
We were young, the wall had fallen, there was hope, now I'm old and on top of that everything goes to shit.
I could see one of the military feeling scared to death at the energy in the crowd....
This was not the biggest event ever but nearly. The biggest music event was the Love Parade 1999 in Berlin. Totally different music but there were 1.75 million people there.
Its crazy 🔥🤘🖤 best Metallica 👍👍👍👍👍
