  • New bikes:
You pay a lot for the bike up front. - Boo!
MUCH easier to find what you want when it’s new. Dealers have them all over. Might need to drive a couple of hours though.
You know everything that has happened with the bike. Not inheriting someone else problems.
Some bikes do have a 30 day warrantee. If something goes wrong, a good dealer will back it up. If you find a great dealer, they will back it up even with no warrantee from the manufacturer.
Easier to install protective items when new. Bent parts are hard to work with sometimes.
They lose the most amount of money in that first year or so. Just know that going into this.
1-3 year old bikes sell for more money used, Recoup that money and put it toward the next bike.
Say you spent 10 Grand on the bike and rode it for 2 years and sold for $7500. If you had saved $105 each month to your new bike fund, you have the money you need for the next new bike. A new bike every 2 years is really nice.
    Used bike
You pay less for the bike up front - Yah!
BUT you enlisted yourself in a part time job to find it.
    * 20-80 hours searching on craigslist or other classified.. days after day… week after week…. Month after month.
    * 3-12 hours driving around looking at bikes
    * In the end, you buy a bike you are not totally sacrificed with only because of the time commitment you already used. Buyers fatigue sets in!
    * It’s a choice… do you want to pay the money up front, or earn it over a month or 3?
    Awkward negotiations
The buyer will try to get his money out of all the aftermarket parts he put on the bike. They don’t matter much in price, so do pay him for them. (Honda accord example)
At after you ride the used bike for 2-3 years, it hasn’t depreciated as much as the new bike, but it’s no spring chicken either. Sometimes these bikes can sell quickly, but you are dealing with a younger crowd and a lot of tire kickers, that don’t really have the money. They will want to organize a lot of trades.

Thank you so much! I am literally in the car right now on my way to the Husky dealership an hour away to get the 2021 te300i I put a deposit on three months ago! I'm 45 years old that I've never bought a new car or new motorcycle. I can afford it but just grew up kind of blue collar working class and very financially conservative. I've been piecing together old beaters for years And I quit drinking last year and have really doubled down for this sport so I figure it's time to treat myself. I deserve it and I've saved at least that amount of money avoiding booze! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos

The piece about people expecting more money out of a bike because of aftermarket parts is spot on. The aftermarket parts were for the person who bought them to enjoy. They add absolutely no value to the used bike.

If your into hard enduro and buy a bone stock bike you'll have to spend on it, if you get a bike that already has brake disc gaurds , bash plate ext you then don't have to buy those things so it does somewhat add value.

I'm 57 and had dozens of bikes over my life. Ive only had one new one and to be honest I was so worried about damaging it and losing value I didn't always enjoy riding it.
I enjoy working on bikes and love getting a great deal on a used bike that after a year or two will get my money back. (I never buy used from a dealer.)
That all gives me real satisfaction.
If you're not mechanically minded or don't enjoy negotiating when buying used I can see a new bike is probably best.

I've always bought used bikes and for many years I've had good luck buying and riding what makes me happy with very few large repairs. I am getting to the point of looking at a new bike though, and this video did give me some food for thought. A way to avoid the BS you were talking about when selling your used bike.............. be very clear in your add. No trades, no low ball offers, first person with cash gets the bike, etc. Then if people start calling or texting trying to work you over, you can be nice but firm and tell them how it is. By the way, you can hold the line more if you've truly taken care of your bike. If it's trashed, more "trash" will be contacting you, bottom line.

Loved this video Kyle! I've always been against buying a new bike as I just couldn't justify the depreciation, but your point about spending 30+ hours looking for the perfect bike is SO true. Driving around, calling, searching and all the letdowns was spot on and I had never factored that in. I was planning on buying a used 20/21 yz250f but after watching your video I could't agree more. Bite the bullet and drop the $8-10k on a new bike and then spend that extra time making money. I have no doubt I'll be happier with the bike and come out ahead.

  • @MWV85
    @MWV85 Před 3 lety +1

So true! Our family of 6 rides together. In the early days, it was all about getting any bikes we could get our hands on. We would inevitably spend AT LEAST the same amount on parts and repairs as we would on the used bike itself (and my husband is a mechanic, no labor costs). When our daughter was ready to move up, we opted for a brand new 2021 KX85. Smartest move we ever made. One thing to note however, new bikes are super hard to come across right now (at least here in the northeast)- unless you jump early on the buying season.

thanks for the video Kyle, totally agree.
I've always owned used bikes, but just bought my first new dirtbike after 8 years and over 12 bikes cause i knew what i wanted and will stick with it and didn't wanna carry over someone else's problems or shotty maintenance.
on the cheap bikes buy/sell cost: my last bike was a DRZ400 that i bought for $2,500 and sold it for $2,800 after 4 years and invested little money on it

But new and keep it for at least 5 years. They do not change fast enough anymore to warrant a new bike every year or every other year for me. If I can sell it for anything after 5 years that's a bonus.

