This is like being blown away by going to the beach, taking a single grain of sand and then calculating the odds that you would have picked that one grain out of the vast number of grains of sand on the beach.

It's not likely they are actively on this comment chain because this isn't a chat room and the comments don't push to people's phones/computer and don't automatically refresh.
@@richardgay7990 Well, it's cumbersome. I'd recommend reddit or other dedicated places for people to converse. CZcams comment section isn't a very effective medium because the comment section has to be refreshed to see new comments on most devices.

The actual quote was, "Cocaine is a hell of a drug!"; on an episode of Chappelle's groundbreaking show on Comedy Central. In the episode, I think it was a clip of James waxing introspectively when he said that, which was referenced by Murphy and then repeated (I think) by Chappelle in full Rick James costume and makeup.
To be honest, it's been so long since I first saw it, and I've re-remembered it so many times in my mind, I can't separate the impersonation from the original quote by James.
But it really seemed to fit the caller's "Manchurian Candidate" level of religious brainwashing.

I know right. I mean, apart from the strong religious delusion he sounds like a fairly reasonable guy. To keep his fantasy alive he has to reject all those things plus nature and natural origins, the definition of evidence, observed facts and science. How a person can be fairly reasonable and still maintain those beliefs is baffling.
He did sound like a newcomer to atheism so maybe he's come to his senses but I doubt it.

Austin Wow, even the dumbest person can point to man as the designer and creator of cards, with no deity required. Infinite regression in creators is going to give you a huge problem when it comes to the universe.
Austin's post-hoc rationalization can be more easily explained like this:
He started with the conclusion -- Eric or Dave as they are now -- as if it was a goal. It wasn't.
Exactly! The probability that their parents would have children is very high, probably close to 1. If they had come from a different sperm or egg, would the caller say, "I guess I was wrong"?

Exactly, the odds of a specific human birth has nothing to do with the odds of any human birth which is what his point was, and neither has anything to do with the existence of a God.
@@John_Demarco I asked my mum a question about that in my early teens. I even worked out that if I hadn't been born as me, a different combination of genes, etc., would simply result in a different person, who would STILL be ME.
The fact that I am sitting thinking about it means that the PROBABILITY of me is 100% REGARDLESS of the POSSIBILITY.

This call started so well, with the caller taking the time to calmly define terms and preventing strawmanning. Hats off to Austin for doing that...
And then it just devolved in 'probability therefore God,' and evidence-less assertions. If Jesus really did rise from the dead we need to take him more seriously than anyone else to have ever lived. Sure. First demonstrate that Jesus really did rise from the dead; until you've proven that, there is no point to moving on to any other part of the argument.
Austin forgot that Yeshua's father, Yahweh, is all powerful, all compassionate and all just.
If that were true he would not have morphed into his own son so he could be crucified to save mankind.

Mate - roll a dice 1000 times in sequence. On each roll, note the outcome. Your logical argument now dictates, that no matter what sequence of 1000 rolls you end up with, you will have proven God, as it will be impossibly unlikely to end up with exactly that sequence of rolls. This is as far away from proving anything as it gets.
What a about putting your cellphone in your pocket and just by "random chance" sending complete text messages. The point I'm making is all logic and reason does point to intelligent design. You don't get a reality that we have by random chance or an accident. If there were no intelligent design, chaos and disorder would prevail.
Sending complete text messages as you set down each time. Surely that could not happen by coincidence repeatedly over and over. The more science advances the more it will prove there is an uncaused cause, prime mover, God if you will!
You cellphone analogy is entirely different from the analogy used in the video. There is one simple thing you must realise in order to disprove the argument.
The original argument was along the lines of this:
“In the set of all possible human beings which could exist today, the fact that exactly this particular subset exists, the people who are alive right now, is extremely unlikely.”
Now that is true. Just like the point-wise probability of any continuous distribution is zero. However, it doesn’t make it a miracle when you pull a random number from the distribution, even though it could have also potentially been any other number.
All you must realise is, that no matter which subset of humans had been drawn from the set of all possible human beings, you would have been looking back over the generations and said: “it is so extremely unlikely that the exact subset would be alive today...” and that is what makes your argument entirely invalid.
In your cellphone analogy you have restricted your probability space, by only allowing for “complete texts”, which is equivalent to making a prediction. It is also equivalent to saying you which to pull a number from a uniform distribution along the entire real axis, between 0 and 10. Suddenly, there is a prediction, which changes every thing.
Whatever the religion it always adds up to 'I believe because I believe'.

The odds of this specific state of people? Sure, nearly 0 odds.
When I shuffle a deck of cards. A specific order of the deck is quite rare. But I'm still going to have an order regardless, so 100% chance of some deck order to the cards.
Similarly, this specific order of people, near 0 odds, but some order of people at or near 100% chance.
Looking at the outcome and stating how amazing it turned out this way is true, but it had to turn out some way, thus not amazing something turned out.

