So Scamander was the author of the book which Harry and his friends were learning from. The fictional textbook was actually published in 2001 (written by Rowling).

It IS mildly upsetting that it's set in America, because Britishness is just such a huge part of the atmosphere everyone's gotten used to and gotten comfortable with. I'm sure I'll enjoy it though.

That's interesting. I know the literary element always had a heavy british feel to it which kinda bled into the films. I think perhaps part of the discomfort people are also having with this movie is the fact that they don't really have a source novel to go by which makes it feel inauthentic.

Yes, I know the fictional author and book exists in the HP universe (I even have a copy of the book itself), but unlike with the Harry Potter series, there isn't that novelistic anchor that the readers have been used to when getting the cinematic experience, so it feels a little weird and disjointed as a result. I'm sure J.K. Rowling has plenty of influence over the writing of this film, but it will be the first time one is made without an already existing novel written by the author from which it is framed. The move isn't exactly based on the tiny, 100 page book she wrote that one time.

Anyone who's asking: The story takes place 70 years before Harry Potter. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a standard textbook in the Harry Potter book and movie series. This movie is a prequel to the Harry Potter, which follows the author of the book (Newt Scamander) and his adventures of writing the book. So Scamander was the author of the book which Harry and his friends were learning from. The fictional textbook was actually published in 2001 (written by Rowling).