  • @briankennedy5403

I had a 2010 Yamaha but wanted a KTM 350 XC-F... did not want to pay 12k OTD for a brand new one so I took my time looking for a lightly used one. I was very picky and finally found a 2019 KTM with only 2.4hrs on it for 8k. It took about 6 months. It was worth it for me but I enjoyed the search and also already had a bike to ride in the meantime. You that talk about the only reason guys buy new is because they can't afford it are ill-informed, sometimes guys just don't want to take the initial depreciation hit. However, nothing wrong with buying brand new if you got the scratch.

  • @JETZcorp
    @JETZcorp Před 4 lety +3

I ride vintage bikes exclusively(so far anyway) so they're always used by definition. But sometimes things just play out weird.
For example, my '82 Husky I got when I was 14, from the neighbor. The bike ran like crap and he thrashed it bad, but we bought it right after he did a top end job. You'd think that'd be a poor candidate. Well it's been 14 years now, and the bike runs strong and hard on that very same top end. The thing is just a 10,000rpm battle axe.
Then in 2018 I bought a '79 Maico. It was not actually made in the 70s but assembled new in 2015 by a reputable Maico shop, and included an extensive build sheet detailing how every part of the bike was new, rebuilt, or inspected. Bought it from an old man who lost the gumption to ride big-bores anymore. Within 3 months of easy riding, the big-end rod bearing went south and I had to pull out the Husky to finish the season.

      @JETZcorp Před 2 lety

@@maxmartin6183 Nice! My dad has a "ridden twice" 490 Maico, but it's in such museum shape he's never had the heart to ride it. It still has the original factory tires, and you can still see some of the little ridges on the tops of some of the knobs.

Different strokes I guess. I have plenty of disposable income but would never waste $10k on a dirt bike. Last year I bought a Dyna, xr400, xr50, xr650r, all for less then one of those multiple new bikes you have. They are all a blast to ride and work on. If the entire top end blew in all three dirt bikes it would still be cheaper than your one new bike.

You're absolutely spot on. This channel has become nothing but shilling premium products and new Euro bikes to the followers. I've unsubscribed but it keeps popping up in my suggested videos feed. I'm watching channels that are about promoting the sport as a whole not just the new latest fad bike and accessories. This guy should be doing used bike build-up projects and testing budget bikes like those GPX bikes there in Utah. Or particularly looking at something like the SWM which comes in thousands less than KTM or Beta.

I share the same bike buying philosophy as you and it’s served me well. If everyone thought the same as we do we wouldn’t have the same opportunity to roll over bike purchases without losing our shirts each time. Once in a while a good deal will fall into your lap and it’s worth buying, but I wait for them to appear rather than search for them constantly. Also, once you have a “good” bike, you can spend time searching for project bikes on the side that you can wrench on without being deprived of riding time. Some people value riding more than wrench, some split it equally, and some would rather build/wrench more than ride so keep that in mind.

I understand your points with buying new, if you can save every month for it. Some of us cannot and therefore have to buy used. You also highlighted the worst case scenarios for buying used 😂 Not saying that stuff doesn’t happen, but I have had great success buying used for the past 7 years. Different strokes for different folks. I don’t feel like I took up a part time job looking for used. Never had to drive more than 2 hrs away to get one, which nowadays you may have to drive that far to a dealership that has your new bikes haha. Nonetheless I appreciate your videos sir!

I usually buy 3 year old bikes, put a hundred hours on it and sell the next spring, it still cost money to ride. Sometimes I look at 10 used bikes, and pass on all of them, wasted time sucks too( I think I plan for time better than spending $$). I fell lucky if I can score some good swag on a used bike.
This year was strange with covid, used bike pool was smaller, and record 2nd hand prices. I missed a couple months of riding, lol, I should of bought a new bike, but then dealers were so short bikes.
I also wanted a crf125 for a new rider, usually $3300 new, used on KSL.com 125f's and 150f's are selling $4k and can be 15 years old, I can't wait for normality to come back, lol. No new to be found :(
Yes I drool when thinking about a new 2021 bike, but I'm gun shy, I haven't walked into a dealer yet.
You survived tubing!!!!!!!! I hope the high elevations cool for all our sake SOON. Riding near Strawberry last weekend, I was done by 11AM due to the heat,
I don't mind shopping for a bike, but I hate selling them, scammers and the low ballers are tiring.