Exactly. The PROBABILITY of your hand is 100%, because it exists. The POSSIBILITY is still one in whatever a pack of cards is.
No evidence of a god, but yet it's more plausible that an unproven god created everything.... but its still special pleading... regardless, everything needs a creator except the creator... so what are the chances of a creator creating itself out of what exactly?
What I would like to know is if this creator god is so awesome, is he capable of creating (reproducing?) other entities capable of creating universes? How do me know that the god that created our universe was the top (bottom?) level god? Maybe it is just turtles all the way down.

I knew plenty of people called jeuss and none of them walk on water. If one of them wrote a book saying they walked on water and we found it decades later, I'd look for evidence he walked on water such as other contemporary accountings of it then derive an understanding from there.
We have none of that for the supernatural claims of the bible. The only places you can find where Jews and christians ever had superpowers is in the bible.

As if they know. We don't know what was before space and time so how do they know
I believe they "know" God is outside of space and time because otherwise it's harder to claim God created the universe. It's not an argument from knowledge, it's an assertion that's needed to support the creation story. If God is not outside of space and time, how could God create space and time?
I wonder how many unsupported assertions are needed to support a typical creation story.

@@heathentheheretic4909 Yep, there is some serious, fairly accepted theoretical physics stuff out there that is mind blowing and counter intuitive.
For that reason I bear in mind that Christians saying they don't believe the Universe could come from nothing are simply trusting their intuition or common sense, over scientists that they are biased to distrust.
I'm just getting started reading the Lawrence Krauss book, A Universe from nothing. Hopefully it will help me reform my "common sense" to include more complex knowledge :)
BTW, Before time is kinda contradictory, so no shame in not believing in it ;P
I believe the Einstein model actually has multiple extra dimensions within our Universe, but that's not something everyone likes about it and there are efforts to resolve that.
I have heard that there are serious theories that involve other Universes outside of our space and time continuum, so I don't dismiss the possibility out of hand.
I do have to wonder why some Christians say God is or was outside of time since the bible says nothing about a beginning to time or a creation of time. (As far as I know.) Perhaps in the justification of their creation story they get some mashup of bible and science. The outside of time and space statement seems to be drawn directly from the big bang theory, so they are at least acknowledging a part of the theory.
I think the apologist tradition basically starts from their interpretation of the bible as absolute truth and looks for science that doesn't disagree, and then throws out any parts the bible disagrees with.
You know, basically the opposite of modern scientific method?
But yeah, much of this science is rather young, and changing and improving at an amazing rate, so perhaps within our lives there will be some realistic theories about things outside of time and space.
Leave the mind altering drugs alone and stop reading the Bible.
And clean up you room. It's a mess.

They don't understand each other. The man on the phone says that it's a miracle that HE was born with such chances of billions of cells and billions of years. He thinks that for HIM to be born there was supposed to be a plan because the chances are that small. But that is kinds the same as the puddle argument. If it wasn't him, it would be someone else in his place thinking HE was supposed to be born. The thing is you can rationalize it because you were born. It doesn't mean there was plan for you to be born.

About odds, i am Taxidriver, at the end of the shift i have a amount of money made, how it is in the end us a matter of chances!
It depends on, who will need a taxi, what is not known before, some will take a taxi anyway, the time they will is not premade!
Then it depens on wheni start, where i start and what collegues did up to that point.
And even then its not written down how the shift will end.
I can guess how much i will make but thats based on how much i made in the past, i have no chance to say, i will make x euros, but it could be.
Most times i have luck and sometimes i dont!
I will make money, i just dont know how much, i dont know where i will be at x hours but i hope.
Sometimes i had it, that i say i need x to be fine with it and it happened, but i cant count on it, its chance!

The chance that the *specific* sperm and *specific* egg that made me met may have been unlikely but the chance of *a* sperm and *an* egg meeting is much more likely, almost inevitable since my parents planned to have a child and kept trying until I happened. sometimes i feel dumb because cannot understand the point of most of these callers are trying to make. dude, you're already born therefore the chances of you happening are 100%. any ovum, any day your apples to oranges comparison doesn't make sense. "i happened, therefore; god" makes no sense to me and I'm not even smart. I don't understand logic but Austin doesn't make sense.

Do Not be fearful of challenging your own beliefs, it can lead to great enlightenment. Think for a moment, if you were born in a different region of the world and your guardians taught you Different beliefs than you hold now, would you still hold the same beliefs as you do today? Most likely Not, so wouldn't that mean your beliefs are largely based on your region, geography in which one is born and raised? Sometimes in the "school of life" it is not only important to continue learning, but to Unlearn that which does not agree with you anymore.
Truth is available to those who's curiosity exceeds they're desire to prove themselves right, who's passion for Truth is Bigger than their fears, who have the courage to Question whatever they have been taught... Unanswered questions are far less dangerous than unquestioned answers, in turn meaning that I'd rather have unanswered questions than unquestionable answers...
