A few weeks ago I released a video where I was just riding my 2020 KTM 300 XC-W for the first time. While plugging along, I mentioned that I have a “checklist” that I go through with each new bike that I get to make sure that they are ready to roll. I mentioned in that video that if people wanted the list, they could email me and I’d give it to them. I have had no less than a hundred emails asking for it in a short time. I get multiple requests for it each day. That being the case, it was time do put it into video form.
Keep in mind that you don’t HAVE to do all these things. Don’t break the bank buying stuff. Many of these things don’t cost money either. Hopefully it gives you some ideas and adds some value to your riding and your machine.
    Enjoy the video!

Great tips Kyle, thanks. I also grease the steering stem bearings and swingarm bearing as well as the linkage bearings as you mentioned. Re torque everything to the factory specs.I do that before I even ride the bike because it is much easier to do when the bike is clean.

Awesome list Kyle! Thanks for posting it. I will not hit the trails without setting the suspension. For me, that means a rebuild because I’m 6’2” 230. I don’t love the cost, but the results make it essential. So much safer with a properly set suspension as well.

I'd like to add a note to the bar pad section. My dad runs an odometer on his race bike from the times of timekeepers enduros, and to put that on there he had to take off the bar pad, and about 8 weeks ago he was racing a normal desert scramble high speed and hit a dip and smashed his jaw on the computer. Broke his jaw in multiple places and got surgery, the first few nights before surgery he couldn't move because all the pieces would move independently.
The EXC's come with that lame excuse for a bar pad and that's what I have so for the past month since I got home for college since my dad hasn't been able to ride I took the stock pad from his XC and put it on my EXC, because I ride it pretty hard. He also has an EXC but he doesnt ride it hard, it's mostly a computer/rides with the whole family bike, because my sister and mom dont ride nearly as hard and both have 230s. I have a 350 dualsport, my dad has a 350 XC race and a 500 dual sport.
If anybody has read this far, do you know where to find an american flag bar pad that isn't brand specific? Like a plain bar pad with an American flag but no logos of any kind. I found the ones with logos by protaper and renthal, the protaper one the logo covers way to much, the renthal one isnt too bad but I dont want to be the guy running a renthal bar pad with stock non renthal bars. Or if anyone knows where to get the stock ktm handlebar pad, because I really like the shape of them and they dont get in the way of the speedometer on the EXC bikes.

Rear brake lever position adjustment, bar control position adjustment, grease your main pivot pin (that swingarm works alot). Intall an hour meter straight away, oversized fuel tanks are popular, and .ost importantly, piece together a good small tool kit that you can either carry or attach to the bike 😊

Brakes and suspension are two major things I always look at when buying used bikes. Check under the engine and cases for any welds or cracks. Look at the sprockets for wear. Check the air filter and see if it's been properly cleaned and maintained (gives a good idea of how well the previous owner cared and maintained their bike). If its a two stroke, remove the exhaust chamber and flash a light inside the exhaust port to see any visual damage and the piston. Check compression. Look for sounds and squeaking noises with the suspension (suspension can be costly to replace parts). Check for side to side movement in the wheels/axles. Check coolant level.

Another great piece for the money are two small stainless eyelets that go to a fork bolt [one on each side] and give you a great tie down point no more over the seat ratchet strap or finagling around the handlebars. Paid 20$ at the bike shop best $ spent

Do you have an extra taillight assembly for a 17-19? I have a 19 EXC dualsport and only about 30 hours on it and I have already cracked the stock license plate holder and was looking into either the xcw taillight or something like the sicass or tusk racing assembly to tuck it up higher and also lose some weight so it isnt bouncing around and making it easier to get caught in the tyre. Have you had much experience with the street legal KTMS or have any suggestions for solving this issue?