Depends on your commitment to the sport. In my case i am back after 30 years and bought 2 bikes . I ride intermediate terrain at around 25-30 mph average. Not knowing if my son and i would enjoy enough to buy new i bought 2 450, one ktm xcw 2009 and a 2006 crf x. Price formboth where 3000$ canadian and i have put 800$ on both ( tires, tubliss, chain sproket, trail tech, fork seals) those bikes are running strong and where in good shape when i bought them. They are doing awsome formwhat we ride now. I had a chance to ride a friend 2019 xcw250 tpi. Those are 12000 camadian here new and that was the bike i was looking for before buying used. I was impress by the 250tpi it rides so smooth ( i am a 2 stroke lover) the power is easy to manage and it pulls almost as hard as a 450 on top. The 250 feel lighter when changing directions but gets kick out by rocks more than the 450. To resume, if you have th money buy the new tpi 250 they do everything well and are light. If you want to do medium rolling terrain have engine break going downhill and have a more planted bike get a 450. After 40 hours i don't regret my buying decision for what i do now ( woulf have buy a 250 rather than a 450 that are just to powerfull for nothing if those would have been available at a reasonnable price) but a 250 tpi will be my future bike if i decide to do more technical stuff. Great channel Kyke.

Typically I purchase New old stock, when dealers have bikes from the previous year you can get a steel if you know what you want. In February 2016 purchased a KTM xcw 300 for $5,200 new. February 2019 purchase a 2018 Honda CRF 250 for $5,400.
These are out the door prices.
And not for nothing but some people like to hunt. I'm out of Florida, we have driven as far as Missouri to get a package deal.

I bought a 2010 crf250r last july and it had been rode, but you could tell my the case wear, the chain and sprocket, and the original tires it was sitting on, that it was either rode by a beginner still learning, or it just wasnt rode much..but the air filter wasnt bad and the oil looked decent when I meet the guy. This bike has started EVERY TIME iv went to ride...never EVER been hard to start...ran buttery smooth, and the only issue iv had is the fuel filter getting clogged and that's just part of having a Fuel injected bike...changed that and it's been golden ever since...I forgot to say...I paid 2250 for it...if put starcross 5s, new levers, new plastic, new throttle cable, skid plate and cycra probends on it..iv put another thousand into it and iv beyond happy....maybe one day I'll find a nice beta 300 used....that's what I want..ever since iv watched Kyle's videos....I want a nice used beta 300rr...fingers crossed🤞🤞🤞

I'm in sales and can afford to go and write a check for any dirt bike I choose. Not finance but write a check. And you know what? There's no damn way I'll ever do that. I always buy used from good owners who either know or know through a circle of friends. I buy well-maintained used bikes. Honestly if Kyle is really looking out for the interest of dirt biking as a whole he would be doing project bikes on KDX200s and Yamahas to show people how to get into the sport without dropping 8 to 10K. You can get a excellent quality motorcycle for under $7,000. And it was even less than that before the damn Corona...

@@Dashriprock4 Yeah I hear ya. I was just curious what people do. For instance, I work in IT as a network admin and do well, but having children, a home, a few properties keep me from purchasing deprecating assets. I mean we have nice cars, and I own three motorcycles, but they are used like you stated. I have not had a dirt bike since the 90s, and my jaw dropped when I seen they cost as much as my 2018 Street Triple RS (bought it this year actually) for 8,500 bucks LOL.

@@Lex-Rex I am an empty nester so it certainly makes it easier for me to go and spring for a new bike. But the wife and I have other things that we want to do so a new bike would interfere with some of our long-term travel plans. I only have one though I would like to get another bike in the near future. It will be used and well maintained. I get what Kyle is doing here... He's running a business through this video format. But I think it's a missed opportunity to promote the overall health of the sport in exchange for his short-term well-being by being a mouthpiece for new bike manufacturers and high dollar accessories. I'm really not his target audience. I've ridden with guys who have newer bikes than me and didn't have trouble keeping up. I've had guys with older bikes blow by me. I just want to see people avail themselves to the tremendous amount of fun and challenge there is in this sport. Kyle has a hell of a platform to promote that but as I said it's a missed opportunity..
