In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy's special powers.
What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre-defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
“Midnight Special” stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher and Oscar nominee Sam Shepard. Rounding out the main cast are Bill Camp, Scott Haze and Paul Sparks.
Jeff Nichols directs from his own screenplay.
Sarah Green and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, who previously collaborated with Nichols on his critically acclaimed thriller “Take Shelter” are producing the film, with Glen Basner, Hans Graffunder, and Christos V. Konstantakopoulos serving as executive producers.
Also reuniting with Nichols behind the scenes is director of photography Adam Stone, production designer Chad Keith and editor Julie Monroe. David Wingo is composing the score.

This movie is giving off some serious old-school Speilberg vibes and I love it
+David Dean Burkhart Yes! Really a throwback to when movies didn't have to be split into "kids" and "adults" camps. Part of what made Spielberg's movies so great was that they didn't treat kids like retards and had faith in their ability to think. I get the same kind of feeling here.

This movie was awful. It had no plot and no explanation for anything. It was as if some loser with rich parents had a bad acid trip or dream about the cornfield scene and thought "omg MOM DAD, PLEASE FUND THIS SHIT MOVIE IDEA!" And of course, the sad parents enabled their sad child. This movie is Stranger Things mixed with Tomorrowland minus any sort of actual storyline. The entire movie is about some weird ass sun child in a car with former Mormons, running from the FBI. There is no actual conflict or resolution. Only meaningless silent stares between actors that are probably supposed to seem deep and meaningful. The best actor they could get was Pitbull Babyface aka Joel Edgerton, and he's only in it because Jeff Nichols probably held hid family hostage. They probably thought they were doing great by getting Kirsten Dunce- oops I mean Dunst- to be in it. The only other explanation I can come up with for this movie's existence is that it's based of a short story or comic or something. Well I hope the creators of the hypothetical original piece aren't completely mortified by this atrocity of a "film". And I wonder when we will be hearing about the copyright lawsuit from the creators of Tomorrowland.

It's actually called Midnight Special because of the movies the director, Jeff Nichols, went to as a kid. Things like Close Encounters, E.T., Fire In The Sky. Those types of sci-fi movies are what inspired him, and they always played at 12:00am. They were called, of course, midnight specials.

Bree Elise I agree with everything you said, I just saw it in one of my film classes and this movie is very fucking annoying. Nothing is explained or explored in depth, things just happen and theres an outstanding abscence of dialogue, with awkward long silences the whole damn movie and a bunch of questions that are never answered. If I could describe this movie with one word it would definitely be unsatisfying.

I really enjoyed this movie and its the type of sci-fi i wish studios made more often. You dont need massive budgets and CGI explosions to make a masterful Sci-fi thriller if you have an interesting and original story with heart (and some amazing actors as well of course).
Still looking forawrd to seeing this. Haven't had a chance to go see it in theater yet but I will soon for sure. Ever since I saw Take Shelter I was hoping this guy would write and direct a sci-fi movie. Jeff Nichols never disappoints when it comes to film making and writing a great script. THIS DUDE IS KILLING IT!!

Just watched it and its one of my favorites of 2016 so far. Loved it acting was great along with the story directing writing ect. Its a very cool premise and I liked the way it was executed. I'd strongly recommend it if you're a fan of sci fi especially the Spielberg type like close encounters or JJ Abrams's super 8.

It's funny that Michael Shannon is in it. The kid is reading Superman man comics at some point in the back seat of a car, and he asks Shannon's character "what is kryptonite?" I think that was a deliberate reference.
There's also a moment when Adam Driver's character says "red saber". I forget the context in which he said it, but I think it was a code word or something. Pretty neat.

I reckon Jaeden Lieberher's acting career will be one to watch as he grows older (assuming he stays in films & "stays on the rails") I thought he played quite a good part as the bullied kid in "St Vincent" with Bill Murray & Melissa McCarthy.

They need to have a part two. Hopefully, the boy comes back to save the world with epic fighting and showing more gifts/powers. Also, another movie showing the boy entering that new world and unlocking powers beyond the expectations of his race "the world on top of ours", which made him the most powerful being of his species.
That would ruin the grounded feeling of the film universe.

I have to say this film looks quite intriguing. I am a big fan of Nichols' films, and this looks equally as good as Mud or Take Shelter. If you haven't seen either of these films. I highly recommend that you check them out.
